We went to a local Radio Shack in a mall here in Cincinnati today to buy
an inexpensive scanner for him. We saw one for $89.00 that had all the
features he would need and give him a taste of scanning. The idea being,
enjoy it and see what features he may want later on then upgrade down
the road. He clearly does not need or want a 245XLT like I have at this
time as he is completely new to this.
The salesman kept talking about trunking and how he must have it. Funny,
since Cincinnati city & county PD & Fire are not trunked right now.
There are a very few but for his needs trunking is something he would
never care about for a long while. The salesman went on to explain how
he could program in 4 freqs and be able to rob any bank right now and
get away. Funny, my friend is not planning that either. He just wants to
get air traffic and some public service. I played along at this point &
told him to make a deal on the PRO-92 then. The salesman asked me what
that was. Yes, he asked me what the PRO-92 was. After making an ass out
of himself talking about how to scan and how important trunking is with
a wery poor explination of trunking, he did not know what scanners he
sold or what their features were, even though they were not 2 feet from
him. He even asked me if I was testing him. NO, I want to buy this
scanner with these features for $89.00. Needless to say, he told me to
have a good day & walked away.
I could not believe this. I came in to BUY something. I saw what I
wanted to buy & planned to walk out with it. Instaed, I was insulted &
talked down to by a person who had no idea what he was talking about.
I remember a time when you walked into RS and there was a salesperson
with their ham call sign on their name badge. They would walk you
through buying anything you wanted & explained how to use it.
Sorry, I just had to vent. I hope this is not a sign of things to come
here in Cincinnati.
Best regards,
Dave

This was your first mistake. Don't buy ANYTHING from Radio Shack which
requires input or a technical opinion from the "salespeople." RS is great for
fuses, adaptors, solder, etc...but anything above that level, forget it.
Their scanners are also generally way overpriced.

No, it is all over the country, and not getting any better, AND it is
not just at the Rat Shack...

I remember around 10 years ago, when the job market was tight, you
needed a college degree to manage some retail stores. Now, if you
speak english, you are in, no questions asked.
