Fix for CCRadio displaying broken numbers

[Bob Miller]

I have a Sangean/C.Crane CCRadio, a few years old. The display screen
shows only bits and pieces of numbers and letters. Any known, easy fix
I could do?

I contacted the C.Crane company, and they want $49.95 just to have
their repair guy look at it, plus shipping both ways. Might as well
get a new one, as do that -- so, looking for a home fix.

That Sangean CCRadio is just like the one I bought about eight years ago
from ccrane.It did NOT pick up any radio stations any better than my
other old radios.I tried it out for one week and I sent thay wayyyyyy
over priced piece of plastic JUNK back.Then I bought a Sangean ATS 909
Shortwave radio and I tried it for a week too.HUMP!,that radio didn't
show me dip s..t!,I sent that wayyyyyy over priced piece of plastic JUNK
back too.How does ccrane get away with it,RIPPING so many people OFF
(post a complaint about ccrane and Sangean at www.ripoffreport.com) like
that all the time? And those two Kooks,Art Bell and George Noory are
still touting that RIPP OFF artist ccrane company and those RIPP OFF
Sangean radios.Buy a Sangean radio from crane and expect to send it back
to ccrane in a year or two for digital front panel repair/replacement
and be prepared to pay at least about $50.00 plus shipping and handling
charges too,,,, What A RIPP OFF! I wonder if Art Bell and George Noory
are getting any kickbacks from ccrane repairing those Sangean radios?

Long range AM? A good tube type radio or a car radio from about the
1970's on back.

You won't find any new modern day radios at any price nowdays that are
much ado about picking up long range AM radio stations.Some of those
little cheap hand held radios are just as good as the expensive AM
radios at picking up long range AM radio stations.The most important
thing is,Antenna Antenna Antenna no matter how expensive or inexpensive
the radios are.

Or pick up a GE Superradio for $65 . Analog read out, saves batteries
not as accurate as digital tuning. Sounds good works well.

I have a GE radio around here somewhere that is suppose to be good at
picking up long distance AM stations and the radio works too,it isn't a
GE Super radio though and it is sitting on the floor among a bunch of
other old radios behind my old antique pump organ, (no puns,please,I
don't go that route) that I use for my tv stand that my tv set that is
hooked up to my webtv set top box and my other tv set that is hooked up
to my DirectTV set top box.(Three Stooges is on Spike tv now) I might
get around one of these days and digging that GE radio out and looking
at what model of a model that GE long distance radio is.My best long
distance transistor radio is my old Sears Travler AM/FM/Shortwave
Radio,but the on/off/volume contol and them mechanical push button
thingys on top of the radio are worn out,they was worn out when I bought
the radio at a Goodwill store about nine years ago.I can get the radio
to working if I keep messing around with the controls long enough,but
it's kind of like fighting a loseing Battle.

If you go looking for a GE Super Radio,see if you can find one of the
first model GE Super Radios.They are much better than the later model GE
Super Radios,according to reports I have read about them on the internet
about five years ago.

Let me get over there behind my old antique pump organ (no puns,please)
that I use for a stand for my two tv sets and reach around back there
where I have my old GE so-called long distance radio stashed on the
floor with about a dozen of my other old radios,I hope y'all appreciate
me doing all of this,hang on a minute,,,,,,, Ok,it's a GE model number
7-2880E and on the front of the radio it says,General Electric and on
the dial it says,Long Range High Selevtivity and also on the back of the
radio it says,Made In Hong Kong and there are three screws for FM and
GND and AM antenna.The radio works ok,just as good as new,nothing to
jump for joy about and shout it from the rooftops though,but almost all
of the chrome looking paint is gone because I used to take it to work
with me when I worked at the auto/truck/lawnmower battery factory and
that battery acid played heck on the radio.

I've got a 7-2880B (first edition) in next to new condition for sale if
anyone's interested. These radios are great on the AM and FM bands. 6 "D"
cells to run it or AC with the original cord that came with it. I actually
have two but it's time to trim the excess. Have scanned jpgs of same.

