Trying to revive grass skiing

Hi everyone,
I live in Australia where as you may know we have rather short snow
seasons lasting at best three months and pretty poor quality snow. For
the past few years I have been thinking how we could enjoy something
that at least remotely resembles skiing and finally came up with a
relatively simple design of skiing device that can carve on dry surface.
I had earlier tried rolling tread based ski but it's quite demanding in
terms of turning and hard with speed control. I guess in my younger
years it would have been fun but I am a bit less crazy these days.

I spent quite a bit on patent applications and building prototypes but I
am not sure if I should risk more funding to make a few more pairs
(short series manufacturing is quite expensive). This brief video shows

I had friends that developed the grass skiing stuff in the 70's/80's (?). It was something they messed around with but didn't get rich off of. They were basically inline skates before they were called inline skates. Now my buddy that developed those Easy Up shades? He made some cash!

Looks like they work - make a few more by hand, demonstrate them at ski
stations in the car park and see if anyone buys the demo boards; then
decide if there is a market. Same thing on grass anywhere there's a
crowd of youth looking for the next thing.

Given all the varieties of pavement/grass skis that turn up on youtube
just when viewing your video, it looks like you've got lots of competition.

Getting rich was not really my motivation when I started thinking about
the problem of safe carving-like dry surface ski. As I mentioned earlier
having short ski seasons is quite a pain especially after moving to
Australia from Europe where I spent best part of my life and could ski
from December to April. Anyway, I realise that this is not the kind of
business that you can make millions on but I'd be happy if I could make
in it similar money that I am getting from my IT job. After spending 20
years in the IT industry I'm definitely more passionate about skiing
than my profession.

Tires or wheels do not simulate edges very easily. Speed + slope +
uneven surface = unsafe conditions
I see stopping as an issue, I think new england slopes and think sharp
rocks.
The other day we were discussing going off track on to the grass and it
feels like you are given a burst of acceleration but it is a case of no
friction being generation by the grass and it mentally appears that your
are going faster where you have just lost all your tire grip.

Being rich has its drawbacks, well IT salary is going down so you might
equal what you make from grass skis.

Do you have sand dunes? Some sliding can be done on those. Grass doesn't recover as quickly as snow. I see the same public facility destruction of property that you get when skateboarders brake shit that they don't own were there to be a large number of "grass skiers". And commercially I don't think you could support enough grass to be economic.

Doesn't hurt to think outside the box though. Just my thoughts.

I thought about it and if it was a facility for a large number (whatever
it means) of grass skiers I'd try compacted woodchip mulch. There's
plenty of this stuff everywhere. When our power distribution company cut
branches around overhead power lines they woodchip them in the process
and take it to the rubbish dump. The nice thing about this type of
surface is that even if compacted it is very forgiving when you fall.

I guess I can't argue with this. It was a quick shot in the carpark near
the factory after the gear was just made just to show the concept to a
few people. When I get bigger wheels suitable for the grass and find a
more scenic place I'll try to come up with something more exciting.
Unfortunately it all takes time which I don't have too much working
full-time. Anyway, thanks for your feedback.

The wheels are the issue you are trying to replicate edges and are
stumbling into round things with different diameters with varying
contact patches running on inconsistent surfaces with rocks.

The bigger wheels you have the more stable handling will be but you
raise center of mass. With smaller wheels you reduce the center of mass
issue but you put more demand on the bearing and things like small
pebbles and sticks will really be felt.

But my two cents is I would want a product that would let you take turns
in GS style I enjoy the g-force in turns, and I could only envision
sliding on my hip on grass skis.

I did IT in NYC for 20 years as a consultant & field service and you
need to direct your destiny to the life style you want. Now I play with
sports racers & formula cars providing race engineering services and
race electronic sales & support. I ski race from dec to march or as much
as the snow permits.

1) Big wheels will raise the center of mass if the platform you are
standing on is in line with the axle. However, if you do a drop axle
design where the platform is considerably below the axle it might work
better but, as in cars, ground clearance becomes an issue, especially in
something long to emulate a ski.

If I were a snowboarder or skate boarder (which I'm not) I might like to
try something like this.

Being below the center line a quick thought it will give you more
radical camber changes with leaning one side to other, which might work
better you would be on wheel edge.

I'll be experimenting with brakes that engage when you do a very sharp
turn by tilting the beams supporting your feet to the max. The brakes
will only be added to the rear wheel assemblies. When the rear wheel is
turned to the max the tire will rub on the static brake. I am hoping
that this could even induce sliding of the rear wheels. Since there is a
spring mechanism that pulls the wheels back into the straight position
the friction will only happen when the turn is quite rapid like on snow
ski.

There is no question that it's impossible to replace snow. What I am
trying to achieve is to get as close as possible to real skiing. As far
as safety is concerned wearing some solid protective gear while skiing
in rough terrain will be a must.

IT salaries in Australia are holding reasonably well but given all the
competition from India I will not be surprised if they start going down.
Luckilly I am more on the telecom side of IT which can't be easily
outsourced :-)

skiing on Northeastern Firm. I bought a rock climbing helmet as NY
speedway has a regulation that over the wall crew has to wear a helmet
they do not care what kind a bicycle one would be useless but permitted.

class who died at 26 it is really comfortable.

My reason for the IT pay decreasing is much less hands on per individual
user. The base knowledge of the people not in IT using the pc or
whatever has increased you can not be working in a office and not know
word or excel at that point & you know what a file is. I think that at
this point in time there are very few jobs that do not involve some
aspect of computer and they are not rolling over and having massive
issues like they once had in the 80's and 90's.

Being a coder or working on low volume specialty stuff like race car
data acquisition equipment is a sure source of work if you can handle
the environment. There might be ten guys in the country that work on
multiple data acquisition manufacturers equipment I am a factory trained
support person for 3 and do service four other types. I build
competition wiring harness to aircraft and mil specs. Much like walking
the streets of nyc from one client to an other I walk the paddock and on
most weekends thursday to sunday and have 12 hours days in the sun or
rain. Then I go back to hotel and research issues for next day. As user
of technology race drivers are more abusive in total than any other type
user group and the stress makes a wall street trading floor like
kindergarten.

My point being most of the IT guys now were still in the conception
stage or grammar school and people certified in novell thought windows
was below them and everybody thought lantastic was crap but if you ran a
small office you could network at 10% of the costs of novell. & as what
I do now I play with assemblies of different computerized equipment in a
racing environment I was one of the first to work on a racing data
system. I do what other people wish they could do, but what they fail to
realize you can not get it from a book & it did not happen overnight.
