Just a two tandem hot shot, looks like to me ;)P
It is truly a shame that you missed out on the years of recitation of his
contributions to WWII, the four others and himself who ended the Korean War,
and of how he and is little indig team won Vietnam. Maybe you can Google for
them. I would hate to think of a skydiver lacking that basic knowledge. :)

In Italy
Tom, I told a story about them also, in case you forgot....the indigs
were a lot smarter and could hump a load without stopping to puke every
few steps....Yup peasants with no formal education make a hell of a
sailor or soldier up side a 1960's model Army Specialist.....
Ahhhhhh damn and I was gonna tell him to ask his TM/JM for a jumpsuite
with booties cause he's got the attitude down already and deserves a
pair DRATS
Bahhhhhhhaaaaaa!!!! Short, succint, and to the point - couldn't have
said it better myself!

>I was just looking for some feedback from others who jump there.
No prob. I do team stuff there - I learned to jump elsewhere before
they ever opened. There's probably (guessing) around 50-100 regular
skydivers who jump there from around Houston.
>The
>operators, the instructors, and riggers.
They're all profesional and know their stuff - it's a good outfit.
I've known the operators since before they opened Spaceland when
they've ran or jumped at other dz's. They're very conscious that it's
a business and they keep things above board - airplanes in spec,
adherance to FAA regs, ect. One of the instructors is on my team and
she's cool. The other instructors I've seen or know, at least in
passing aren't idiots and are experienced at what they do. I know a
couple riggers out there and they seem to know they're stuff too - I
get my rigging done elsewhere but that's because they're the people
I've always gone to but I wouldn't have a problem with any of the
riggers at Spaceland doing a repack or repairwork.
>I'm trusting them with my life. I
>would like to know how other people feel about the DZ.
The dz's been open since 2000 or 2001. They have good aircraft. They
don't cut corners. Comparing it with the other dropzone in Waller,
it's about the same when it comes to the basics - Waller (Skydive
Houston) is more of a "family" atmosphere but there's still that at
Spaceland - the difference is at the end of the day, most people leave
Spaceland and go home. At Waller people are more likely to hang out,
drink beer, and tell stories around he bonfire. Either dz is
excellent - especially when it comes to training and preparing
students. The most informative thing you can do is to go to Spaceland
(or Skydive Houston) and hang out, talk to people actually there, and
get their thoughts and listen to your instructors!
Best of luck!

Ya know, once upon a time it was wondered whether any new jumpers were
reading this crap and making conclusions one way or the other - guess
they have. Just think, Jin - if only you had been at a dz laying in
wait to sink your smelly gums into a prospective new jumper's neck -
one who wasn't already aware of the sticky muck you tend to wallow
around in - you might have actually drawn a recruit over to the "Brown
Side" of the Force. Ah, well - better luck next time.
You think maybe it's "Paulsitflies" in disguise?

With an attitude like yours, they won't care much what you think,

Know it all newbies raise a lot of red flags...
Ummm - Mike? He posted because he was looking for some info about
things he didn't know.
Not trying to give you a hard time or anything, dude - just seems to
me he was more or less responding to the dingleberry pretty much in
kind with the same attitude the dingleberry was throwing at him. No
big deal - I suspect he understands the difference between an
instructor who's teaching him skdyiving stuff and some faceless voice
on the usenet who calls him "just a two tandem hotshot," out of the
blue.
Just my two cents -

Irregardless, I think he's ready for booties already 0~;)
While it is a little intimidating at first, I'd encourage you to wander
around and engage as many of the experienced jumpers that you can while
out at the DZ. Watch how they put together a RW or head down dirt dive,
work through the dive flow, talk about the exit, etc. Ask a couple if
they mind explaining packing. Be a sponge. You won't remember all of
it, but it will sink in. Folks are usually more than
Good luck with your training. Biggest things (though probably one of the
most difficult at first): Relax and enjoy yourself AND ask lots of
questions and listen to your jumpmasters. Traffic on this newsgroup
notwithstanding, skydivers are a great bunch of folks.

Bad advice Jerry, its best they stay with the DZ & program they started
with
and not travel around much till they have at least 100/150 jumps under
their belt I know Waller is/was a good DZ. He could have started there
just as well and been OK. But now he's on his 3rd Tandem jump as a
student at Spaceland...Most staff & regular customers around there
probably know he's a student and will keep an eye on him, so theres
less chance of the 51 jump wonders sucking him into something he
shouldn't be involved in or filling his head full of useless
shit....Besides all that his JM won't have to deprogram any bad
information he picked up talking to total strangers somewhere else
every time he shows up for his next student jump. Students are pretty
well overloaded and have tunnel vision as it is...Let his JM & other
staff members tell him what he needs to know, the stupid stuff he can
learn later after he's been signed off student status.
It is sad he won't be around Wallers famous campfires to hear horror
storys about that terrible old skydiver Snuffy though 0~;)P as always,
your MANLY MAN
Think of thst movie "The Wiz" kid, the charter behind the curtain fits

your step on wreck skydiving, or I'll be on you like white on rice. ;)P
I do believe some one's discovered a new way to tell me I'm full of
shit, how about that? Waaaaaaaaa hahahahahahaha dayum
I think you will find most dropzones are like that - comes down to
people knowing each other.
>I was trying to stay out of the way

