UCLA defeated Georgia Tech 12-3. These two teams both look like potential World
Series teams. UCLA played an outstanding game with Freshman of the Year
candidate Adam Berry hitting two home runs, giving him three in two games, and
Preseason All-American Chase Utley adding one.. The Bruins' defense was
outstanding with preseason All-American first baseman Garrett Atkins making a
spectacular play, shortstop Jack Santora making several spectacular plays and
third baseman Randall Shelly getting in on the act/ The pitching was just as
good with another Freshman of the Year candiate, Josh Karp, showing off his
filthy changeup. 1998 Freshman-All-American Bobby Roe was virtually unhittable
and earned the save.
