For most establishments, I'll agree with you. I don't happen to like
Pepsi, but fortunately most places that have Pepsi also have other options
available.
But if you're gonna charge me $2 for 20 ounces (incidentally, to put that
into perspective, that's $0.10/ounce or $12.80/gallon!), it had better be
worth my while. Hell, for that kind of money it ought to be Hofbrau or
Molson. Why should I pay an exorbitant price for a product I don't even want?
The anser, of course, is "I shouldn't." Which is why over the course of
the entire season I only bought one bottle and one fountain serving of
Pepsi at Cedar Point; two bottles and two fountain servings of Coke at
PKI. And three or four servings of birch beer at Knoebel's during the PPPPP.

Well, true...and I wasn't saying that a brand of soda would keep
someone away from a certain park or restaurant (whether inside a park
or not). And, true, some people will drink whatever they have on-hand,
Coke or Pepsi. However, my point was just that some people do have a
strong preference and might not buy a soda if it's not the one they
want or like. I'm not sure how many people are like that...nor am I
sure if it would be cost-effective to the park...maybe, maybe not...
nor am I sure if Coke or Pepsi WOULD even want to share a park.
But it would be nicer for the guest...and might cause the park to get
more money.
For instance, there are times when I wanted something to drink by
PKD...so I thought I'd get a 20-oz. bottle from one of the Coke
machines (for $2). However, I didn't feel like something as "heavy"
as Coke or Diet Coke, Surge isn't so great (esp. when I'm spending
$2), and Sprite was too "light" and had no caffeine (hey, half my
blood is half blood and half caffeine..hehe). I would've liked a
Mountain Dew...but, alas, it's nowhere to be found at PKD. That
could've been an additional $2 (which probably would go to Coke
anyways...wonder how the money is shared (if at all) from those
Coke machines) spent by me. But I saved my $2.
Maybe I'm unusual...(heck, I know that I am!)... But maybe some
choice in soda would increase soda sales at theme parks (esp. on
hot summer days, when drinks sell like hot cakes). Maybe not.
-Roy E. Grimm
Well, sure, it would be great to have lots of choices in everything, but
the soda industry is far more complex than you might think and involves
a LOT more than just which soda a park will sell.
I work in a restaurant that sells Pepsi. Pepsi representatives help to
maintain the fountains and fountain guns. If anything goes wrong with
any aspect of our soda delivery, they fix it. I realize that this would
only affect the non-machine sales, but who would a park call if a
fountain that sold both Pepsi and Coke went down? Pepsi isn't likely to
want to help fix the means for selling Coke, and vice versa! If there
was something wrong with the carbon dioxide delivery, which would affect
both products, who would fix it? I doubt that such a system would be
made available by either company. And would pepsi provide CO2 -- never
mind the hoses, the gun or machine, etc. for coke? Not likely!
But more importantly, soda sales to any major company (including
amusement parks, restaurant chains, fast food, movie theaters, etc)
involve a large complex legal and benefits package that involves much
more than which product gets sold. For example, when you get an
admission discount for bringing a soda can to a park, this is a
considerable part of the advertising for the park (and the soda) which
is certainly part of the contract. The soda companies probably pay for
part or all of the advertising, which brings more people to the park.
Those neat machines with coaster logos or pictures are specially
designed for the parks at some cost (probably to the soda company.)
Sometimes there are contests providing trips to the park. All of this
is part of the major deal made between the park or chain and the soda
company or distributor. The major part of this deal is the EXCLUSIVE
sales of the soda products in the park -- which is the primary reason
the soda companies provide all of these perks. After all, you might not
like Pepsi, but if you're thirsty at the park (or a restaurant, etc.)
and it's the only cola product they offer, then you're likely to buy and
drink it. And that makes you more likely to buy and drink it elsewhere.
Finally, the soda company offers a better rate to the
park/chain/restaurant/etc based on the fact that they only sell their
soda products. Even if it were possible to sell products from multiple
companies, they'd probably be even more expensive.
