A compact fluorescent light (CFL) on the ceiling burst and started a
fire in a home in Hornell, N.Y. December 23, 2010. "Those are the
lights everybody's been telling us to use," said Joe Gerych, Steuben
County Fire Inspector. "It blew up like a bomb. It spattered all
over."

I used to know a gal from Hornell,New York. That was back around December
1969 when I worked part time at a Krystal hamburger restaurant on Terry
Road.
Her New York accent, she pronounced box as bax.A Seargent (Seargent
Funk) in our 114th Aviation Company ammo supply unit at Tan Son Nhut was
from Mechanicsville,New York.
Everytime I stepped into that office to dial a phone number to let a
certain office know we had a load of ammo sitting on the Hard Stand, I
always had to say, WORKING!

That telephone in that office was for Official Business, ONLY!
Seargent Bates had told me before the first time I hauled a pallet load
(with a forklift) of ammo to that Hard Stand and when I step into that
office to Always say, WORKING! Then I would dial that phone number and
then I hop back on that forklift and get on back to our ammo dump.

The CFL Fraud -or- Misunderstanding ! :
What Is a Light Bulb's Average Service Use [ASU]
and a Light Bulb's Average Service Life [ASL] ?

1st the usual 4~6~8 Year 'claimed' Life of a CFL Bulb
is in the Up-Right {Base-Down} Position.
http://www.coejl.org/greensyn/CFL%20USDOE.gif

Oops - A CFL in the Base-Up Position : Cut the
Average Service Use [ASU] in Half !
-and- Oops Oops - A CFL in the Base-Up Position :
Often Reduces the Light Output by 10%~15% ?

2nd the usual 4~6~8 Year 'claimed' Life of a CFL Bulb
is for only a low average of 4-Hours Use per Day [HU/D]
4 X 365 = 1460 = One Years Average Service Use [OYASU]
6000 Hours Rated CFL Life = 4 OYASU
That's About 4-Years Average Service Use [ASU]

CFL's that are in 24/7 Service Use for 365 Days {1-Year}
Have Run for 8760 Hours which is roughly 6-Year ASU.
which is all used up in one year.

Had some 24/7 locations on a job where the old Long-Life
Incandescent Light Bulbs were on a 2-Month Replacement
Cycle {Usually Burned-Out} that required the Use of a Ladder.
* The new CFLs Averaged 1-Year before Burning Out
* Eliminated 5 of the 6 Annual Hours on that Ladder
{Saved 5 Hours of Labor}
* Used 1/4th the Electricity
* That was 4 Exit Signs Inside and 6 Outside-Lights
{3 for the Outside Front}
+ Up Graded the Inside Exit Signs to Red LEDs a few
years back; and have not replace them since. :o)

IMHO : All CFL Bulbs Should be Enclosed in Glass or
Plastic Envelopes for Environmental Safe Handling

Fluorescent is a great way to go ... however, the old fluorescent were
much more green ... first of all, you didn't replace (throw away) the
ballast every time you changed the bulb.

Should just have an adapter containing the ballast and just replace the
SHO fluorescent "curly Q" tube, tons of ballasts filling land fills is
completely senseless!

Back in the 1970s at a W.T.Grant department store that used to be on
Ellis Ave near Highway 80 I bought a Philips made in the Netherlands CFL
light bulb thingy. The bulb lasted over seventeen years before it finally
burned out.I still have it right here, it is on a shelf in one of my
bathroom cabinets now.If I could find a new bulb for it, I have no doubt
I could use it for a bunch of more years.

New construction uses permanent ballast CFLs. The medium Edison base CFL
lamps are a transitional deal.

The implementation of Fiscal Martial Law in Michigan and the raising
specter of such legislation’s enactment in Wisconsin make it clearer
than ever the true nature of the enemy. The Republican assault on our
democratic values, local governance and workers’ right to have a voice
in the work place can best be described as a fascist coup-d’état. In the
words of Mussolini, “fascism should more properly be called corporatism
because it is the merger of state and corporate power.” The Republicans’
bare-knuckle dedication to cutting taxes on corporations at the expense
of the deficit and the middle class exemplifies their loyalty to
corporate interests over those of every-day Americans. Perhaps more so
than any measure rolled out in recent months, Michigan Gov. Rick
Snyder’s implementation of Fiscal Martial Law legislation leaves no room
for ambiguity in the Republican gameplan.

I can see what the problem is now. We are all talking about CFL's to
light your house, yard, business with ... SD (Special Dave) is talking
about MARIJUANA GROW LIGHTS!

I just think he needs more wattage ... tokin' all the dope has his
basement so smoked up he can't see the keyboard and screen and keeps
typing gibberish ... maybe a fan to move the smoke outdoors would work.
But then, the whole neighborhood would probably end up being stoned!

Bongster dave might consider getting a new hobby ...

I am going to look around and see what is available to replace my
existing fixtures with which has a permanent ballast with just
replaceable bulbs. Maybe it is available here and I have just missed 'em!

