I'm thinking of selling my classic skis and getting some backcountry ones that can also be used on groomed trails. Is it necessary to get NNN-BC or SNS-BC bindings? I'd like to keep my SNS profile boots (and save money).

I do not feel too much difference between NNN and standard SNS bindings.
I had tried once Fisher E99 with NNN bindings and I have now Atomic BC
skis (similar to the Fishers) with a standard SNS binding and those are
fine for strolling in the plains around Munich and for simple "rolling
hills" hiking in the Bavarian Pre-Alps.
For more advanced touring I prefer classic telemark bindings (with
leather or plastic boots) and standard alpine skis with skins. But this
is a different price range.

On thing BC bindings give you that the standard binding doesn't is a
selection of compatible boots that aren't completely out of their depth
on a very large amount of backcountry terrain.
Bear in mind what will happen if you need to walk. If my SNS boots are
anything to go by you don't want to be doing anything too adventurous in
them. One option is carry some overboots (I use Neos) or trail shoes
with you just in case.
For the actual skiing side, BC should give a bit more downhill control
as they're a bit chunkier but as long as you're not going anywhere out
of your comfort zone in terms of descents that's a moot point.
Pete.