So think of it this way: if having Coke available means that your
favorite park doesn't get a few million in free advertising, which means
either that the park has to pay for it or that they get fewer customers
and make less money, and if that means that they can't afford that new
coaster, would it be worth it?
I'm just pointing these things out, so that people don't waste their
time complaining to the parks. Personally, I rarely drink soda, and
have minimal interest in which one I drink on the rare occasions in
which I have some.
"Paramount's Kings Dominion is proud to be associated with the following
corporate sponsors:"
"Always Fun, Always Coca-Cola"
"When you need to quench that big thirst, Coca-Cola Classic is
ready for you at numerous locations throughout the Park. Whether
it's a delicious slice of pizza or any of the other mouth-watering
food items, Coca-Cola Classic adds refreshment. And don't forget
to take a ride on the Log Flume sponsored by Coca-Cola, located in
our Old Virginia Theme area. Always Refreshing, Always Coca-Cola."
Hmmmm... So Coca-Cola sponsors the Log Flume at PKD... I wonder
what that really means...
Also listed as corporate sponsors are: Chevrolet (sponsor of the
Paramount Theatre, plus it has its cars and trucks situated
throughout the park), Kodak (which is sold in PKD stores, unlike
Chevrolet's products (*grin*), and Kodak more-or-less sponsors
the "Kodak Photo Spots" throughout the park, Marva Maid Dairy
(they used to have a different dairy company, btw) which serves
"fresh" (don't ask me WHY the word 'fresh' is in quotation marks...
hmmmm...) milk and ice cream, WRVQ FM/Q94 which broadcasts live
from PKD occasionally, Chevy Chase Bank who has ATM machines inside
the park, WUSA-Channel 9 from Washington D.C. which has the
"Official Meteorologist of Paramount's Kings Dominion", Doug Hill,
and the combination of DSMC, Silicon Graphics, and Netscape who,
together with Real Networks, brings us the PKD website.
Seemingly fewer corporate sponsors than I remember KD having about
10 years ago...but interesting about the corporate sponsorship...
By the way, it seems like PKD has only plastic bags... Why don't
we get a choice of paper or plastic, like out in the "real world"...
like we do with Coke and Pepsi. *sheepish grin* :-)
-Roy E. Grimm
...who's still debating in his mind about the whole Coke vs. Pepsi
issue...and who's wondering why parks don't sell a selection
of Mountain Dew, Cherry Coke, Mountain Dew, 7Up, Diet Coke,
and Mountain Dew...probably because I'd stand there holding
up the line, unable to decide among my favorite beverages...
:-)
Anyway, this does not have much to do with coasters, but if we are gonna have
a soft drink discussion, well let's do it up right!
but I have been to at least one restuarant that sells both Coke and Pepsi.
For a long time, the two brands were sold out of totally different fountains,
located on opposite ends of the dining room. (One host station had Pepsi,
the other Coke, yet both were listed on the menu) Well you can guess what
happenned, the people who got seated in the Pepsi section, would want Coke,
and vice versa. This casued the servers to have to do a lot of cross-dining
room trips. (Heck get a group in there and order the 'opposite' soft drink
on purpose.....)
Anyway, they just remodeled the restaurant, and now both host stations have
both Coke and Pepsi *IN THE SAME FOUNTAIN* Each side has an 8 flavor
fountain, one side has Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite, Root Beer (Barqs), the other
has Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Mt. Dew, Dr. Pepper. The ice dispenser is of course,
in the middle.
It is one of the few times I have seen cross brands in the same fountain.
(A lot of the convenience stores around here have Super Thirst fountains with
16 flavors, 8 for each major brand, but on close look they are two seperate
machines side by side, with a fancy facade.)
Another place, that has the hand held soda guns (popular in bars and trendy
restaurants), has one with the buttons labeled "C", "S", "D",etc. But they
are a Pepsi place. The initials would match perfectly for Coke, so maybe
they changed over....
Let's see how much more can I say about soft drinks.....
Oh, I have seen both brands mixed in vending machines, but usually only when
they are being run by a vending company, or a private individual. (And have
the "Cold Drinks" front on them. Recently, I have seen Coke in a Pepsi
vending machine. The button says "Pepsi" but it dispenses Coke. It is
dubbed the 'black-market-machine' in a Pepsi place.

