When did this all change to become the soap opera that rec.skydiving

Like over at DZ.COM. The last time I looked, which was months ago, Aggie
Dave had about 1000 posts and 90 jumps. He was explaining, incorrectly, all
about hook turns. He apparently had a D license in posting and an A license
in jumping (2 of his postings must have been done at night).

So youre ragging us and DZ.com ?
How many jumps you got Mick ?
How many you made this year ?

All around nice guy.
Man small... why fall ? Skies call... thats all.
To answer your question, I've got 4300 jumps total and about 400 this year. I
post about 20 times a year.

Note I said 90% of the conversation, not 90% of the people near the fire. I
freely admit that have been some of the problem the past couple of weeks. I
finally opened a kill file to thin out the junk, and to reduce my temptation
to be part of the problem. In the past 5 days, it has cut 172 messages.

The mis-spelling of NippLboy is usually made by people who weren't there and
have only heard about the genius. Anyone who was there would remember the
distinction and why.
You're right about the time-frame, though. When Windows 95 came out in
August of that year, it was the first time in history MICROS~1 had made any
effort into any kind of networking, since the whole company product line was
never designed to communicate with other machines. That legacy still shows
every day.
People though were just enraptured that now they could get AOL as an ISP and
*even* do email! Golly gee, so the McDonald's of the computing world made
inexpensive TCP/IP available to the masses. Didja read read recently about
fat kid's lawyers suing the world's largest distributor of fatty foods for
making them the way they are? Same thing here. The fattest kids are whining
about good it used to be.
It wasn't just wreck daught that experienced exponential signal-to-noise
ratio declines with the incredibly increased increased amount of USENET
usage that happened as a result. We started seeing spam email in ungodly
proportions, network intrusions up the ass, and virii on a weekly basis.
We also saw, amongst all that increasing noise, even more evidence of
"intelligent life out there", sometimes even not life as we knew it. More
people were able to communicate there ideas in more free, uncensored forums
and USENET newsgroups than ever before, and the amount of diamonds just
laying around for the picking up also had exponential increase, only this
with positive exponents far greater than 1 and increasing continuously.
With all those increasing jewels of knowledge came an exponential increase
in the amount of sand and bird dung in which they are buried though, and
through which one has to sift.
That's why I like to order the deep-fried chicken gizzards with dry mustard
whipped up with a little tap beer, and a bunch more tap beer to wash 'em
down with. (Look at me end my sentence in a preposition!) I know those
chickens peck at all the shiny stuff, and I hope to one day find a diamond
or other carbon-based stone in them gizzards I'm eating.
Might have to buy a new tooth crown, but what the hell.

One of the awful parts of getting old is that you see patterns forming,
even amongst random data.
If there has been one constant in my life, it has been to watch
good things form, and be overwhelmed by folks that have no understanding
what makes them good, no interest in learning, and will take more than
they give until there isn't anything left to take. Then they'll bitch
that they didn't get their share.
An awful part of my life has been the awareness that at times I
may have been one of the takers. These days, when I find something
I think I can "make better", I tend to leave. Probably it means
I don't understand what is already there, and if I don't want to take
the time to learn, better I leave things as I found them.
It's like a pot luck. I've been part of groups that had potlucks.
Often they are started by folks who like to cook. They are really good,
good food and usually lots of it. Good food will attract people, even
people who don't like to cook. Then there will be more folks than food.
Some folks who come will bring stuff they bought at the deli counter,
which isn't bad but is sorta besides the point. Pretty soon the cooks
drop out for a variety of reasons, and the only folks left are the ones
that drop by the deli counter. That doesn't attract alot of new folks,
'cause they can just go by the deli counter themselves and take it
home. Ultimately, one day more folks show up than food and someone
ends up ordering a pizza or two. Pretty soon no one is coming.
I don't always like the direction that things have gone. But I do
have to ask myself if I've been actually bringing something to the
potluck lately or if I've just been dropping by the deli counter, or
worse yet, ordering the pizza. I used to write little stories, but
it's been awhile. I, and a half dozen others were the AAD attack squad
for a long time. But I haven't harrassed Buzz in a long time. I'm
more likely to be in some OT political discussion as of late, sorta
like ordering pizza when ya think about it.
Probably the best way to change things is to contribute. Overwhelm
the sheep herders with content. Somebody writes a "rant and rave"
column on their web page. Nothing prevents any of you riggers from
doing a weekly/monthly/daily posting about your current pet peeve.
How 'bout the rigging horror story of the week? All you AFF/JM's
can tell more than one NSTIWSH yarn I'm sure. Surely all you lawn
darts could scare up at least one decent jump from the weekend to share.
Parachutist comes out once a month and usually has at least one really
moronic letter in it. We could easily have a "moronic nomination" every
month just for giggles.
Kevin O'Connell
My vote for the "moronic nomination" letter in the Dec. Parachutist magazine is
The Third Degree. This guy expects for others to research and make sure that
he gets the rig that is right for his experience level and needs. (The guy
sounds like he would blame others if he "forgot" to pull, too!) He needs to
put some effort into researching and making his own educated decisions using
his own good judgment. Manufactures have information that describe and even
lay out in charts the weight and experience level that their canopies are best
suited for. He shouldn't be jumping if he isn't mentally capable of taking
responsibilities for himself.
Loved the freeflying photos in this edition and the feature on Stefania

