Hard textured ball to massage SI joint and gluts

I use the tennis ball method of massaging the SI joint area. For
example, go to http://kelziebeebe.blogspot.ca/2011/06/self-massage-with-balls.html
and search for the phrase "Butt and Back of the Thigh" without
quotes. I find that the tennis ball gets soft very quickly, and I
don't like the variation of hardness as the tennis ball ages and gets
replaced. Is there a hard-ball version of the tennis ball for
physiotherapy purposes? It should be textured on the surface so that
it doesn't slip as one rolls around on it. The closest I found was a
hard BASEBALL, but only texturing is the threaded seams.

From surfing the web, I ran across the idea of a lacrosse ball (http://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lacrosse_ball) but it might be a bit small (or
my cheeks are too pudgy).

I think a 6"-8" Posture Ball should do the trick, if the inflation
pressure isn't too soft or hard. I've been using an old junior-sized soccer
ball, which is perfect for hip rolling, but I inflated it very high to make
it hard enough to be effective, and it blew up :(

Check out the Goosebumps massage ball. I think I got it at a marathon expo
a few years ago. It's hard and has little nubbins on it. I don't remember
the price & don't know if any of the apparently similar items I see in a
Google search are by the same company (didn't pursue it that much). Mine is
orange, has the Goosebumps name on it (& made in USA), and is about the
size of a baseball or softball (fits easily in my size-small hand).

The little nubbins on this look a lot smaller than on my Goosebumps ball --
mine look more like a lot of little mountains, pro-tec's look more like
unfinished molehills, kinda flat. -:)

They do indeed. I'm kind of relying on the ball rather than the bumps
to grind the muscle knots. Thanks, rms.

Isn't it nice to have a range of choices! If one thingum doesn't do the job
you have several others to try out.

Browsing the vendors at one of the large marathons (& some other Big Races)
expos is a good opportunity to try out these things -- and of course buy
them "at a discount".

My one-sentence review of this is that it's good for hitting hot spots
in the upper hamstrings, glutes & rear areas of the hip joints, but too
small to comfortably use on the front part of the hip area, like the inner
hip flexors & upper quads; a larger ball, say 7-8", would be much easier to
lay on and control.

Just wanted to thank respondents. I'm finding the lacrosse ball works just fine, but good to know there are all these references to alternatives for the future.

The lacrosse ball works great for the muscle beneath the SI joint, but higher up where it's predominantly bone, I have to resort to the tennis ball.