Cost. The Magic Kingdom used to sell both Coke and Pepsi (back before there was an
EPCOT). But even the mouse had to give into the savings of an exclusive contract.
By having a location sign an exclusive contract Coke or Pepsi will offer the
product and services for substantially less. These contracts are usually long
term, and include servicing the equipment, and often several other perks.

Around here where I live, I constantly see places that server all Coke

Uh-oh, Matt! *Now* you've gone and done it! :-)
Just wait till Dave Althoff sees *this* one! Now, tell me again,
Dave, what *was* that cola they served you on the Night of the Service
From Hell at TGI Friday's in Sandusky (Friday, 26 June 1998)? Coke or
Pepsi... or none of the above? :-)
In addition to the Great (Not!) Coke Debate, we experienced:
-- "Let's bring all service from the kitchen to a screeching halt
because our computers are down." (Dave and Joe S. offered to go back
and *fix* them, but they didn't take 'em up on the offer.)
-- The waitress who (at first) refused to bring Dooley and me
Guinness, because, "We only have that at the *downstairs* bar, and I
get my beverages from the bar up *here*." Um... it's the SAME
restaurant! (Since no food was coming out of the kitchen, and, at 11
pm the restaurant wasn't really crowded, she certainly wasn't
overworked *serving* food to anybody!)
-- The Look of Horror and Amazement on Joe's face when a server
dropped a bowl of sour cream at the exit from the kitchen. Six
employees stared at the "catastrophe" and decided to solve the problem
by throwing a towel over the mess rather than cleaning it up.
-- The Mine Car Buddy death stares. He was p.o.'ed and ravenously
hungry, and couldn't understand why we were sitting there waiting for
the food for an hour. Especially since he could see a McDonald's
through the window.
I'm amazed that we all managed to keep laughing. Well, everyone
except Buddy, who calmed down when we finally did get the food.
Dooley, MCB, Joe and I were staying in town, but I felt bad for Dave
who had a two hour drive back to Columbus. I don't think we got out
of there until after 1 am!
I'm a *huge* Friday's fan -- we practically live in them on the road

Dooley and I play NTN as a team. Our name is... ROAR! Ted, and

Heh, cool. I'm a mega TGIF fan myself! We have one like a mile or
two from our house and my family is always there. It's one of those
restaurants that you can't hold a grudge against after a bad incident.
You always go back! It's such a friendly place. The only bad time
I've had there was just a few weeks ago, in fact. My friends and I
decided to go there after our school game. So, we roll up to Friday's
at 10:00, and we didn't get our food until 11:30! I don't know what
happened that night. Anyway, I finish eating around 11:50. My
friends weren't even close to finished, so I gave them my share of the
bill, and headed out. Then the fun part, deciding which is worse --
breaking curfew or getting a ticket racing home trying NOT to break
curfew. :-) Well, that was the first time I found out that my
parents aren't really strict about curfew, luckily. It didn't matter
though, they were asleep when I got home.
Damn these provisionals! Only three months until I get them off.
(BTW, provisionals is a law in MD that says if you're under eighteen
with a license, you can't drive between midnight and 6am during your
first year. So, come, February, I can drive after midnight. Yee
haw!)

I'm someone who plays NTN trivia, just not with a name or an actual
game box. I usually sit in the restaurant (look for the "Horseshoe
Cafe" in the national rankings, well, OK, you probably won't see them
in the rankings) in view of the trivia monitor (well, it's either that
or the Keno monitors, and my dining partners get mad if I keep
chanting "eight ... eight ... eight ... eight ... woo hoo!" at the
Keno drawings) and answer the trivia questions. One of these days I'm
gonna actually PLAY the durned thing instead of just from an, erm,
armchair.

