Why does Amtrak use what I assume are *airport* designators for
stations? Isn't that both stupid, as trains are supposed to compete
with airplanes, and misleading, as many cities have several airports,
none of which presumably are as conveniently located as the railway
station(s)?

The appearance to airport codes is merely coincidental. Amtrak has its own
system of three-letter codes. While some of these are the same as various
cities' airport codes, other are not. Amtrak's scheme tends to be more
mnemonic than the codes used by the airlines.
For example, Chicago-O'Hare airport is ORD; Amtrak's Chicago designation is
the more-logical CHI. New Orleans' airport is MSY; Amtrak uses NOL. My
home town of Champaign, Illinois is known to the airlines as CMI but to
Amtrak as CHM.

Convenience to the passenger? (And probably the assumption that there
is an airport in every town that still has a railroad station.)
And isn't a bit confusing to guess whether to use LPP, Lr or Lpr for
the same town (in this case, Lappeenranta, Finland)?

You have a valid question, but the answer makes sense (err, sorta).
It has to do with Travel agency Automations systems, Amtrak, and the huge
reservation computer systems that were under development at the time
Amtrak started. Both were going though a major overhaul, it was decided
to reduce confusion for Travel Agencies (which book though a res system
that "connects" to Amtraks computers. (For SABRE its **AMK)
Utilizing a single set of codes reduced confusion & obviously made
programmers much happier.
It hasn't become the standard that was envisioned, but for people who
travel its become a defacto-standard.

In the case of Balto., the trains do need some codes of their own. BWI has
a rail station served by Amtrak, but the principal Balto. station is Penn
station in the city.

The Sunset does terminate at New Orleans. NOL is probably short for the
local pronounciation, "Nollins." :)

I don't know where Amtrak came up with it's abreviations, but is it
possible that some were adopted from the roads over which Amtrak
opperates? Could it be that the RR's used LAX first?
Fortunately, VIA Rail does not use these codes. It has its own system
of 4-letter abbreviations. E.g. Halifax (HLFX), Truro (TRUR),
Moncton (MCTN), Saint John, New Brunswick (SJNB), Montreal (MTRL).
These are mainly for internal use, and would not normally be seen
by the travelling public. A passenger booked in a sleeping car on
the Chaleur going from St. Lambert to Gaspe would appear as SLAMGASP.

No.... that's a airline code. Amtrak has its own subset of codes,
but they had started out trying to use the airline systems codes.
Its now even more confusing.
Cities with several airports have an abbreviation for each individual
airport and one for the city in airline schedules/ticketing. Eg. New
York City (NYC): Kennedy (JFK), LaGuardia (LGA), Newark (EWR)...

VIA Rail Canada uses four-letter codes. For example, Toronto Union Station
is (I think) TRTO. Tickets show where the reservation was booked and where
the ticket was issued with the station name followed by RV or SV.
I think Reservia, VIA's reservation system, was written by Air Canada.
Air Canada was originally (in its Trans-Canada Airlines days) owned by
Canadian National Railways. The Air Canada credit card (now the En Route
card, recently sold to Diners Club, I think) used to be the Air Canada - CN
credit card.
Most of CN's non-rail activities have either been closed down, sold off
or taken over directly by the federal government or by new government-owned
companies ("crown corporations"). So the former CN Marine (ferry service
in Atlantic Canada) is now a separate company called Marine Atlantic, for
example.
Air Canada became a separate crown corporation several years before it was
privatized.
In any event, Canadian airport codes normally begin with the letter Y
(some begin with Z), and codes like YUL for Montreal-Dorval aren't
very mnemonic. (Besides, VIA has a Dorval station in addition to its
Montreal Central station, so which station would be YUL if VIA were to
use airline codes for its stations?)

No offence, but you have a lot to learn about Canada -- or more specifically,
our wonderful government. :-)
I just checked my copy of the VIA Rail National Timetable from last spring
(effictive April 26), it is printed like a magazine 8" by 10".
Its last numbered page is 46! And the numbering begins with the front
cover (the inside of the front cover is page 2!), so I guess counting the
inside and outside of the back cover, it is 48 pages.
Added to this, I can count only 24 pages with actual schedules on them,
most use the whole page, more or less. Of the 24, about a total of
three pages involve connecting services that are not VIA rail.
(Amtrak, Ontario Northland, and Algoma Central)
The rest of the timetable is additional information, rules and regulations,
seating diagrams, and pretty pictures.
Our wonderful government has really cut our service to the bone.
What's more, a recent royal commission has released its recommendations
regarding transportation in this country. They state that the time for
subsidized transportation is over and that a total pay-as-you-go system
should be moved towards.
Fine. But if this were to really happen:
1) All major highways would become toll.
2) All airports would have to be built and maintained
by airlines; existing ones would have to be purchased
by them. --> costs picked up by the traveller
3) Railway fares would also go up.
But, the most economical way to travel would be rail.
The problem is, knowing our government, they would just slash money
for the railways (CN and VIA are crown corporations and therefore are
subsidized).

The technology is certainly there, and the Ontario government is
rumoured to be looking into the on-the-fly toll system. I'd be horrified
if they went ahead with their current plan, though: billing you for your
road use at license renewal time (one year's worth of road tolls due on
your birthday: many happy returns, indeed!)

The feds just announced that Toronto Airport's remaining two government
run terminals are to be privatized. Can the airport itself be far behind?

Not necessarily ... If VIA were free to plan for serving only profitable
routes, it could probably manage on current fares. (I'm not suggesting
it will happen, but ...)

Insert the word "heavily" between "are" and "subsidized" in the last
sentence. Even CP Rail has had more than its fair share of government
help over the last century or so. Face it, Canadian railways would
be radically different organizations if the governments (at all levels)

Railways are stigmatized by several generations of bad press (much of it
deserved) and ham-fisted regulation. If the crown corporations were
set free tomorrow, they'd sink rapidly: they are not adapted to life in
the marketplace without government backing.
I'm all in favour of moving toward a free market in transportation, but
I've gotten very cynical over the last few years, and I don't expect
much change (at least, not positive change). I'd like to be proven wrong.

Neither would I, but in order to give an accurate description of just
how small the timetabling information is, it was necessary to point out.
The original poster had thought that the TT for an entire nation could
be almost 1" thick in pages -- this is not the case in Canada.

All other issues aside, can anyone reading this newsgroup honestly
state that they would be pleased with a government that did the following?
Get elected because of promises, one of which was to restore passenger
rail service cut by the previous government. After elected, they DID
come through with this promise, only to cut the same services, plus others
a couple of years later.

Absolutely true. The problem is, that any subsidization that the
railways receive is tangable in the eyes of the tax payer. ie, it is
a definate dollar figure that is part of a government budget.
The airlines, bus companies, and trucking companies do not receive any
such tangable dollar contribution (Canadian Airlines Int'l not counted
as they are only getting a "loan guaranty" which is not a cash subsidy
unless they go under -- a lot like student loans!). But dollar for
dollar, they receive *more* subsidies than the railways when one considers
that they don't have to maintain their right-of-ways, or their terminal
facilities, etc.
