FEEL A DRAFT? The annual Rule V draft was held Monday at baseball's winter
meetings in Nashville. The draft allows clubs to claim players left off
other organization's 40-man rosters. Major-league clubs are required to
keep chosen players on their major-league rosters all season or risk
losing them to their original teams.

Following the major-league draft, Triple-A clubs can then choose players
from the Double-A level left off other organization's 40-man rosters,
and, finally, Double-A clubs can pluck unprotected players with more than
four years of service time from other organization's Class A rosters. The
draft moves in rounds, with teams passing if they choose not to take a
player. The drafting stops when all teams are at 40 players on their
roster or have decided to pass.

Something I've always wondered: what exactly *is* Rule V? For that matter,
what are Rules I through IV?

Some day, I'll write an FAQ for my site, that hopefully will explain some
of this. I don't know off the top of my head, but a complete and utter
guess would be that it has something to do with the Agreement between the
Major Leagues and the National Assoc. Just a guess.