Presently you need an 11 Watt LED Light Bulb
to Replace a 100 Watt Rated Incandescent Bulb
-but- I has to be Shaped and Configured to provide
All-A-Round Light like the old A19 Bulbs did

-or- You Need an 7 Watt LED Light Bulb to Replace
a 65 Watt Rated Incandescent PAR-30 Bulb
-easy-to- Be Shaped and Configured to provide
The 60*~90* Spot Light like the PAR-30 Bulbs do
.
For the next 3~5 Years CFL's are the better Energy
Use and more Cost Effective 'replacement' for older
Incandescent Light Bulbs. - imho ~ RHF

Yes, the fine Republican Governor Snyder of Michigan that Lare helped
vote into office turned out to be a closet DICTATOR, throwing out of
office the duly and freely elected city officials of Benton Harbor,
going against the *core values* of this country.

The only "justice" that may come out of this is when Snyder starts
taxing Lare's pension (assuming Lare gets one) and Ryan guts Medicaid,
Medicare and Social Security that Lare may be on.

Possibly that will give him a little "buyer's regret".

Excellent advice for public service workers protected by unions,
longshoremen still with a strong union, excellent wages, adequate
benefits and retirement, for small business owners (a disappearing
breed), people like me who worked union and had my own small business
(transferring it to family now I am retired), etc. but not so good for
the 18%+ who are unemployed in my area. They are not unemployed because
they want to be, but simply because their jobs are in china, india,
indonesia, etc.

Working two jobs has always meant putting together full employment for
yourself, even if it takes two jobs, until you have a ~40-48 hr. work
week. Now, the slave masters have stepped in and they are expecting
people to work 80 hr work weeks! Insanity! I only did this when it was
my own business, my boss was myself, I had complete control over my
working conditions, I chose the people to help me (employees), my hours,
breaks, etc., and I got all the profits from my intensive labors. I
have to admit, I would have NEVER done that for two minimum wage jobs
... one of my neighbors is doing that, it is hard to watch ... a year
and a half of watching him and I can't see him getting ahead at all, he
fears being laid off one job as I write this. I think what he has been
though would have killed most men.

If you have a problem, and you apply a fix --- and you still have the
problem, so you reapply the fix ... at some point, it becomes obvious,
the problem is the fix and NOT the problem!

We will know, almost immediately, when the right things start being done
... from that point on, things will only get better ... that stands in
stark comparison to conditions now ...

Bravo! EXCELLENT advice (not sure about the two jobs, though...a sad
commentary on life today). However, please don't lose sight of the main
topic of this thread; i.e. Snyder the dictator.

Yeah, even in Kokomo some might call Benton Harbor a "bad neighborhood".
However, that does not justify a dictator. For criminal wrong doing, we
have the criminal justice system (it works -- your (former) Detroit
mayor is in the pen) and if the citizens don't like the politics, they
have the recall process (like the mayor of Miami that was recalled a
couple of months ago). Two procedures that are in place and work,
dictators need not apply.

But like Brenda said, what Snyder did was dictatorial and goes against
everything this country stands for. Sure, Mussolini made the trains run
on time, but...do we really want a dictator?

Yes, we just differ on how they should "jump in". I favor the criminal
justice system or the recall process, as appropriate. You favor,
literally, a dictator. Your attitude makes it a little bit clearer how
dictators get in power, by people looking for quick answers.
Unfortunately, IMHO your 'solution', in this country, goes against the

I bet, if you drive taxi, one of those is deductible on your tax return!

I can imagine an ad for bullet proof vests. Ad shows a taxi driver in a
fierce gun battle with two thugs. Thugs end up bleeding and dying on
the ground, plenty of blood running on the sidewalk ... taxi driver
steps up from behind the cab, bullet proof vest has a few lead slugs
hanging, dropping off ... driver has a big smile showing shark-like

In this day and age, with the interest and criminal fees, charges, fines
on credit cards, everyone is cutting them up and attempting to crawl out
from under thousands of dollars of debit ...

I think that would pretty well limit the number of taxis which could
make a go of it ... in NYC that just might work ... still, I think a big
portion of their business probably comes from people who have lost all
their credit cards ...

I know a lot of credit checks I am running on potential renters/lessees

Well, actually, I don't know -- because I don't know where "here" is.
Furthermore, in many big city metropolitan areas, they are LAYING OFF

services and reducing city staffs, either by layoffs or attrition.
Please try and take a wider view, rather than your local "here".

From every one of your over-abundance of posts here, it is clear that
you think you are a legend in your own mind, a "know-it-all", even
though it's abundantly clear that you don't.

Well, thanks for that!

However, this is a NG. I do it for fun. My posts of spur of the
minute, off the top of my head, express real thoughts and beliefs and
facts and truths as I realize them to be. I don't spend much time on
them as they are just a "hobby."

If it appears I put that much effort into them, great! But, even a
letter to the editor, or an email/letter to my congressman/senator --
state or federal, gets much more thought!

I don't belittle nor minimize the unemployment problem(s.) Unemployment
it at 18%+, admitted (probably notable higher in reality.)

But, it mainly affects older workers, less educated workers, etc. I am
semi-retired and only have minimal duties in my own business ... I am
working towards full retirement, but have to shut myself down in an
orderly manner for best tax effects and the effects of other assuming
the business assets ... so, I probably am not as sharp on all this and
the new changes happening as those having a more active role ...

Hey, chill dude!

JS

That Stripes movie with Bill Murray, he is a cab driver in NYC and the
passenger, instead of paying for the ride, he jumps out and starts
running like hell.

At my age, the cabbie would have to be pretty old for that method to
work for me!

I guess I could carry a cane and hit him with it, just before I start
walking, at a fast rate!, and getting away!
