A rigger in the Mid-Atlantic area has been packing Reflex containers and
has been putting the ZP (canopy) portion of the primary (spring loaded)
pilot chute between the hard shell cap and the soft cosmetic cap. This
has already resulted in one reserve that took 12-15 seconds to open. The
manufacturer of this system had been notified on July 20, 1998 and has
contacted the rigger in question. He assured them he would recall all
rigs packed in this manner ... He has not! This past weekend a jumper
who owned the rig that had the 12-15 second delay approached me and
pleaded that she felt other rigs on our DZ had been packed the same way.
I examined 7 rigs , 6 packed by the rigger in question and 5 of the 6
were packed incorrectly. The other rig was packed correctly as was the
rig packed by another rigger. The pilot chute launches and is merely a
spring covered with mesh. Little or no pilot chute gets out from under
the cap.

These rigs were sold, packed and sealed by American Loft, Accurate
Skydiving or David "Bruce" Sully..... of Laurel, Maryland. His seal is
RV5.....He has been notified on July 20, 1998 by the manufacturer to
correct this problem immediately and has not recalled all of these
systems yet.

If you own a Reflex there is a little test I have been using to check
the pilot chute. Put your fingers under the edge of the cap and feel
under the edge of the primary (spring loaded) pilot chute. If you feel
fabric between the cosmetic cap and the fiberglass cap of the primary
pilot chute ..... Get your rigger. if there is no fabric you are
probably OK. Please have your rigger look at it anyway. Please print
this letter and take it to your local rigger or DZ. There are alot of
these systems out there so remember this and pass this information on.
If you have any more questions please call Mick Cottle at Flightline
Systems. 909-245-8828

Yeah, but without his persistence, I'd have been nowhere with this. He
went out on a big limb.