The fix is easy for persons experienced with printed circuit work. The
problem is a cold solder joint for the clock oscilator. I consider this
a factory defect, and don't understand why CCrane or Sangean don't
warranty their work even after several years.

a good result:

I took the back off. then unscrewed the first circuit board and layed it back, you have to unhook one cable. then I realized I didn't know what I was doing so decided to put it back together. But first I gave the lower circuit board a good dose of canned air. Screwed it all back together and guess what, my display is back as good as new!!

Yeah, that's how I got my Jeep started. Removed the air cleaner -
except it's not an air cleaner, just something that looks like
one and sits over the throttle/throttle body. Then put it back
on after it started.

'Course it might just have been that it warmed up enough after
sitting through a frigid February that whatever was gunked up had
started moving again.

In your case, of couse, the first thing you might assume is that
reseating the cable did it. Sure, the canned air might have, I
suppose, if something conductive had gotten inside. But you might
have heard something rattling around in that case, and a good
whack might have changed the symptoms - or cleared them up -
without even opening it up.

If it was neither of these you might expect the problem to come
back. Bad connection due to broken wire or cold solder joint?

It appears that many of us have that problem. I bought a new C Crane radio because they are so good and after 3 or 4 years the digital dial is still working as designed. Perhaps they are using new technology or a new parts manufacturer. I just use my original on the preset buttons for ball games and other programs i listen to at times.

Saw a Youtube video which shows someone using a hair dryer and pencil eraser to better conect the digital electrical tape to lcd display. This did not work well and eventually reverted back to its broken display. Yesterday I used a soldering iron tip to superheat each black conections on the tape. Most of the dosplat is working now and I didn't evev risk melting the simiconductor chip its attached to. There is an area that was not changed due to a gob of hot glue keeping me from accesing the black electrical connectors and apply the heat from the solder iron. Hope this works!

This procedure worked for me. I applied heat with a heat gun and rubbed the taped connection with the hard plastic end of a small screw driver to better adhere taped material to the circuit board. LCD displayed perfectly after! Yes be careful of applying too much heat to other areas

I had 3-c crane radios that had the lcd panel go bad.sent the first one back for a one time only free fix.threw another one out.just picked one up at a estate sale $1.50 half off day the lcd panel was going out on it (cc radio plus).found out if you take the back cover off and the circuit board off you will see the lcd ribbon.get a pencil with eraser and a hair dryer as you direct the heat onto the ribbon take the eraser and press down on the ribbon board.It was very easy to take the back off and circuit board off.total time involved was less then 15 min. After doing this and plugging radio in the lcd was as new with no glitches or missing digits in the lcd display.again it was a quick and easy fix and it worked.also agree that c crane knew of this issue with lcd display and should of had sangean fix this problem as this radio is very expensive.try this before you toss your unit into the trash you will be surprised how easy the fix is.

I owned three of the C Crane radios and enjoyed the good reception. This is back before podcasts etc.... Anyway, all three failed. I emailed the Crane company and got the same issue from them, send us money and we'll let you know if we can fix it. NEVER AGAIN. Go with something else, the customer service absolutely sucks. Now I have Grundig, Eton, Tecsun, Sangean....all still cruising along just fine. Too bad C Crane wouldn't help. I want them to succeed, but you've got to take care of your customers.

Once upon a time I made the mistake of buying a horribly overpriced C Crane radio, and suffered the failed LCD, supposedly it's caused by water vapor damage to the display.

My solution was to purchase a Sangean PR-D7. The price was about 1/3rd of the cost of the C Crane radio and mine has been working perfectly for 11+ years; I listen about 1-2h per day and on weekends. Best of all it recharges all 6 AA batteries and is not a pig using D-cells; the reception is really excellent in this radio.

This is also a good point; because the display failure is caused by water vapor, do not locate your radio somewhere high in the kitchen (our C Crane failed atop the refrigerator where it lived). And if you have a failed display, you may be able to remove just the display and put it into a bed of rice or with silca gel packs for a few days to suck the water vapor out of the display. Good luck!
