Another rejection letter from the Marine Corps Marathon

Marathon REJECTION LETTERS started showing up.
Thanks a lot MCM for SHOUTING OUT the fact that we were once again not picked.
As practically everybody knows by now, using capital letters in an e-mail in
this fashion is tantamount to SHOUTING.
What is the objective of this e-mail, I wonder. To annoy people? Telling
someone that they are 'Not yet in' is meaningless, especially after the
organizers of the lottery had already advised people that they would inform
them if selected. We don't need a negative message - it is bad enough not
having been selected, without someone reminding us!
Also, why the early calls for quitting? Jeez, we have only been in the
lottery for a few weeks and they are already asking us to drop out. Not in so
many words, but there are big hints in two places in the 'rejection' e-mail, as
to what to do if you want to withdraw your name. Why do they think we put our
names in the lottery on the first day it opened - just to drop out a couple of
weeks later? No way - we want to get in, not give up - we are marathon
runners, remember....!
So altogether a very poor public relations move. If the Marine Corps wants to
alienate a bunch of people who are really keen to run the MCM, keep on sending
these rejection e-mails.
Also, the person who wrote the e-mail (and who got paid by the Marine Corps &
indirectly the U.S. taxpayer) needs a swift kick in the pants for shoddy
editing. There are at least two grammatical errors: a spelling error (
'eligile') and a redundant word - 'your friends at the the Marine Corps
Marathon' - in the last line.

did I never get any rejection letters in the first 2 weeks of the lottery,
in the 3rd, when my name was picked, I was never sent a confimration that I
had in fact been picked and that my credit card was going to be charged
(which actually caused my card to get denied somewhere else before I
realized what was going on). But the only way I knew was by going to the
website and typing in my last name (a rare last name) into the lottery look
up. How odd.

Sounds like DoItSports strikes again. I've been less than impressed
by them in the past on other events.

get in??:-)
I don't mean to be facetious,I know I've been desperate to run in a few
races myself,but is anything special about this one?

not getting in. My beef is about the way in which the organizers keep SHOUTING
at me that I am NOT YET IN, while hinting that I drop out of contention.
My brother ran the Marine Corps Marathon a few years ago, and loved it, hence
my interest in getting a number. However, the MCM isn't the only game in town
- I'm quite happy to settle for the Chicago Marathon... :-)

relates to the fact that it is too popular and the DC government will not
allow nearly as many runners as would like to run, so they are trying
different ways of allocating the available spots. I ran it twice and I was
locked out last year. This year I am running Dublin Ireland I don't know
about next year.
Frankly I liked the race a lot. However it seems they are having less
than fantastic success in finding a good way of awarding positions.

Well I don't know if MCM has anything to do with the army as the name
suggests, but with the experience of my military service I would say that
the rejection/approval system seems only natural IF it does :o)

The Western States 100 has a lottery system also but with a caveat
of hope. They keep track of rejections and are guaranteed only two
thumbs down so you can do it every three years. At least a light at
the end of the tunnel.

I did it once at that was enough. Well organized but a boring
course, in my opinion. With the exception of Boston, Vermont City
and another local race, I seldom went back. Now the furthest I
may run on a road is 10k.

I'll say no more about my military service other than that my 'troops' are
nick-named 'Devil-defender-battalion'. And naturally I was talking about
my own countries armed forces.

Not the name - it sure does associate with army doesn't it? - but the
lottery system which was found irrational by some posters - for example
someone succesfull in getting a place from the lottery to the marathon
never getting a notification of it but finding it out almost accidentaly
from a web listing - like recruits awarded a weekend of-duty finding it
out sunday night from the company bulletin board which happened to some
while I was in the army.
Not that this really is that big of a deal, just a poorly executed system
for limiting attendance.
