The Power of the Right Shortwave Listening (SWL) Antenna
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Shortwave-SWL-Antenna/message/13917
Listening to WWV & WWVH on 5000 kHz @ 12:00 UTC
.
OK so I Tuned down to 5000 kHz to catch a WWV Time Check.
.
To my suprise the S-Meter read a Solid "9" S-Units
with a Constant Noise Roaring from the Speaker
with just a whisper of the WWV Tones being heard.
.
Now My Location is very Urban in the middle of the
Flat-Lands {Bad-Lands} of OK-Land, Cali-4-Ni-A, USofA
- - - So you know we get more than our share of
Man-Made-Noise here.
Metro-Area : SF Bay Area @ Zip Code 94606
Geographic Region : Northern California
World : West Coast of the USA (North America)
Global : 122*W24' Longitude by 37*N78' Latitude
.
My Radio/Receiver : Icom IC-R75 (R-75) with Kiwa Mods
Using an external RCA 4" Full Range Mini-Speaker [5" Cube]
.
My normal Shortwave Listening (SWL) Antenna is a
45 Foot long Low Noise Inverted "L" Antenna
- - - a la John Doty
Laid-Out : East (Bottom Tip) to West (Far End)
15 Foot Vertical-Up-Leg with a 30 Foot Horizontal-Out-Arm
Wire Antenna Element = 50 Strands of #41 Litz Wire = 20 AWG
TV 'type' 300 Ohm to 75 Ohm Matching Transformer
RG6 Coax Cable Feed-in-Line about 25 Feet Long
* This is usually a very 'quiet' SWL Antenna with
Good Signal Levels and very Low Noise.
* However, this was not the situation here and now.
* Again the S-Meter read a Solid "9" S-Units with
a Constant Noise Roaring from the Speaker with
just a whisper of the WWV Tones being heard.
.
So I switched over to another of my Shortwave Listening
(SWL) Antennas a 13 Foot Round RG8 Coax Cable Loop
Antenna not using Radio's Pre-Amps "Off". The Loop
Antenna Element is located in side the Radio Shack
on the Wall with 5 Foot Feed-in-Line to the Radio.
.
* First the Constant Noise Roaring from the Speaker
was gone.
.
* Second the S-Meter read 1~3 S-Units and the
Tone and Voice Sound were Crisp and Clear with
Very Good Strong Audio.
* Plus I could hear both WWV and WWVH equally well.
.
IF - You are in a Noisy Urban Area and especially
IF - You Live in an Apartment or are Condo Owner
THEN - Consider Building and Using a Coax Cable
Loop Antenna made from RG8 Size Coax Cable.
NOTE - If you have a Radio/Receiver that has a
built-in Pre-Amp they work even better or use one
with a Tune-Able Pre-Selector like an MFJ-1020
Indoor Active Antenna {Pre-Selector}

OK - So this morning the big {local} noise source
went away and suddenly . . .

WWV and WWVH were both a Solid S-4 with Good Audio
using the 13 Foot Round RG8 Coax Cable Loop Antenna
and not using Radio's Pre-Amps "Off".

But now both WWV and WWVH were S-9 to S9+10dB
with Very Good Audio using my normal Shortwave Listening
