One of the commissioners examining the BSA's position
is a gay Eagle scout.

>Well, when they get called before a >government panel, the BSA again has to
>admit the truth and state that "our plan is >TO BE a separate organization".
Don't be so hard on the national BSA organization, Brian...blame all of those
local BSA Councils STILL HOLDING TO Learning for Life/Exploring units!!!
Those "cash cows" in those Councils are bringing lots of money and support even
though the BSA has TOLD local Councils outright that they WILL SEPARATE AND
MANAGE SEPARATELY Learning for Life units, individuals and activities AWAY FROM
the "traditional BSA programs."
It's those local Councils whom have not "gotten the clue" which has been
forcing the BSA to abandon it's two-year weeing of Learning for Life. By now:
*Learning for Life Centers are supposed to be established in locations AWAY
FROM the BSA traditional Council offices; and in those cases whereby it's
impractical to do so, to be on a DIFFERENT FLOOR or with DIFFERENT ENTRANCES
than the "traditional program"
*Learning for Life literature will state the Learning for Life Corporation,
with a DIFFERENT ADDRESS than the "traditional BSA address" (the address will
be within the BSA's professional academy down the road in Arlington, Texas)
*Learning for Life will have its OWN professional cadre, called "Unit-Serving
Executives" to manage and administer the Learning for Life program locally,
regionally and nationally (they are using the same regions as the BSA)
*Learning for Life will have their first national conference in which Explorers
will be able to elect their own National Explorer President once again (this
was supposed to happen next year; don't bet on it happening)
*and Learning for Life will have weened off the BSA local Council budgets,
develop their own budgets and for the first time, be separate organizations in
getting monies from United Ways and Appeals and other organizations.
All of this was supposed to happen, according to the Learning for Life
Timetable which was distributed to professionals in 1999 by the end of THIS
YEAR (2001 except for the National Explorer Conference, which is scheduled for
2002).
What happened?? Like I said, Brian, it's NOT the National organization
dragging its feet, but that of local BSA Councils not willing to give up on
their "cash cows".
Councils have complained that they don't have anyone trained to deal
exclusively with Learning for Life; that monies connected to the Council ties
them to provide career development and vocational programs through the old
Exploring program (which doesn't exist any more and therefore the connections
should be broken and new ones established with the new Corporation); and that
suitable facilities to house one or two professionals and support staff is hard
to come by (yeah, right...)
To prevent future embarrassment, the BSA should be telling it's field staffs to
DISTANCE THEMSELVES from Learning for Life and let it fall or fly on it's own.
Give them the resources, assist them, but let them go off on their own.
Councils won't do it. They have too much to lose, so they think.
My contention is, however, they have too much to lose, if they don't follow the
BSA's lead....

An interesting spin on some good news for the BSA. The news is that LA's
police commission decided not to sever its ties with the BSA, sorry to
disappoint you Brian. Learning for Life is intended to be a separate
organization structurally and financially.
from the article:
"The Los Angeles Police Commission on Tuesday decided to temporarily continue
its ties with the Boy Scouts of America after receiving assurances that the
group had
taken steps to create a separate program overseeing the Police Explorer program"
But it was try at a spin from Brian on some very good news for the BSA
bill

You'll notice that the BSA has been put on notice that LA
won't tolerate discrimination. Sorry to disappoint you, Bill.
>Learning for Life is intended to be a separate
>organization structurally and financially.
Now they just have to actually DO this.

Good news for the BSA? I thought Learning for Life was a separate
organization? How could news concerning a separate organization that
DOESN'T practice the BSA's discrimination be good for the BSA?
Talking out of both sides of your mouth again, eh?
Your grammar seems to break down when you're trying to turn
a sow's ear into a silk purse; "But it was try at a spin"??
