hi,
Anyone have recommendations on a good medium wave receiver? I have
a CCPlus that has a LED display that is shot. When it worked well it
was good.
Thank you,
Mike McM.

The CC+ and Sony 2010 are about at tie at the top when it comes to portable
MW performance. The GE Superadio 2 is also a good one but analog only. The
Superadio 3 is not quite as good as the two and quality varies from unit to
unit. The CC radio with shortwave included is also a good MW performer
since it has the dual ferrite antenna built into it.

One of my current favorites is the Tecsun R-333 which you can only buy out
of China and the controls are all in Chinese although they are pretty easy
to figure out. It is digital and does an nice job on MW.

I use the ICOM R75 and the Drake R8B. No mediumwave penetrates my
stucco so I need a 50 Ohm antenna jack.

I saw the patent for that duall loop that the CC+ uses. It appears to be
similar in design to the balanced loops that Palomar, Quantun, and the new
Palstar unit are using. The difference is that instead of using a balanced
RF amplifier, a balun is used to give an unbalanced output of of the
loopstick antenna. This approach shares the benefit of deep nulls because of
the balanced design, but since a balanced differential RF amplifier is not
being used, you wouldn't have the common mode rejection that the others
have.
This would manifest itself with degraded rejection of flourescent light
interference, etc. Still, a novel approach to get a "cheap and easy"
balanced antenna design. Not a bad radio. If you want to spend a bit more,
the Palstar R30, Drake R8 series, Icom R75, Yaesu FRG-100, and others of
this type are good bets
For a portable unit, nothing beats the early Grundig Satellit receivers for
MW reception. The 3400 was the last Satellit that used the old variometer
design and the older circuit topology. Later units, such as the Satellit 600
and 650, although quite sensitive, were Philips designs, and they didn't
have the dynamic range of the earlier units. These newer units used a
Gilbert Cell mixer, similar to a 1496. Not bad, but not the best. The
Satellit 700 series, although they have a cult following, aren't as
sensitive as the older units.
Good bets are the Satellit 210, Satellit 1000, 2000, 3000, and 3400. The
3400 is my favorite, since it uses a monolithic crystal filter at the 2MHz
1st I.F. This gives the 2nd mixer good protection from close in IMD. 600MHz
Ft transistors are used as the RF amplifiers on all ranges with the 3400,
although many people prefer the Satellit 210 with its wood enclosure.
