Does anyone know anything about the drawing of the traditional Japanese bow?

I mean the one that is about 7 feet tall and looks all off
kilter?
There's a gentleman in the city in which I live who has one
for sale for what looks like a pretty reasonable price, provided it's
as well made as he says it is.
I know it takes a while to learn how to shoot those properly.
Does anyone know anything about them?

I had a go at it once about 40 years ago. It is a spiritual and ritual
experience. The aim is to feel the being the arrow and shooting it in a
very conscious way. I went to a sports centre near Heathrow airport. You
will need a thumb ring to hold the string. The bows are very powerful and I
remember the arrow just left the bow without my doing anything that was a
conscious release. We were only a few yards in front of a target but it was
still great to hit it. I Googled for Kyodo and found several links. Try
it. Oh, I forgot to mention that the arrows are very large and long, too.
Once you have shot just that one arrow, you never forget the experience.
Good luck.

Thanks much. I'll save this, needless to say. It probably will
come in handy, or thumby.

Look for a book called "Zen in the art of Archery"
When I read it some years ago as part of my County Coach studies into
psychology
I was able to borrow it from the local library, although they had to order
it from the central library.
Quicks stocked it at one time, I don't know if they still have it.

There was a program on Sky last Sunday (which I missed) about the Samurai
Bow. You can still watch it here:-

http://tv.sky.com/video-samurai-bow

There's another one next week on the National Geographic channel. It is
repeated over several days at different times and it's called "Samurai
Archery". One time is Sunday at 11.30 am. I shall be recording it for
future reference.

There is also a program called "Archery: Tales of the bow". It is also
repeated over several days next week. I am recording it on Monday at 9.00
am and on Tuesday at 1.00 pm (Just in case the Sky box is switched off!).
That one is on the Discovery Knowledge channel.

Got interested myself and read some articles. Just like the English
longbow, there have been changes in bows in Japan over the years and it
would be difficult to judge an individual bow.

There is another cable TV show. I cannot remember name but the pit
classic warriors against each other, evaluate their weapons and show a
staged battle as to who would win. I know they had a Japanese samari,
Roman soldier and American Indian on one or two shows. I seem to recall
they showed the Japanese and Indian bows.

I read about that... I'm going to see if I can watch it on the
net.
