My wife and I are new to scuba diving. Does anyone have a favorite book on
identifying marine life in the Caribbean? That'll most likely be our first
destination. (and soon I hope!)

the set. Probably about $80 total at most dive shops.

Over the years, I've bought I.D. books for each island we've visited in
the Caribbean. They're OK, but never complete. Then I discovered the
the most useful choice for identifying marine life. And its not a book,
its a set of three. The author is Paul Humann, and the books are:

Reef Creature Identification
Reef Fish Identification
Reef Coral Identification

I don't have the third one yet, but if its anything like the first two,
it will be well worth the $35.00 or so that each volume cost.

Don't forget his new one, "Coastal Fish Identification, California
to Alaska". Without a doubt, the best one for the area. I believe he
also has one out for the Galapagos, as well.

While it's currently a bit difficult to use a CD while under
water, the CD title FISHES OF THE CARIBBEAN put out by Sea-D
Publishing (Grand Cayman) is great for learning about what you'll see
when you're down there.
CD's can be ordered directly from Sea-D and the have a web
page at:
http://www.cayman.org/sea-d/

Hope this helps. (BTW, come on down to Cayman - water's calm
and clear and warm and it's a great place to dive!)

This have already been done ... if so, pls forgive.

HOWEVER, there is a series of Caribbean life spiral bound books by New
World Publications -- all dive shops have them -- one on fish id, one on
reef creatures, one on corals. They're terrific ... semi-pricey, but
worth every nickel. You can also get a canvas travellers' case for them
for around $21 that helps protect them while you're on a trip ... also a
shelf case (cardboard) for about $10 to stand them up while you're at
home.

If you're seriously interested in Caribbean marine life, you may want
to contact REEF, the Reef Environmental Education Foundation, and ask
about their programs.

I don't have their phone number with me, but you can get it from information.

A good set, by Paul Humann " reef fish Identification"
"Reef creature Identification"
"Reef coral Identification"

all three have great pictures so that it is easy to ID what you saw.

I really like Paul Humann's Reef Fish Identification guide. You can
find it in any well-stocked dive store, or you can contact the publisher
-- New World Publications of Jacksonville, Florida.
