It sounds like "The Westchester Wing".
It was often spotted over Westchester and Fairfield counties in the mid
80's and early 90's.
Depending on what you choose to believe, the Westchester Wing was a
group of ultralight planes flying at slow speed in close formation with
a variety of non standard lights intended to give the impression of
being a UFO, or it was a UFO.
Google searches only seem to bring up people who can "Prove" it was a
UFO, but I'm reasonably sure I read an article with an interview of
someone who said he was part of the group.
Swamp gas!

Already ID'ed as the Goodyear Airship going
south over NY then making the loooong slow right
turn, crossing over NJ, Pa and finally home to it's
home near Akron Ohio later tonight. I'm wondering
why their flying tonight with a snowstorm on the way!
They were also flying *lower* than normal altitude
as the dewpoints from about 3000 feet to surface
are at 7°F, plus the RH is around 25% - 30%.
If they were to fly any higher, where the clouds are
they would quickly ice-up. NOT something you want
to encounter in an Airship, let alone a fixed wing or
rotating wing aircraft. Hope this helps!
if you have a kc-135 tanker with an f16 behind it and another f16 on its
wing or behind it waiting to refuel
the light show will be exactly hat our describing, add sme clouds and their
you go instant UFO
271.00Mhz AM mode
138.425Mhz AM mode
ut then in your scanner if your in NYC area and se what you hear. comms are
short leave your radio on either freq, or even better use two radios.
have fun

Your just payed by the goobermint to say that aren't you!!
Was out at the local airport a few months ago at night and heard a blimp on
the CTAF coming in. Some local yocal called the FBO asking if they knew what
the UFO was flying around. Was heading out to the car to leave and there it
was, coming in to land, looked kind of alien space shipey like I will have
to admit. No sound, hovering, lights on the bottom in a triangle shape
(sound VERY familiar?). I can see how non-aviation, let alone beer drinking
red-necks out on fishing boats could misidentify an airship.

The Duck
- Have seen them flying from North To South over NYC..
- A formation about 4 times the size of The Full Moon,
A large, coherent, silent moving Circle of lights..

I saw them several times - different sizes of formation, and different
patterns of lights - presumably based on how many guys showed up.
But you have to wonder what kind of fool would go out and fly a
completely open plane when it's 15 degrees outside.

Quoted Text Follows:
"Ignus Fatuus (the flame) - As anyone in the paranormal realm will know,
ignus fatuus means "foolish fire" as well as "fire of mystery." It is
often said that in graveyards the ignus fatuus will try to mislead
investigators from the truth. Since lies and deception always surround
truth, it was felt that the ignus fatuus should surround the triangle,
which represents truth. Some feel that the ignus fatuus is in fact the
guardian of truth, that separates those who are meant to find the truth
from those who aren't."
The above paragraph refers to an emblem that the paranormal club had
created as its logo.
The above was gleaned from
http://www.clubs.psu.edu/up/paranormal/news_press_112002_logo.htm
The description of Ignus Fatuus (essentially swamp gas) in the above
definition seems to indicate a character similar to the entities in "The
Mothman Prophecies", i.e. an entity that knows the truth but presents it to
us mere humans in a fashion that is indecipherable.
Unfortunately, when looking for a more lengthy discussion on swamp gas,
ignus fatuus, etc., I was rather dumfounded that I could only find links to
paranormal and music related uses of the word. Even some of the sites that
I visit for dictionary type references did not have a definition available
for the word.
Further studying yielded the following:

The Marfa Lights present an enigma when it comes to such phenomenon.
http://www.urbanlegends.com/science/marfa_lights.html
The closest that I came to seeing UFOs was near Washington D.C. While
traveling at night, we observed an odd triangular configuration of lights
moving across the sky above us. We stopped the car and got out to examine
them. Marveling that they were definitely different, I came to the
unfortunate conclusion that they were, in fact, the wing lights on an SST.
Being from the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area, I had never seen an SST in
flight, as they weren't permitted this far inland. Washington D.C. and New
York were the 2 airports that were permitted to handle these planes in the
United States.

To know and to be, this is not even a question, there is no alternative.
You see it clearly in the loneliest little avenues between particles and
waves, shunned even by the gregarious quark and unknown by the various
strands of time, so big it cannot be seen, yet so little it is immovable,
lies the fabric of the ultimate reality gripped in the tiny fist of the all
or nothing."

Dr. J. Allen Hynek is credited with the "swamp gas" UFO explaination:
" The Air Force sent in Blue Book astronomer and UFO expert Dr. J.
Allen Hynek who, after a whirlwind probe that lasted two hours and 45
minutes, dismissed the sightings as "swamp gas.""
This is from:
http://www.detnews.com/history/ufo/ufo.htm
Dr. Hynek jumped fence on the UFO issue, and formed his own group:
Doc Hynek was something of a celebrity around here, and always has
plenty of UFO watching tips for us young radio listeners.
