this is the periodic reposting of the usenet HOF Poll for the usenet
newsgroup, rec.sports.basketball.pro. all readers of the newsgroup are
encouraged to cast their ballots via e-mail back to me,
recent results of this poll are now available at Eric Bin's website:

there are some ground rules to keep things under control. you must be
able to quote the ballot posted, either directly through your newsreader,
or by using your favorite editor to cut & paste it into a reply to me.
DO NOT POST YOUR BALLOT TO THIS NEWSGROUP. it will be thrown away.
and laughed at.
all other balloting formats will be thrown away. use the latest posting
of this form to cast your ballot. previous postings contained errors
that are gradually being stamped out as new ones creep in.
the purpose of this poll is to monitor the net consensus. for it is the
net consensus that is the only thing that will count, especially in all
differences of opinion with the netgods on this group. do not use the
lame excuse that this player is already in the NBA Springfield HOF. do
not think that this is a trivial matter. Lucent Technologies has
invested a huge proportion of trees & disk space to this issue. and
they are good. do not use any awards granted by others as weight in
any of your considerations.
the netHOF Poll divides all reasonable NBA & ABA players into 5 basic
categories. these are:
the SuperEchelon any ballot with more than 18 SE names are
(S) invalidated. this is the select few, the
cream of the HOF! try to pick 10-12.
Solid HOF (H) this player is definitely HOF material
Marginal HOF (M) this player is just barely HOF or will be
Not HOF (x) this player is not ever going to be HOF
leave underscore this player has not been playing long enough yet
OR do not recognize the name of this player
college careers are not considered (Walton & Maravich still make decent
voting considerations, but Goose Givens? c'mon.)
please give extra consideration to defensive prowess, as it is negligent
to be swayed by offensive categories only. the overrated PPG is not a
good yardstick. neither is shooting percentage, especially when looking
at players of the early years.
to encode your ballot, you must vote accordingly by entering one of the
key letters below in front of the player's name, IN COLUMN 1 (Fortran).
this would be column 0 for you C programmers like me.
it would be most helpful for me if you OVERSTRIKE the underscore ( _ )
in column one with the letter of your choice.

x definitely NOT HOF
blank do not know yet
where "blank" means to leave the underscore as is.
there are new players gradually being added to the list. take your
time. this poll will run forever. if you feel someone is missing,
please add a new line in the same format in the appropriate category.
note that i have thrown in a lot of players who are not HOF.
and i have also left out players. good luck.
