In the thread http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=144994 Kimber
is mentioned as being injured and in the hospital.

I sure don't want any discussions to evolve here about technical
specifics and specualtions of which we know not, but if anyone is in a
position to confirm and offer assistance... or if there is anything we
can do, please advise.

Just read down through the latest (8 pages already) and a lot of people
apparently trying to make contact.

The summary from all of SB's traffic is:

"Yes she was involved in an incident and is hospitalized under heavy
sedation."

"Yes, the family is urging people to not speculate about the incident."

Agreed. For the most part, it is to pray for the best.

Most definatly not good news. I hope all is well with her. She stayed at
my home for a couple of days when she had her surgery here in NY.
Wonderful person. I pray that all is well.

And if anything else gets posted over there, the fuckin' censors will
delete it...

Damn, makes me appreciate USENET all the more... Even if we do have to
put up with the cowardly anonymous fuckin' trolls sometimes...

Details appear to be extremely sparse. If you know anything the rest of
us do not, please post it on SB. Many of us are friends of Kimber and
are absolutely starving for more information. We all desperately want to
know what's going on with her. None of us want to censor actual
information. The only posts we've deleted thus far have been pure
speculation from people who don't know her and downright rude and
uncalled for posts.

If you post any actual information about her condition on SB, I will
make absolutely sure that it does not get deleted.

There is a new thread on SB from Joel Silverstein containing the actual
facts as they are known and disseminated as Kimber's family wishes. It
is located at:
http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?t=145172

You will notice this post has not been deleted.

Again, if you have any actual information, *please* share it.

On the contrary, the post is gone. SB censors at it again.

Groan.

It's not gone. It got merged in with the other already-existing thread.

God forbid you actually take a look at the original thread before going
on the offensive.

We looked where you pointed. We could do no more. Not many of us are SB
members. We're a bit too independent and anti censorship, not to mention
abrasive for that group's tender feelings.

We appreciate your courtesy in sharing the information with us, but please,
when you provide a link, try to ensure it actually leads to what you wanted
us to see.

And just who would have moved it? The censors.
You can call them moderators if you like, but calling a steaming pile of
crap a pie doesn't make it edible. Thank you for the information about
Kimber but you should drag your thin skinned sorry ass back to the
protection of SB.

For those that did not find the message, here's a combination of Joel
Silverstein's 2 posts related to Kimber's accident and condition. It ain't
much, but it's all we have.

______________

June 6, 2006

Kimber's family understands that you all are her friends and would like some
information, to that end I have been given permission by them to make this
single statement.

On Saturday June 3rd 2006 Kimber was on our dive charter off the dive boat
Lois Ann to the wreck of the Hogan. After her second dive she surfaced, made
her way on to the dive platform and informed the crew she was not feeling
well.

The crew of the Lois Ann got her onto the deck and began immediate first aid
treatment. We then got the boat secured and underway while calling in for
assistance from the USCG and other local agencies. She was transferred to
primary care within an hour or so of the incident and then taken to a
hospital for evaluation, medical care and treatment.

She is still in the hospital and being well cared for. Her family which
includes her mother, aunt, and her boyfriend are maintaining constant
contact with her care givers, nurses, and physicians. .

Kimber suffered a medical emergency while on a dive boat and was evacuated;
this is not a dive accident that needs to be analyzed at this time. It is
out of respect for her medical privacy that the family does not wish to
discuss her condition. Her family has asked that you keep the chatter on
this to a minimum and focus your energies on having good thoughts for her
speedy recovery. The community support as demonstrated by the wishes on this
board is something simply incredible.

It's natural for all of us who are her friends to want as much information
as possible, immediately. However, Kimber's family would appreciate some
privacy during this difficult time. They ask that no flowers or gifts be
sent to her and that no visitors are to come by. If there is more
information that is needed to be released they will do it in due time.

In the meantime, I am focused on helping to properly handle the tremendous
amount of administrative effort that follows any evacuation, in order to
preserve the critical data.

Thank you for all your support and prayers for her speedy recovery.

Respectfully submitted,
Joel Silverstein

Accident/ Incident Management .

When ever there is an accident or an incident that results in care or
evacuation off a dive vessel there are many documents that need to be
completed by all the people that were on board, provided care, and helped in
any way. These reports are all for Coast Guard, Police, Hospital, Insurance
companies, etc. There are certain privacy laws that come in to play that
sometimes restrict the information that can be released by parties who were
involved. It is common practice that an overall silence be placed on crews
and participants while all of this is going on until such time as any
particular release is authorized by the patient/victim or their family.
While this may not be what is wanted by the "community" this just happens to
be the way it is.

I've been in the professional end of diving for going on 18 years now. I
have seen and been involved in the management of diving accidents and
incidents on more than one occasion, I ran an emergency hyperbaric facility
in NY for 3 years, I work as an expert witness and consultant evaluating
diving accidents and incidents and have a good handle on what goes on here.
Suffice to say that Kimber's first aid, evacuation and transfer to higher
medical care was as swift and professional as I have ever been involved in.
She is being cared for in the most appropriate place at this time.

I will ask you to respect the wishes of her family, and to appreciate that
since this was my charter I am restricted by confidentiality in discussing
any particulars. Please find a place in your heart to pray for Kimber's
speedy recovery.

Thank you for your concern.

The Hogan was a Wikes class destroyer that was decommissioned in 1945 and
sunk as a bombing target soon afterward. She lies on the bottom at 130 feet
in somewhat broken up condition.

Based on what I could find quickly, the Hogan does not appear to be a
particularly complex dive, but it is sometimes done as a decompression dive,
sometimes from the

According to the limited information I was able to find quickly, the ship is
sometimes done as a technical dive, including significant decompression. At
least one such dive, found in someone's AOL dive log, was done from the Lois
Ann.

Nothing in this post suggests anything about the dive Kimber was doing the
day of her "medical emergency."

Jeez, Lee, reposting it was almost as damaging as the bad link.

The "Doc" referenced above wasn't me. I'm still the same curmudgeon I
always was.

Kimber always appreciated me for that. About a year ago she sent me
photos of her new "zipper cut" hair-do. What a piece of work.

You get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning?

We all know that Scuba Board is "moderated" in a way that we would call
censorship. That's why many of us chose to have nothing to do with the
forum. No surprise there.

In fact, if you look for it, you'll find that Joel Silverstein's message,
which I copied to rec.scuba, includes a statement that it was edited to
remove names. No surprise there either.

Personally, I appreciate the fact that Jon thought to share the fact that
Kimber has a problem and that there was a statement, no matter how limited
it was, of the events that led to her current condition, whatever that
condition might be. Some news, even from a censored source, is better than
no news at all.

yeah, been a long frustrating day (damn, and it's only half over) and I
decided to vent ;-)

That's why I thanked him for the notice and the info BEFORE I told him
to take a flying f#*% at a rolling donut.
While my curiosity is high, right now I couldn't careless about the
particulars of the incident, I'm more interested in Kimber's condition
and the prognosis. Even that is being blacked out on SB.

Nothing concerning her condition is being blacked out on SB. I promise you.

Again, if you have any updates on her condition beyond what Joel posted,
please let us know. Post it here, post it on SB, post it anywhere. It
won't be deleted and no updates concerning her condition have been
deleted from SB.

Please, if you know anything.. share it.
