MOBILE, Alabama -- Ham radio enthusiast Rick Barnes wants you to know that
his hobby is still relevant, even in the digital age. "After Hurricane
Katrina (Aug. 29, 2005), all the communication systems were down, but
people could still relay information over ham radio," he points out. "Ham
radios work when cell phones go down. You can put it up out in the woods
and communicate all over the world."
