Hell Greg, I can't even spell Wakatobi
where the heck is it?
It's actually an anagram of the islands that make up the archipelago:
WAngiwangi, KAledupa, TOmea, and BInongko. Wakatobi Marine Park is
the second largest marine park in Indonesia.

Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, an area also known as Wallacea.
Wakatobi Resort is on an islet off Tomea Island which is in the lower
right corner of this map (the Tukang Besi islands):

The resort offers three boat dives a day and unlimited shore diving.
To get there, we're flying 17.5 hours to Bangkok, 4 more hours to
Bali, then a 2 hour charter flight to Tomea and a drive and a 20
minute boat ride to the resort's island. That's a day of travel each
way, not counting the overnight we have to do in Bali on the way there
(we're actually going to do two), an overnight on the way back, and
yet another overnight layover in Bangkok. We could have flown to Bali
direct, but I got a good deal with air miles on Thai Airways and an
overnight in Bangkok never hurts. (Before the resort started flying
the charter flight, it used to take a good deal longer to get there.)
There are mixed opinions on how "world class" the diving is there, but
all seem to agree that it's a nice resort and well-run dive op. I'm
just looking forward to taking lots of pictures, especially on the
unlimited shore dives where they'll allow me to solo and not bore
Janna to death spending an entire dive on one or two subjects.
You're welcome to join us, Joe. I'm sure there's still space
available.
Sounds Great, however, Not enough dough and I am recovering from Tommy
John surgery - and battling an infection that developed in the elbow
incision. The elbow wouldn't stop me but I used up a lot of
vacation/sick time.
Wasn't the last time in the part of the woods - there was a Tsunami?
I just booked my air fare: Only $40 total, and that's for business
class! (plus a whole lot of air miles)
> Wasn't the last time in the part of the woods - there was a Tsunami?
While the big one hit when we were in Myanmar, there actually was a
small tsunami when we were last in Bali. That one was measured in
inches, however, so no one really cared. Technically, though, we're 2
for 2 for tsunamis on our southeast Asia trips. Will this one make it
3? We'll see. I sure hope it doesn't hit Wakatobi since the
bungalows are right on the beach and made out of wood - I've seen
first-hand what a sizeable tsunami can do to wood bungalows on the
beach and it ain't pretty.