I thought it was pretty astute - there is a fair amount of bullshit
name calling in here, dingleberry. (insert emoticon or other device

I didn't say he should change his program - only suggested that if he
was looking for information and a real feel on how a place operates
and what people think about a dz, it's best to go out to a dz and hang
out.
>I know Waller is/was a good DZ. He could have started there

And it's not like he was looking for specific jump information but
only the nature of the dz including some dz specifics he was going to
be learning at. As for Waller, it was mentioned by way of comparison
to provide perspective.
>Students are pretty
>well overloaded and have tunnel vision as it is...Let his JM & other
>staff members tell him what he needs to know,
And again, no one was telling him to do this or that during a jump
which is the instructor's responsibility, of course. But then - how
good was your advice to a student who might be "pretty
well overloaded and have tunnel vision as it is" regarding his need
for booties?
>the stupid stuff he can
>learn later after he's been signed off student status.
Stupid stuff like knowing how good or bad the instructors and riggers
are and how the whole operation might be before he presses on with his
training program? Naw, I ain't buying it, Jinnie. Curiosity about
such things shows a heads up attitude imo.

Actually, those instances are pretty rare - usually after someone has
spotted a load off, inflicted themselves on others in some spectacular
fashion, or otherwise acted like a dingleberry but as a regular item
of discourse? Pretty rare.

