Last dance at Mammoth?

I am in the middle of a 3-day trip to Mammoth, probably the last time
this season. I drove up Monday-Tuesday night, sleeping in the van
along the way. I arrived at Chair 2 at about 8:30, thinking that was
opening time, only to find out that they had just that day changed the
operating hours to 7:30 - 2:00.
The good news is that the parking lot at Chair 2 never fills up - the
bad news is that the only way down is through a couple of strips of
snow pushed in from somewhere higher up the mountain, and today was
the last day I will try that chair.
Once I got above the base level mudholes, the snow was actually quite
good. It went through the normal spring-day cycle - icy hard in the
morning, nice corn for a couple of hours, and then heavy slop.
Tuesday I moved up the mountain with the conditions and I managed to
keep going until about 1PM, although with the short sleep overnight I
was nodding off in the chairs (which can be a real problem on Chair 23
- no safety bars).
Today I worked a little harder/smarter, getting up on the ridge on
Chair 23 earlier in the day. The surface was excellent the first few
runs, but then the loose stuff kicked up by skiers starting getting
heavy.
Tomorrow I plan to get an early start, hit the ridgeline before it is
beaten up to badly, and then bail out (all the way home) when I start
breaking a sweat.
Tidbits -
US Ski Team is at Mammoth for speed camp, both veterans and
prospects. They hit the mountain about 6AM to get in some runs while
the surface is still hard. The last 2 days, they have set up a series
of short GS runs starting at the base of Cornice Bowl down through the
ravines of St. Anton. They knock off around 11 and when the ropes are
down, that is suddenly the best run on the mountain (except for the
mudholes on the flats at the bottom). Their other training run - one
of the Fascination Race Arena trails - can only be approached through
a narrow remnant-snow pathway, but all those trial are in great shape
once the racers bail out.
The US Snowboard team is also on the mountain, practicing on a freshly
built superpipe off to the side of Chair 5, which is being run just
for their benefit. They can get down to 5 by running down to the
right of Chair 3, but there is no way to ski or board out without a
walk of a couple of hundred yards through the mud down to Chair 2.

I had planned to get up to the mountain early and then leave after
making a few runs, but things were so good I hung around until about
11:30. When I got up to the Chair 2 parking lot, it was obvious they
weren't going to be using it, because a drainage ditch had b een dug
across the one remaining pathway down, so I continued up to the Main
Lodge parking lot. Again the day started out hard-frozen surface, but
it improved with every run. I "decided" to quit several times, only
to tell myself "one more loop" when I got down to the base of Chair 1.
The conditions wer better than Wednesday because cold wind and
intermitent clouds kept the temperature down. There was visibly less
melting happening, but even so there was about half the snow on
Thursday near the base as there had been on Tuesday. On one ride up,
I rode with a patroller. We agreed that by Memorial Day customers
will be running single file through some areas. There are already
some signs of Spring cutbacks, other than the reduced lifts open -
only one worker in the stores and at the ticket sales counter, only
one cafeteria open, and not until 11AM (although Main Lodge coffee bar
is open early) and some seating areas roped off.
I also found that the ungroomed stretches off to the side of the
narrow groomed paths down Face of 3 and Cornice Bowl were in Spring
excellent condition. The sun and melt-freeze cycles have left a layer
of heavy corn on top with a lot of air spaces below that, making it
pleasantly carvable. Of course, I also took the fall of the week out
there, and that top surface is hard when your head hits it.
I rode up once with a US Ski Team coach. He said after they finish at
Mammoth, they will be off to Mt. Hood for 6 weeks and then down to
Chile.
On my way out, I noticed they were pushing snow around near the base
of Chair 2, perhaps to get ready for the weekend.
Wednesday afternoon I went for a walk around town. It was depressing
to see how many businesses had closed - several hotels boarded up,
restaurants gone, even the old pizza place my kids liked is just a
vacant lot.

I am all packed for lime rock this weekend leave in an hour, we run with
the trash cans 'Trans-am' heavy metal and loud about a second or two
slower than us with 3 or 4 times the horsepower.

Owens River water by the city of LA. The road crosses the open
stretch of the LA Aqueduct in a couple of places, and the pipes and
tunnels are visible up on the hillsides going through the desert
further south - and there is the dustbowl off to the east that used to
be Owens Lake. There are some slight benefits - like Lake Crowley and
Pleasant Valley Campground.
On an added note - the City of Los Angeles this year informed the the
Town of Mammoth Lakes that they (LA) can no longer allow them (ML) to
use the water in Mammoth Creek (which flows right through ML) for ML's
municipal water supply, since LA has owned the water for over 100
years.
I will also cross the eastern leg of the California Aqueduct soon
after 395 diverges from I-15. That water was not stolen. It was
acquired fair and square by Southern California outvoting Northern
California.
Now if we can just get a good couple of inches Saturday. The online
weather radar shows mixed rain and snow heading south through
California.

and the flowers die before they can get pollinated. It put out some
fruit one year, but they were kind of shriveled and burned. I wish I
had ground to plant stuff in.

Actually, the supermarket fruit we buy is crap. We must export the good
stuff, or sell it to the $2/peach stores. The ethnic produce markets do
better and cheaper, but aren't as convenient.

Would have done a second night, but husband broke some ribs and we had
to go to the Palmdale hospital. Nicer hospital than Pasadena. Stupid
substitute doctor there just administered a laxative and an hour later
some serious pain pills after I'd been screaming at the son of a bitch
for five minutes. I guess the bastard never read the "Do no harm" bit.
