When I lived in the Twin Cities, I often started to rollerski from
early April, latest in May or early June, depending on how I felt and
the weather. That area offers the best quantity and variety of safe
terrain I've seen. Here in the Rockies where good safe (for me)
options are fewer, I find once or twice a week is normally enough and
helps minimize the chances of injury. Double/single poling is the best
ski-specific strength exercise around, tho paddling is an excellent
alternative. Once every week or two I'll also use rollerskiing as a
speed (15x15-30secs) or interval (4-6 x 4-6 mins) workout (other times
I use an elliptical trainer, bike ride or pole hike). Is rs necessary
in summer? Not really, unless you are aiming for big event podiums. If
nothing else, I find indulging every so often helps remind my muscles
of skiing and fine tuning of technique.

Since I moved to the Boston area about 4 years ago I've been classic
rollerskiing about 10 miles almost every day at lunch time all through
the spring/summer/fall seasons. For me it's not so much for hard-core
training, but rather it's one of the few exercises my old joints seem
to tolerate. Plus it's just really fun, and of course it's great for
your technique development to be able to do it so often.