I understand how the VA works & know Chucks problem, he's a sick
man....ain't gonna give him a break though cuz he's probably been a
bullying asshole all his life or at least since the playgrounds of
grammer school...and got away with it till he couldn't anymore in the
real world and brought it to skydiving with him. The man found the
wonderfull world of dz politics.....& People being afraid of getting
run off, he's afraid himself. Myself? it don't work against me cuz I
don't give a shit what you assholes think. He was just unlucky enough
to run into another one on here....one that understands the systems he
claims to be or have been in.
Nottttt that was enemy propaganda, I saw myself as a armed peace corps
type-----------they didn't. Any armed combatant dies, them or us. Well
thats just the fortunes of war...didn't hate them like the Marines did
chuck, Matter of fact I respected the hell out of them and still
do....I was thrilled to read they had kicked the PLA's ass over pot pol
after the U.S. left... the little M'fers just rolled into Cambodia and
cleaned it out, The Chicom invaded in protest...it only took the NVA
two or three weeks to put their ass back across the border. OUT FUCKING
STANDING...It wudda took the USMC at least twenty or thirty years and
the U. S. Navy at least four weeks But then again it was their country
and the civilian population was behind them, ours never were.. otoh I
believe we cudda whipped the NVA if they had invaded Texas heh heh 0~;)P
I said I brought very few of the little hard core bastards back alive
and never drowned civilians.
Your hitting on the drowing claim made by the NLF/PLF might just be
coincidence. They had two Provisional Battalions they were trying to
slip past into II Corps...our river was the last obstacle...a month
before elements of the 5th or 7th had pushed some stragglers towards
the river from the North...trying to push them back from thw Monkey
mountain side of DaNang and the Highway one approachs coming up from
the south. We blocked for them...a mixture of NVA & VC were caught up
in the net about 3 K below Hoi An at a place we called little
bear....Wasn't much, just small fractured units and stragglers...The
Marines held at a treeline..between the treeline and river were old old
dry rice pattys overgrown with tall elephant grass. The enemy hit our
Anvil got chopped up and fell back into the dry rice pattys, the
Marines left them too much room to maneuver Fricking Marines had dug in
at the edge of the tree line and wouldn't come out into the open and
finish the push to the river (Afraid of our M2 fire I reckon...Anyway I
only had 3 junks with me and one Regular Navy SWIFT was sent in support
guarding our rear from anything on the south bank and to pull the
CoVans out if our Junks were hulled or the enemy ran right over our
blocking position...we couldn't get off the boats and dig them outta
that elephant grass ourselves...nothing but crews 14 men and 2
advisors. We had left the RF/PF's we used a Ready reaction platoons
back at the outpost to guard the Ville, the Marines refused to push on
through for whatever reason, so our Operations Officer who heard us
yowling over the Radios called out Army Aviation....The Black Cats came
and blew the elephant grass around trying to find the ones remaining
alive & carring B-40's...We knew some were because a few RPG's were
being fired our way....This shit went on all damn day. We finally
whittled them down to just a few...A black cat caught one crawling
through the grass laterally away from both us and the Marines...Radio
traffic was flying back and forth...We were pissed at the enemy and the
Marines both. KILL HIM WITH YOUR DOOR GUNS DAMMIT...they wouldn't do
it... And later claimed we didn't appear to take prisoners. A lie, all
the enemy had to do was not shoot at us...once the fight started their
was little chance of anyone against us surviving unless they won the
gunfight...I think thats why the Marines dug in and refused to push on
thru to the river. Once our little people (VNN) got their blood up
anybody moving out there was gonna get their dick knocked in the
sand...They wudda jumped off the boats and took heads or other
souvineers if we hadn't pistol whipped them to stop it. Asians aren't
the calm inscrutable types writers & HollyWood makes them out to
be....their hot blooded & emotional as any Spaniard. Anyway who you
think got blamed?
"the out of control sumbitch is egging them on" MY ASS I WAS
~thats one~
Then within the same month we blocked for the ARVN's up at the fork
above Hoi An, they were chasing a weapons platoon escaping from a
battalion sized fight the 525th provisional VC
had thrown against them . Well the ARVN pushed right down to the sand
bar and that enemy Platoon was no longer a active one when it was over
because no one was left Unfortunately a good many of the enemy fell in
the water or were killed fording between the bank and the small island
that created the fork in the river and floated down towards Hoi An
where fishermen found them in the confluence eddys where two rivers met
and reported them as drowned bodys
~thats two~
we began to pull back to the river...The LT
Finally the Snakes got there and started choping kindling out of
everything in sight. The LT decided we needed to break for the river in
full retreat...Boats were being fired on by now so he knew at least a
few RPG teams were between us and the river, then he asked the FAC to
have the Snakes sweep down the bank from east to west from the water
line to where the pines barrens ended. They did then went back to
pounding the main force dogging us, we stuck our heads up and looked
around....LT gave a hand signal and we were up and running straight for
the river kinda spread out in a skirmish line 3 advisors and 15
locals...there was some dazed enemy beginning to stand up and hold
their Rocket launchers above their head unfortunately one of their ammo
bearers (apparently unscratched) decided to john wayne it and fired our
way The natives with us ran right over the top of them killing
everybody left alive...hop skip and a jump were in the water. All three
of us covans had thrown smoke as soon as we saw the water and the boat
came in for us Man that was a Nationalist war, the hate between North
and South mussta been on par with our own civil war...If the Ha'shes
could have left the enemy
just a grease spot on the ground they would have....mean little
bastars...Anybody that said the South Vietmanese wouldn't fight shudda
been there that day...They would have stopped to take heads but their
CoVans were hooking it to the river and they didn't want to be left! ;)
~thats 3~
All this activity and enemy bodies in the water mussta gave somebody a
idea on the other side...The PLF/NLF propganda arm claimed we were
drowning innocent civilians and wounded prisoners in the river...The
Army had just descoverd an atrocity caused by their own troops...hell
the news media was raising hell about that one. MACV & IIIMAF agreed
they needed to get on top of shit so orders came down to cease
operations We were to be investigated
We stood down two weeks...no telling how much stuff the enemy pushed
across our river...I know those two Provisional NVA units escaped south
into II Corps...tell you what I was glad they were gone and we cud go
back to interdicting the local VC.
Bottom line the whole Group and our team in particular was
investigated, not just me...got a clean bill of health Chuck...
It kinda hurt my feelings though...put us ass deep in Alligators then
question us like criminals for killing them to keep from being eat
up...Onlyst way I'd fight any enemy of my country again would be
because they came down that dirt road out there and onto my property
then shit on the doorstep ;(p
A war story I' thouht but their interchangeable, you artta hear my
fishing storys from Vietnam...I ain't told one yet cuz I'm afraid Jimbo
might be lurking and report me to CNO and the Hauge for eating the
flesh of murdered fish and then on top of that the GAO will send me a
35 year old bill for wasting concussion grenades...I'm quite sure the
CNO cain't send me up for a Captains mast for fucking off on the
river...they cain't recall me because of not being a commissioned
officer ;)p
btw they really did stand my Advisory Unit down for two weeks
for a investigation over drownings of civilians which reminds me of
some of the VNN's punishment codes for bad sailors. Swear to god, they
put them in cages and lowered them into the water till they had to put
the top of their heads against the top bars to keep their noses above
the water. First time I saw it, it shook the hell out of me...We wer at
Co Lo and the lower river is tidal
Iwalked down to the edge of the river right at twilite to check a boat
and kept hearing Vietmanese voices coming off the river. Looked out out
over the water and their was no sampam out there....so I'm looking all
around going WTF? When someone
calls out Moi' my, moi'my, here here. I looked down and theres 4 heads
trying to keep their noses above the water with faces pressed upwards
against the bars of a small cage about the size of a steamer trunk and
shit the tide was coming in...being brand spaking new I had no idea
what it was about and the cage was too heavy for me to lift alone...one
of them was already gurgling & spitting water...I turned around and
hauled ass to the team house
LT LT
what now? see that cobra in the bunker again?
No Sir, theirs 4 little people in a cage hanging out over the river
bank, drowning.
"Ignore it"
THERE DROWNING!
Stay out of it, its not our business.

