I've narrowed down the choice to
Asics Cumulus 11
Adidas Supernova Glide
Nike Pegasus 26

All three feel OK on my feet, and all cost about the same price. Does
anyone have any opinions, positive or negative, about these shoes? (The
store has a 60-day return policy, so if a pair doesn't work out, I can
return it and try another pair, so I'm not too worried about getting a
"wrong" pair, but I do hope that my first choice is my final choice.)

Asics Cumulus are really comfortable.

I've always found Adidas shoes to be a little narrow but if they feel ok...

Never too old to go barefoot. ;-)

Admittedly it's getting a bit cold for that (depending on where you live)
but the Vibram VFFs are fun to run in.

They will actually let you wear them for 60 days and then let you return
them or do they give you 60 days to get around to trying them and
deciding? If the first case, sounds like a great store.

It's close to impossible to assume what works for others will work for
you . You can collect wars stories(data) but their experiences may not
match yours. Many years back I was wearing a model that most hated. I
bought about 10 pairs and loved them. I've also experienced the reverse,
everyone loved them and I found they sucked.

May I suggest that once you find the shoe that you like, try to buy
enough pairs to get you through you next significant race(s). You don't
want to try to find a new pair too close to a race. Murphy's law - the
next model is out and they don't have your size in the old model. And if
they tell you the new model is the same or better - the check is also
in the mail.

I just bought three pairs of shoes to get me through my spring races. I
also have a new pair still in the box. I race and train in the same
model so have only one brand/model to contend with. I bought two of the
old model that I know work to cover my race, and one of new pair of the
following model. I will work in the new model down the line so I know
one way or another I can move to it. If I time it right I buy most of my
shoes as the new model comes out, very cheaply. I paid $65 for the old
and $99 for the new. I go through 4-6 pairs a year.

Yes Dot, I'm staying with the Brooks GTS9 with the new 10's. I'm not
going back to the Asics until I see if they removed the brick midsole
they added to the 2140's in the 50's.

Yes. When the salesperson told me that, I asked, "No matter how worn they
are?" and he said "Yes."

I realize that, but when there's no other way to discern any difference,
that helps.

I know; that happened with the Pearl Izumis that I had been wearing a while
back; they upgraded the model, and I just didn't like the newer model. I
went through four pair of them, and wound up switching to Asics.

Oh, as a result of the gait analysis at the store, I'm switching from a
motion control (Asics 2140) to a neutral shoe. In the past, every gait
analysis has shown me to be on the border between the two, but this time
two gait analyses by two different people at the same store on different
days showed me to be neutral.

I'm going to be buying two pair of whatever I decide upon; that's all I can
afford right now. I'm going to get them on Friday, which is nine days
before my next race (a half mara). I'll run in only one pair of them the
week before the race, and on race day I'll decide whether to wear them or
my current shoe. (The reason for Friday is that there's a sale that starts
tomorrow, and that the mall has a special that starts on Friday that will
get me two tickets to the Nutcracker.)

Thanks for the feedback.

I decided a month or two ago that after the PF Chang marathon in January,
I'm going to give the Vibrams a try.

I'm thinking these could be great fun for uphill running. Downhill on
rocky trails seems scary tho, I want armor for that.

I don't have any rocky trails near here, nor any significant downhills in
less than a 45-minute drive.

Much as I hated the tank-like feel of the Blurs, they do have a really
nice forefoot for me and I can wear my neoprene socks in them with no
problem. At -10F, I really liked the extra shoe compared with my lighter
shoes in those conditions. They're also getting a lot more flexible, as
someone suggested they would.

My NB749s do well under many conditions, but found out yesterday that
they accumulate some of this slushy stuff in the ball of the foot, so I
had to stop to kick the stuff out every so often. With snowshoes cleats,
I'd spray cleats with pam to avoid balling up under forefoot. When I was
dealing with cold, packed snow, they were fine.

I'm mostly alternating those two pairs right now.

I added some Mizuno Ascends to my collection a few weeks ago, but
haven't used them yet. When seasons change, I don't like to be trying
new shoes at the same time - too many variables. I needed to get a few
options on the table.

I've been running in Ascends for a couple of years. I have
challenging feet (narrow heels, high arches) and they've
done pretty well for me. I like them and worry about it
given Mizuno's history of wrecking great shoes. They are,
unfortunately, too drafty for this time of year in
Fairbanks. I haven't gotten the shoe situation sorted out
yet but we've now got enough snow for skiing, which I enjoy
more, frankly.

And despite last week's cold snap (highs of -18F on Friday
-25F on Saturday) there hasn't been a day yet where I've
been in the city and haven't seen people running.

Thanks. I've got narrrow heels, high arches, and wide forefeet. It's the
wide forefeet why some folks sent me that direction.

I usually use neoprene socks or overbooties when it's really cold.
That's fine for a few hours, but feet would sweat in an ultra-length
race, so one reason why I haven't tried any winter ultras. I'm ok with
ultimax liners under smartwools for many conditions, but below 0F I just
need something more.

Doesn't surprise me at all. YOu probably also see people biking to the
office / campus in the ice fog.;) I was wondering how you were doing
since we were getting daytime temps near -10F, give or take a few -
which is almost as cold as we normally get and 20 degrees below where we
normally are this time of year. Now we're warmer than normal.
