Hi,

My name is Paul, or should I say Chikai? Last Tuesday I became a Cub leader
and I was formally given my new scouting nickname Chikai, the jumping rat
referred to in the story of Red Dog in Rudyard Kipling's second Jungle Book.

Scouting being as big as it is, I suppose there are many more Chikai's
around albeit probably not as many as Akela, Baloo or Bagheera. I'm looking
for you Chikai's out there, to exchange stories on how you got your name,
how you relate to it and to see if you came up with some sort of name badge
depicting Chikai to wear on your uniform.

Please drop me a note if you have any information or would like to share
whatever I receive.

Yours in Scouting,

Paul ''Chikai'' Joosten

Hi Paul

My scouting name is Kiwi, (ex-pat New Zealander)

I was curious about your name being Chikai, our cub leaders here all go
under the name of Akela although they may have other "scout" names as well.

When you do Grand Howl do the cubs address you as Akela?

Hi Greg,

Akela is the name of the chief cub leader, I'm only an assistant. Like
Akela, names like Baloo, Bagheera, Hathi and Chikai are derived from the
names Rudyard Kipling gave to some of the animals he described in the
stories from the Junglebooks. In Holland all cub leaders have their own
name, and Akela is reserved for the Cub Master.

As out troop has three packs of cubs, we have some 15 leaders so most of the
more commonly used names were not available for me. Hence the lesser known
"Chikai"...

When we start a pack meeting we do the howl like cubs all over the world.
Instead of Akela our cubs of the "Sionie" pack use the name Louie as our
particular pack does not have an Akela and Louie is the nickname of our own
senior leader. Curiously enough his name is not in the original Jungle
books, but borrowed from the Disney movie. So much for tradition ;)

A firm left hand,

Chikai

Thanks Paul,
When you say "chief cub leader" do you mean at the national level?

I have added the aus org scouting to the addys as some of our Aussies may
have some input on your name.