Curious as to weather I have met Mike Zban who is shown in one of the photos.

Ya gotta really enjoy these people who say they never "read this group"

The new in vogue statement.."I never read the rec." has replaced :"I

Uhhm... Lana,
His letter was about his concern that untrained people may easily
obtain skydiving gear.
It may be fun if we also nominate a monthly "Most Excellent Moronic
Post" !
Well Duh Joe, of course we read it for more than the editorials. The
cartoons and jokes were first rate! For pictures we bought Penthouse. :)

I don't subscribe to Playboy.
To much "fluff".
Kinda like Parachutist compared to skydiving.
I subscribe to "Jugs".
It may be fun as well to nominate the "Most Moronic National Director" if, by
some ungodly misfortune, you are actually elected! :P Oh, people are actually
going to nominate you just for the entertainment value of watching a "Most
Moronic National Director" make a decent organization run amuck. With you as a
National Director it will certainly be bedlam.
I hope that you get your butt kicked and your teeth knocked out on fight night!

I know AggieDave to be a relatively decent guy. I currently dont know
what his current rankings are (jump #s or license status). But I do
know that not everything you read here on Wreck Dot or on dropzone.com
is totally accurate for all circumstances and persons. If a low # guy
is explaining anything about anything consider the source and move on.
He will learn. He has more than 90 jumps tho. And he reguarly
receives coaching.
However, I feel your pain on inaccurate or inflated info, in general.
Its a real burr under my saddle. I feel for me it must be an exercise
in Anger Management, Self Control, and patience. (patience for me
means they know the proceedure 'give em enough rope...' learn by
mistakes, if you dont want to listen)
I currently have issues with a dz person who walks on water. If I did
what this one does, I would be seriously 'talked to' in a
unmistakeable stern manner. Certianly nobody would jump with me.
Reason, I am guessing: I know better than to do that crap and I am
cute, BUT- This one is just overwhelmingly cute, therefore this one's
indangering all and self is all just seen as very, very funny. (over
and over on video) Look how cute I am corking into ___. Look how cute
I am when I ran into ___'s rig and flipped him into ___. Et. Ad
Nauseum
My problem for sure. I guess I just serious about my skydiving.
Kevin I don't think it's possible, or at least likely.
Most of the people who used to say stuff and listen and
learn have left.
The last really clean effort to figure something out that
I can remember was the airspeed / ground speed / exit order
discussions that ended around 1995.
The automatic opener discussions were good, I still have
a lot of yours and other's posts, but they were also filled
with a lot of rant and anger and agenda.
It's gone down hill since then.
I sometimes see someone try to say something now, but it's
immediately followed by 35 posts full of giggle snort fart
sheep anger at roger anger at uspa ..
About a year ago I gave up and tried kill files. Those worked
with the trn that I started reading news with in the 80's,
but I was using Netscape and it would crash when I tried to
create a kill file, so I gave up.
I still come by here a couple times a week because it's hard
to let go of something that once had real meaning, but it's
mostly to mark threads read, and there's no longer any
enthusiasm or anticipation.
I've been hanging out over at dropzone.com the last few weeks.
It reminds me somewhat of how rec.skydiving used to be,
although the volume is huge, too much to keep up with, and the
people seem to have gotten really young :-) :-)
I guess I'll keep stopping by here until I just let go and
fade away.
Thanks for all you posts and insights and stories.
Skr
I think the general consensus was that he would be one of the
least moronic directors, truly representing the interrests of
skydivers, but his style scares a lot of people.
