I know how lower back pain can be, but not caused from arthritis. I
injured my back about 5 years ago at work and was in almost constant
pain up until last year until I started running again. The pain has
almost dissapeared (99.9%). Motorcycling is also one of my hobbies
and before after a couple hours in the saddle my lower back would be
killing me... now, the pain has pretty much disappeared, which makes
riding so much better.
I know that our conditions are different, but I just wanted to share
my experience with lower back pain in general. I hope you find a
solution.

Yes, toughing it out despite lower back pain, which comes and goes; always
there but worse some days. I can really feel it when I stand upright and lean
backwards. Have tried various exercise regimes, chiropractic treatment
(temporary relief) different sleeping posture, etc. but nothing really seems to
help. Physician seems to think that there is no disk damage - not that I would
lightly submit to surgery in any event...
Oddly enough, the pain is not present when I run (except an occasional jolt
when I twist my torso) but I can't stand still for10 minutes before discomfort
sets in.

For each of us like Brad, Bert, and Victor who just sort of tough it out or find
running helps us deal with chronic back pain, there are probably the same number
who experience worse symptoms. It's an individual thing.
Be careful and try to isolate activities/factors that help and hurt. Then do the
ones that help and avoid the ones that hurt. <g>
