Knott's seems like a weird place to put it, but I'm not complaining!
Why would Knott's replace the Screamin' Swing with that antique?
Derek
> Why would Knott's replace the Screamin' Swing with that antique?
Their Screamin' Swing is a small, four seater. Maybe they'll get a
full size version in the future.
Ken
Knotts didn't pay dick for the Screamin' Swing -- it was a bone that
S&S threw to Knotts after the wind shear issue with the slingshot at
CP and the subsequent removal at Knotts.
And, more importantly, the upcharge Swing barely broke even with the
labor costs.
I'll be glad if this is actually realized as I *love* the first gen
Intamin FF's! I don't understand it -- you can't really market it, and
they don't need that kind of attraction at the park with SS, and its
capacity isn't that great, but, it sure beats the shit out of nothing!
/m
On one hand, you might say Michigan's Adventure would be the ideal
home for DD, what with the park lacking any kind of adult drop or shot
tower ride. But then again, there is a bit more than meets the eye
here, as I'm sure CF knows the Southern California market will embrace
this type of attraction, after having one of the two Giovanola
Freefall prototypes in operation up the road in Valencia through 2007.
I'm with you here, Mike- a bit of a tough attraction to market
directly in the clustered Southern California theme park market, but
surely an entity that will be welcome at KBF.
The is the strangest news I have read in a LONG time.
Maybe they just want to piss off their neighbors?
- Ted
I'm still trying to picture its position on that plot of land and the
name of it (technically it's in Ghost Town, but so was Screamin' Swing
and that didn't have a western theme).
Rik
> The is the strangest news I have read in a LONG time.
Stranger than the news of Six Flags sending an SLC to La Ronde when
the park already has a B&M inverted?
Screamin' Swing: Seats 4, cycle time about five minutes, THC about 48 PPH,
operates with a $10 upcharge and is so popular that it can't recover its
own personnel costs.
Demon Drop: Seats 4 per cycle, dispatch interval about 30 seconds, THC
about 960 PPH, and to Knott's, it's a new ride.
And someone pointed out on another forum that by setting it right next to
the Calico Mine Ride, it will look like it belongs on that mountain in all
the ways that the Screamin' Swing doesn't.
Actually, the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Cedar Point
has been trying to unload the ride for years, and while they don't get the
cash they were hoping for, it gives Knott's a "new" attraction that might
actually be reasonably well received in the short term. It's entirely
unlike anything else in the neighborhood, since SFMM imploded their
Freefall.

If they wanted to do that, they would have bought the Waikiki Wave
("Quake") from Kentucky Kingdom. My understanding is that on the rare
days that thing actually operated, the neighbors complained about the
noise*.

*Not really. But to get the joke you have to know...SFKK is next
door to the Louisville Airport.

According to the article linked below, Knotts is keeping the name and
paint scheme. So much for hoping they would actually spend some money
to give it a western makeover....UGH!

Most of Michigan would have ridden it at Cedar Point.

It themes as a mine ride fairly trivially.
I guess you could say the same for Firehawk/X-Flight and Ohio?
Maybe they can save some additional money by reworking those old CP ads for
Demon Drop... ;)

Six Flags over Texas imploded their Freefall, but I don't believe SFMM
did, as part of Riddler's Revenge track passed over it. I don't think
even C.D.I. could have pulled that one off.

Less so, really. Detroit visited CP pretty heavily, but didn't get to SFWoA
nearly as much.
I grew up south of Detroit. I've been to CP maybe 20 times. I went to
Geauga/SeaWorld/SFO/SFWoA once.
I was hoping this was a 2nd gen Freefall when I heard the
announcement.
Rik
I was referring to say, a family in Columbus, OH who during the period
of 2001-2007 visited SFWoA/Geauga Lake and PKI/KI about an equal
amount of times. Having Firehawk marketed as the big new attraction
at KI in 2007 had to have been somewhat of an obvious one there for
the GP. Just for the novelty of riding position, actually.
Granted, X-Flight only ran at Geauga for about half a decade and Demon
Drop has been CP's front gate icon for over 25 years.
Ah, but as the historical attendance data for Geauga Lake (whatever name it
had at any given time...) should indicate, while most of Michigan has
visited Cedar Point (along with most of Ohio and Pennsylvania) I don't
think you can assume that most of Ohio ever visited Geauga Lake. I've
lived in Columbus all my life, and while everybody here has at least heard
of both Kings Island and Cedar Point, any reference to Geauga Lake is
usually met with a blank stare; Six Flags Ohio or Worlds of Adventure met
with an even blanker stare.
Oddly enough, those same clueless people have probably at one time or
another visited Sea World. Go figure.

(psstCF, YOUR PARK IN MICHIGAN HAS NO DROP RIDEpsst)
Word is that the mini-Screamin' Swing will stay at Knotts, and thus
not go to CGA.
I think the moral of this story is: If a rumor involves CGA getting
something, it's not true.
They've already got an S&S tower, the Dominator
Think we can safely dismiss that rumour

Not sure I follow your logic. The ride comes from Cedar Point, a park
that through this year operated both an S&S Tower and Demon Drop. And
Knotts, where the ride is/was scheduled to go also has an S&S tower.
So if the decision to bring Demon Drop to Knotts is nixed and the ride
ends up at another CF park why would the fact that Dorney operates an
S&S tower disqualify them?

It wouldn't surprise me if it went to Dorney. They ought to put
something more interesting than a stage where Laser used to be.

My thinking is the reason "why" CP is getting rid of it in the first
place is they already do have the more modern / better S&S drop ride.
They continued to run both, because they had both. (cheaper ta
keeper )
I wasn't aware that Knott's had an S&S <dumb east coaster>, but that
"explains" why the DD is not going there as well, according to my
thinking.
I mean to explain my thinking to the basic level. Why would CF put
an outdated, land consuming <compared to most other drop rides> ride,
in a park that already has a "better" drop ride. (and by better I'm
talking in the maintenance issues as well )
I don't really know the CF chain well enough to know where I'd guess
that DD goes, but IMHO I'd be surprised if the park already had a
"better" drop ride
Coastin Steve

Not true. Michigan's Adventure had a ride that dropped.
