FINALLY, after years of putting it off, I spent a beautiful Sunday
morning/afternoon redoing my antenna and where they enter my abode. Good
news number one, after a little over two years, the coax feedline from my
A/D sloper didn't have to be replaced but I did add a run of PVC to encase
it. It was buried and looked fine so I just snaked it back through the PVC.
:-)

I added on a length of mast to my Alpha Delta, I now have really no idea
how high it is, but boy, it really looks ominous up that high...lol....I
plan on in the future, adding another brother up there for him. I redid
all my guy wires, that was an experiece, but it looks like something out
of a Pop Comm magazine now.

I have an Antron that is well from bottom to tip at the 90ft. range. I have
another section of mast that would increase it by roughly another 30 ft.
That too, was secured by brand new guy wires.

*All grounds for the antennas were checked, the one on the A/D looked like
it was installed yesterday. I added another fresh run of some real good
ground wire to give it many of years of great service. In inspecting the
traps, I was amazed to see that they really haven't aged much and
everything appeared fine (inspected closely with a magnifying lens).......no
cracks.

Last but not least, for the first time in my life (thanks to some posts
here) decided to really ground all this equipment I own. The DX398 and the
Hammarlunds and the Ross and the RCA Victor and the 394 here in my front
shack have all been grounded. The ground rod was put in a 6ft. hole and is
in such a place that when it rains, this specific area is the most
flooded/saturated area on the property. I also added bags of salt for
conductivity and will periodically add to that. But it sure is sweet to see
all the grounds being grounded in that matter.

****The REAL TEST********

I started by turning on the Hammarlund HQ140X, this had the highest noice
floor between the Hammars. I was amazed to notice that the noise floor how
literally it dropped just about to nothing, it is like a new receiver.
Excited to say the least, ditto with the 129X. I'll even add the DX394 to
list of 'ground cures.'

But the one that amazed me the most was the DX398. I know have the
BC9000XLT on one shelf right to the right of my monitor with the 398 right
below it, less than a foot from my monitor and not a lick of hash or any RF
interfering with it whatsover. I am 'extremely' pleased. Now while I'm on
the net I have both these pieces literally right next to me. I am so happy
that I've added the 398 to the arsenal, it sure looks sweet where it's at.
I feel like I'm at the controls of a 'cock-pit' in an airplane. :-)

Thanks to the thread and the posters on the 398 and the importance of
grounding, it finally got me off my butt and did it.

I'll also add. the antenna I added for the 398 is well over 100ft. sloping
upwards to an extremely high tree. I had misplaced my insulators and
homebrewed one from some PVC pipe to take care of that. Driving in this
afternoon and seeing those well guyed masts and all those antenna almost
brought tears to me eyes. ;-)

*If you've been putting it off, get out there and do it. You'll be glad
you did.

Sounds like a day well spent!
Congratulations on the good work.
I have a feeling your story will inspire others to do the same.

Salt ? That is very corrosive ... Also, I hope you had no plans to try
growing anything in the area and that it does not leach into ground water
you plan to drink etc... Otherwise, good deal ^5. I hope it gives you many
hours of satisfaction listening :)

May you live as long as you want,
and never want as long as you live.

Yep, know what you're saying. Can't wait till I can get some more land,
the wife said 'more power to you.'(on the antenna projects) I don't think
she has ANY idea...lol.

Yeah, thanks Lenny. I think of myself in above shape, but I'll tell you,
I used little muscles I forgot I had. It was nothing 'extremely' strenuous
either, just out of the ordinary daily movements I suppose. I'm fully
recovered now. :-)

> I have a feeling your story will inspire others to do the same.

Yeah, I hope so Lenny. There's alot of power in words. Reading the thread
of the 398 vs. 2010 and reading the extremely well put together postings of
(I forget) on antennas and the importance of groundings is what made me to
decide "that's it, it's on, I'm getting this done."

It's great now to have a 1 5/8 hole with PVC coming into the shack, it
gives me incredible flexibility and now it will be childs play to add on
another antenna or wire. It was always so time consuming, that's why I
kept putting it off.

But if someone reading this, makes you kind of think about it and you know
you've been putting it off, think of the rewards.... number one in the
intelligibility of the sound and knowing that you are squeezing every bit
you can from your setup. But here's the big one IMO...lol....driving home
and seeing your project in the distance and as you drive closer to it you
start getting goosebumps (I did)....think I damn near shed a tear
(seriously) my arms and legs and chest was on big ole' goosebump....lol.
Almost made me reach for crotch. ;-)

Of course I had to walk around the property, which BTW...I NEVER do. I saw
the wifey looking out the master bedroom window with a big ole' smile on her
face. It was nice to see her happy FOR ME!! Follow me?

I'll end it on that guys, grab a friend, wait for good weather and get out
there and improve your shack so you can hear some African keying 3 watts of
the metal plate in his head.<---try at a joke. :-)

BTW the wife wants me to add a discone just for the 800 meg band up to
whatever the 9000XLT handles, I have to check.

Thanks for reading my novel. :-)

Yeah, thanks for the heads up. It was a mixture that my friend who is a
ham, has been adding to antenna setups. Wasn't straight salt, I just
don't everything that was in it, God only knows.

Where we put the grounds (BTW, they were freeking huge) was right under our
drain pipe and plus when it rains, more often than not........it blows
'right on' and towards my badass ground...lol...let it rain baby. But no,
the wife does the flowers except that area just for that fact, too much
water. But it sure is a great place to put a ground
stake,,,Muahahahhahaha!!!!!!!!

This also frees up my Antron and Shakespeare copy stick, it (Antron) WAS
hooked up to the 9000XLT, now I'll reach in the closet and pull out my MINT
IN THE BOX.......Uniden Washington Base Station.....pull out my MINT "Road
King 56" :"40th Anniversary Edition" mike, now that is one well put
together mike. Maybe monitor the bands a little, I'll never get into the
CB again like I used to, but I just might monitor channel 9.....who knows.

What you might be thinking of to add around ground rods is a substance known as
copper sulfate...

Is that it Steve? I made a note of it and later today I'll run a google on
it and see what I can come up with. Thanks for the tip. :-)

Yeah sure, watch out for tips from N8KDV though...

DX Lover,

FWIW: A mixture of 1/2 "Bentonite" (clay kitty litter); 1/3 Epson
Salt; and 1/6 Copper Sulfate works well 'in-the-ground' around ground
rods.

http://www.hard-core-dx.com/nordicdx/antenna/ground/bentonite.html

OBTW: The Grass is Aways Greener - Around the Ground Rods :o)

That's how you do a ground properly....it'll be _very_ conductive.

Thanks for that link RHF. :-) I think later today I make an antenna for my
BC9000XLT and mount it wayyyyyyy up there. :)
