Part of standard time in the U.S. started with the single track (with
some passing track) railroads. With one track for two directions you
had better be at Princeton Junction, NJ at the right time and none of
this nonsense about Hoboken being 3 1/2 minutes ahead of Trenton.

In Israel, DST/Summer Time is a struggle between the secular who want
to conserve fuel with more days of summer time and the religious who
feel that summer time promotes the desecration of the Sabbath. The
Sabbath ends past sunset on Saturday so if it's still light when you
go dancing or to the movies on Saturday night you're desecrating the
Sabbath.
In Israel, there are no parliamentary districts. You vote for a party
slate and a party which gets twice as many votes as another gets to
name twice as many members from their list.
This "proportional representation" means that small religious parties
which would get shut out in the first-past-the-post district system
get enough votes so that they have to be brought into the ruling
coalition and some of their agenda passed.
I understand that the EST zone in Indiana went on "double daylight" as
the opponents call EDT - they say that EST is ALREADY DST when you get
as far west as Indianapolis - in 2006, despite rural opposition.
On the other hand, the farmers in Queensland, Australia won their
struggle against summer time this year and there was some movement by
people on the "Gold Coast" to have their own little summer time zone,
perhaps so the tourists up from Sydney and Melbourne who aren't
working on their skin cancers fast enough wouldn't have to turn their
watches back.