I just play under the name "Theo". I come in 1-4 usually amongst the
locals, we have some good players. When we go and eat now; Debi,
Marge and myself plays as team and we have fun as a team and
usually do very well.
I wonder if those numbers are a regional thing. The grocery store I go to
has a bigger display of Coke on the shelves than Pepsi, which may be that
they sell more Coke, or Coke gave them some perks in exchange for shelf
space. If these numbers hold true nationwide, it's amazing how off my
taste is from the rest of the population. I much prefer Coke, and if Coke
is unavailable will drink RC, Fanta Cola, President's Choice Cola, and
almost any other cola drink over Pepsi.

Well, it's not about coasters, but here's a brief description from the
NTN web site (http://www.ntn.com):
"The NTN Network offers consumers at bars, restaurants and hotels the
opportunity to compete with each other, via satellite, in live trivia
and sports-related game shows. NTN introduced its first interactive
game, NFL-licensed QB1*, during the 1984 Super Bowl. Played in
realtime in conjunction with NFL and collegiate football broadcasts,
QB1 challenges players across the country to predict which play the
offense will run just prior to the snap of the ball. Today, the NTN
Network offers more than 30 popular interactive games ranging from
Countdown *and Trivial Pursuit* Live to Sports IQ* and Playback*.
The NTN Network distributes its interactive sports and trivia games to
over 15 million consumers per month through U.S. venues. Last year,
participants played more than 47 million multi-player games, with a
total of 200 million viewer/participants."
As Ted mentioned earlier in this thread, AOL offers an online version.

Interestingly, the situation seems to be the opposite in the
Boston-area. Almost every restaurant I've ever worked in sells Pepsi,
though I'm not sure why. (Now, I'll have to ask the managers!) But
almost everyone orders Coke. Admittedly, coke has become a generic name
for cola. But I always warn people that we sell Pepsi, which gets
people asking for a different drink much more often than you'd think --
several times per day. And far more give a bit of a look or make a mild
comment, but go with Pepsi anyways. On the rare occasions where I've
worked in a restaurant offering Coke, I don't recall anyone ever
refusing the product.
However, the vast majority of people don't seem to care which cola
product we sell. They may ask for Coke generically, but they'll drink
anything when they're thirsty.
And I think that that's what those major marketing campaigns with
amusement parks (trying desperately to bring this back on topic!), fast
food chains, restaurants, movie theater chains, sporting arenas, etc.
are all about: getting people used to drinking their product on a
regular basis. Apparently, that's worth giving amusement parks lots of
free advertising.

You wouldn't believe how much restaurants come to depend on computers
and how much their going down can send almost everything to a screeching
halt. And you should see the lines at the calculators when the staff
realizes that they've forgotten remedial math. (Personally, I can do
the math myself, even the tax (though 5% is an easy figure).
Ironically, I'm the only one with a calculator watch, though I don't
need it then.)
Luckily, the restaurant I'm at now seems to have a pretty stable
computer system. It's only gone down about 4-5 times in the 16 months
I've worked there, and never for more than a half hour. I think I've
only actually had to drop 2 hand-written checks, though I'd prepared a
few more. At other restaurants I've worked at, the computers have gone
down several times per WEEK, often for hours at a time!

You pain in the @$$ customers sending her downstairs! ;-)
I wonder if the reason she couldn't get it for you is that it might not
even be programmed into her computer's terminal, since she's not
supposed to serve it?

You'd be amazed at how often stuff like that happens, particularly in
the back where customers can't see it. One time a friend and I were
both bending down to pick up the same take-out lid (which had been
sitting on the floor for over an hour.) We laughed and decided to do an
experiment. Since one side was paper, we wrote "Hi, I've been sitting
here since before 4PM" on it, then lay it with that side down where it
had been. It was just around the turn at the bottom of the stairs to
the kitchen. Virtually every time anyone picked up anything from or
brought anything to the kitchen, they'd step on or over this lid. Every
time we saw each other in the kitchen, we looked at it and laughed. It
was finally picked up some time in the 9 O'Clock hour!

I've had two similar experiences waiting forever at Boston's TGIFridays.
I haven't been back. Then again, I was never much of a fan. It's
always just been either the first ok place to eat we saw or the only
place open late.
And don't you just hate it when you have to wait forever to ride a
coaster? (another feeble attempt at staying even remotely on-topic.)
