From time to time we publish the basic guidelines for posting to the
rec.radio.broadcasting newsgroup, and some basic explanations of what
the group is for, and about.

Usenet newsgroup rec.radio.broadcasting (rrb), and email digest
AIRWAVES RADIO JOURNAL (ARJ) are designed to provide a public forum
for professional-level discussion and dissemination of information
pertaining to the art, business and science of radio broadcasting.

By professional-level, we mean discussions of matters of interest to
radio broadcast professionals and those with a strong and serious
interest in radio broadcasting. We do not limit participation to
broadcast professionals, but do require a certain level of maturity
and intelligence when posting here.

In order to keep the forum from erupting into flame-wars and to keep
it on topic, rrb and ARJ are *moderated* forums. This means that all
posts must be approved prior to publishing. This document is designed to
give readers a feel for what is acceptable to publish here but is not
designed to be an all-inclusive charter.

In order to be accepted for inclusion in rrb/ARJ, a post must have the
following minimal attributes.....

1) All posts must have a valid name attached to them in some way.
This means one of the following...
a) A *real name* (your actual name) This is preferred.
b) Your *on-air name* (you must include the station/network at
which you use that name)
If your Internet host doesn't include a real-name as part of the
From: line, then you should add it to the end of your post.
If you are posting sensitive information, and don't want your
name used, let me know and I'll try to cover for you.

2) All posts must have a valid 'SUBJECT' line.
This means that the subject line must accurately reflect the
content of the post. As a thread drifts from the original
focus, the subject line should be changed to reflect that shift.
Posts without a Subject: line or ones which use a bogus
subject may not be posted. Subjects should not include
extraneous characters designed for emphasis,, but only the
actual words and punctuation needed to set the subject of the
posting.

3) All posts must pertain to the charter of the group, *RADIO* broadcasting.
We do not accept posts about other radio services (ham, CB
cellular, scanner etc), television-related posts or other
off-topic material.
Occasionally a post about TV will be approved if it appears to
have a broad interest to radio people. However, this is
considered an exception and is not encouraged.

4) All posts must have a valid return address. Posts with email addresses
that bounce may be excluded as a means to curb forgeries.

5) All posts must be submitted as "ascii-text".
Binaries, MIME and other attachments do not post well to
netnews and may be discarded

6) All posts must be formatted to an absolute maximum of 78 columns.
The standard for a text-terminal is 80 columns. We specify 78
to allow for quoting in followups. Failure to do this will result
in "line damage" which is the uneven wrapping of long lines.

7) Quoting of previous article text should be kept to a minimum and
*never* exceed 49% of the entire article. Never quote the signature
files from previous posts. Only use the bare minimum needed to make
your points. If replying via the Digest, "please" never quote the
entire (or substantial portion of) the digest.

8) Please distinguish between the 'followup' and 'reply' functions of
your newsreader. Followup sends your response to the group, reply
sends it to the poster via email. When replying to such a request
for information which is of limited interest to the entire
group, please email to the poster. There is no purpose served by
posting replies to very personal requests to the entire globe.
However, if the requested information is of potential general
interest, then please do post.

9) When posting Help Wanted or Positions Wanted, please include a Full
REAL name, Company name, postal address, FAX and/or voice phone and
(if applicable) email address.

10) When asking for, or offering, information about a local station or
personality, always give a little background. Remember most people
are not familiar with your market. If you use a station's slogan,
always include the calls and city too.

11) Commercial postings are a delicate issue. Some would like to see
none of it, others seem to take the tack that mild commercial posts
are OK provided they are not too 'in your face' and are part of the
flow of conversation. The moderator makes all final judgements on
acceptability of commercially-motivated posts. If you are in any way
connected with the company you are posting about, you *must* disclose
that affiliation even if you are not an official spokesperson.
Avoid blatant commercials. Make your points in conversation. Never
overtly bash a competitor's product. Be nice, it will be to your
ultimate benefit.

12) Remember that you, the poster, bear all responsibility (if any)
for copyright, libel, trademark and other matters when posting to the
Internet (not just to this group). Any copyrighted material
posted here *must* contain an attribution line *and* a line of text
stating that the material is 'used by permission of the copyright
holder'. Small portions of copyrighted works may be excerpted under
the 'fair use doctrine'. The exact amount of that usage is to be
determined by the poster and/or a competent copyright attorney.
Apparently copyrighted material, not containing disclaimers,
will not be posted to this group. So far copyrights have not
become a problem on the Internet, but as the net grows, it may
become more of an issue.

13) Flames are not permitted on this forum. A flame is defined as
"personal insult or ridicule". It is perfectly fine to argue the
points or opinions raised by a poster, but not to personally insult
the poster. Calling of names is also considered a flame. We have
conversations here, not shouting matches.

Also avoid posting...

* Known false or misleading information.
* Overtly profane posts (profanity is not forbidden, just use
discretion).
* Loooong signature files. 4 to 6 lines is a good soft-limit.

...VERY IMPORTANT... ...VERY IMPORTANT... ...VERY IMPORTANT...

Every poster is responsible for what (s)he posts. I make no effort
to verify authenticity of postings and any copyright, slander or other
legal matters arising from a public posting belong with the poster.
Please use discretion when posting potentially damaging information
to this, or any public, forum.

Thanks for reading. Hopefully this will clear up some of the
misunderstandings about posting to rec.radio.broadcasting.
