With our trips to the two finest zoological parks in Ohio taken care
of, we went to its best amusement park. Free entry for ex-military
meant that Jim (my mother’s fiance, mentioned in the last two TRs)
could enter for free and get a discount for her as well. At $18 a head
for them to get in, it wasn’t difficult to convince them to make the
trip over to the Point for a short visit before they began their trek
east to CT. Even with the hot temps, this was probably the best idea
we had.
After a somewhat lengthy breakfast at Bob Evans, we made our way up to
the park. My wife remarked that this is the first time she can ever
remember approaching it from the south. I’ve done this drive a few
times up US-23 and OH-4 and its changed quite a bit, with some
development having actually taken place over the last 5-6 years since
I last drove the route. We had a bunch of detours as well because of
running into multiple small town Memorial Day parades. One last delay
was the result of physical desires. Primacy was taken by my own
personal desire to go to the bathroom. This was fulfilled with a stop
at the most disgusting restroom I’ve ever used; the portable toilet
out in back of Meggit’s Farm Market/Shell Station. The second desire
came in the want to eat BBQ, provided by a trailer based BBQ
proprietor called Snooties BBQ located in the parking lot of the same
facility. Jim and I both got pulled pork sandwiches, which the cook
told us were his best sellers. It was pretty good, though I imagine
that the pulled beef or ribs might be even better. With those delays,
we got to the parking lot of Cedar Point one hour after opening.
Lines weren’t bad at all on this particular day; Monday of any holiday
weekend is typically quiet, and the hot temperatures kept people away
and more towards the dry park. The mix of attractions we went for
included few monster thrill rides and a lot of less intense
attractions. We found ourselves going round trip on the train,
visiting the skyride, enjoying a trip on Windseeker, and visiting the
Wave Swinger, to name a few. We also enjoyed watching one of the
shows (Summer Daze) to get out of the heat. There was some snacking
along the way as well; it looks like Superpretzel is getting phased
out for Bavarian pretzels for those nerdy enough to give a crap. I
also had cheese on a stick for the first time in awhile. It isn’t so
bad for being horrible for you. Also if you want to hear nerdy stuff,
bleachers are going up where Wildcat was facing Luminosity.
As far as the coasters, there were only two we rode. One was Mean
Streak, which we had heard lots about not being terribly rough. My mom
didn’t buy into this jargon at all and chose to skip it, leaving my
wife and I to go with Jim. We headed towards the back and chose a non-
axel, as was suggested, and we thought the ride wasn’t half bad. Not
necessarily half good; it only has one spot of airtime. But it didn’t
hurt or feel uncomfortable in the least. It is a very uneventful 160ft
ride. The other coaster was Millennium Force, which we waited roughly
20 minutes or so far, and was fully worth it, something all 4 of us
agreed on.
Again, it wasn’t a heavy duty day of riding, but they can’t all be,
and frankly it is silly to try and force it. There’s so many secondary
attractions that are fun to ride like Cedar Downs that attempting to
force credit whoring is silly. We had a great time and didn’t even go
down the Magnum midway. We all gave each other hugs and headed on our
separate ways. Cedar Fair is big into their new catchphrase “Thrills
Connect” and this validated it in a sort of mushy way.
