IRVINE � A man suspected of embezzling more than $100,000 from
the Girl Scouts of Orange County is awaiting possible
extradition to California after being arrested at a Wisconsin
airport, authorities said.
U.S. Marshals acting on a tip from Irvine detectives took
Mawufemor Bierko into custody earlier this month. Local
authorities are working to extradite him to Orange County, where
he is wanted on an arrest warrant, Irvine police Lt. Julia Engen
said.
Girl Scout leaders reported embezzlement Feb. 1, 2011. They had
confronted Bierko about some "financial irregularities," Engen
said, but he reportedly disappeared before police became
involved.
"He went out to lunch that day and never came back," Engen said.
Investigators suspect Bierko, who did accounting work for the
Girl Scouts, used "visual tricks" in a spreadsheet program to
mask the embezzlement of more than $100,000 through large checks
that he wrote to himself.
Police allege Bierko deposited the checks in an account at a New
York bank before apparently transferring the money out of the
country. The money has not been recovered, Engen said.
The Girl Scouts of Orange County, which is currently celebrating
the national organization's 100th anniversary, recovered all the
funds through insurance, and none of the group's activities were
affected, according to a statement.
"Our council has always followed strict accounting practices,"
the statement said. "Out of an abundance of caution following
the incident, we redoubled our accounting controls and feel
confident that we are protected on a go-forward basis."
The Girl Scouts of Orange County, based in Irvine, has a budget
of more than $8 million annually. Each year, about 66 percent of
funding comes from Girl Scout cookie sales and selling other
products, such as nuts, snacks and magazines, a report from the
Girl Scouts said. The rest of the funding comes from private
donations.
Bierko attended Cal State Long Beach from 2005 to 2007 and
graduated with a degree in business administration, according to
the registrar. He transferred there from Golden West College in
Huntington Beach, according to the admissions & records office.
At Cal State Long Beach, Bierko was the executive vice president
of the school's Golden Key International Honor Society,
according to a 2007 university newsletter about the campus'
chapter.
The newsletter quoted Bierko as saying, "My long-term personal
objective is to assist individuals and families from developing
countries who are not as fortunate to have the opportunities we
have here in the U.S. I believe I can make a difference in
someone's life."
The newsletter also said Bierko worked part-time at Bank of
America.