No, just stay out of it, this is a disipline matter.
"UH"
Stay out of it
"UH"
"Get used to it Petty Officer Smith you have 13 months of this and you
will see a lot worse before its over"
"What did they do?"
"I never ask, its my counterparts buisness not mine"
"BUT THATS A DEATH SENTENCE"
"He's probably just sweating them and will pull them out before the
tide crests"
"What if he don't?"
The LT looked at me and run his finger across his throat
"Here, here's a bottle of team scotch fix a drink and set down.
"But"
"SET DOWN pause Thats a order
Aye Aye sir.
"Here have a drink and we will swap sea storys"
I don't like scotch sir
You don't drink?
Yes Sir, just not Scotch.
Go get a beer out of the cooler then, relax.
Yes sir
Bring that cribbage board back over here with you.
So we sat there, drank and played cards while 4 Vietmanese sailor
drowned for breaking some VNN regulation, While we played the LT
explained these sailors weren't like us, they
weren't volunteers...mOSTLY just peasant fisherman taken off Sampams
and impressed into the VNN, sent to a unit far from their village...no
bootcamp just slapped on a war junk and
given OJT on being fighting sailors, that I could probably trust my
petty officers because they had been in a while and most of the senior
ones had been trained by the FFL Mobile Marine, the boots might cut and
run on me though...That this particular 4 were probably deserters who
had been caught.
"Hell of a way to fight a war sir.
"Thats why we get the extra pay and you will also find are protected
from on high
"Why?"
"We have the radio but I meant protected by MACV and CINCPACFLT
Oh, you mean air support?
No. I mean we have Godfathers, didn't you get your "get out of jail
free card?"
That yellow I.D. Card?
Thats the one
WOW
The promotions are good to, were put on top of the promotion list.
Really?
Sure I was a Ensign last week HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
(damn a full LT with a sense of humor)
"Ever drink with a Officer before?
Yes sir
really?
A admrial gave me a drink once
No shit?
I was his coxun
On duty?
No Sir at his dependent Quarters.
Took him home?
I was the duty driver, his old lady invited me in to eat, after dinner
he gave me a brandy and soda...shit my young butt was puckered I
thought it was some kind of test, their just regular people though I
was on his staff for a while...shit I watched their grandchildren
He was one of them old WW2 buzzards, said he had enough yes men around
blowing smoke up his ass...my country boy honesty was refreshing. And I
didn't seem to be afraid of him.
boy did I have him fooled, I was scared shitless....it was like being
with god
OK, I only have two rules
#1 Never salute me.
#2 Don't die on my watch
Yes sir
Now hit the sack, you have the next watch.
Watch?
We keep the PRC25 manned 24 hours a day
~I'll never forget those 4 VN Sailors and still regret not relieving
their misery~
Yup, Admrials didn't have to drive, they were interlectuals & thinkers
but somewhat mechanically challenged and uncoordinated due to age. This
was a full Admiral & some of them were so old and grouchy back
then....it was like driving Miss Daisy hahahaha. Ya hadda be really
mild mannered & respectfull of your elders and let the bitching and
cussing fly right on by, like it never happened...He had Marines on the
staff to guard him and his sea quarters, they were also supposed to
drive him while ashore. But he fired every Marine driver he ever had
and demanded a coxsun fill in. "Damn "Jarheads are churlish" was what
he told me. And hell as far as his personal security I was a quallifed
Master at Arms had a history
of being willing to use maximum force against bad sailors while under
arms. Lets see....what else did he say? oh year "Marines never did like
being bossed around by the United States Navy!" heh heh 0~;)P
Geeze, I thought Jerry K was the only FOS that down loaded my stories
and re read them till they were comitted to memory trying to gleen
free tips. You know what I think Chuck? You mussta rode a ship once and
some bosun turned the watter line to the troop shower off after you got
soaped up real good or just shut the hot water line down to hear the
Marines squeel in the showeres and you still have a woody for Sailors.
Fricking boot ass jarheads always did act like they had never heard of
water hours aboard Amphibious ships before. 0~;-*
