WIA CENTENARY - MARCH AUGUST 2010

We start this weeks and this new years broadcast with a reminder that
this very special year w will be celebrating the centenary of organised
amateur radio in Australia.

The March through August celebrations are recognition of the foundation
of the WIA and the very start of organised amateur radio in Australia
during 1910.

Prior to the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1905 there was no real regulatory
control of the radio spectrum, although early demonstrations and
experimentation began in Australia in the late 1890s.

At the time the government wanted to protect its revenue from the wired
telegraph system and initially considered wireless telegraphy to be of
little use, but it then became useful for ship to shore communications.

Private wireless experimenters were considered a hindrance to the emerging
maritime use of wireless. Others began to recognise a greater potential use
of the technology.

Conflict between the commercial and amateur use of the spectrum was evident,
licensed operation began in 1905. Within five years experimenters needed to
get organised for their very survival.

On 11 March, 1910 a meeting of like-minded people in the Hotel Australia,
Martin Place, Sydney, formed the Institute of Wireless Telegraphy of
Australia, soon after dropping the word 'telegraphy' from its name.

Chairman of the founding meeting, George Taylor, proposed "the formation of
an institution amongst experimenters and enthusiasts in wireless for their
mutual benefit."

As preperations get underway don't forget to drop the WIA Centenary
Committee and this WIA National News Service details of YOUR celebration
activities, such as the story we ran last week fronm the first planned in
VK by Matthew Weatherley VK4TMW from the Toowoomba and Downs Wireless Group
who has organised a display of up to 40 radio transmitters and receivers
dating from the 1920s through to modern times.

The display will run from March until June!

VK7REC Snow Hill is OFF AIR indefinitely.
Joe VK7JG reports that the top section of the VK7REC tower has collapsed.
This in part due to lack of maintenance, old age and several lightening
strikes.
One aerial was on this section and the second aerial was damaged by the
falling tower.

VK5ALE Lower Eyre Peninsula ARC Clubrooms Destroyed

Michael Carey VK5ZEA President Lower Eyre Peninsula ARC reported that their
rooms were destroyrd when a bush fire threatened the outskirts of
Port Lincoln during a Catastrophic Fire danger day.

Strong, hot North winds made fighting the fire impossible and a wind change
made things a lot worse. 12 homes were lost, countless sheds and rural
properties destroyed but thankfully no lives were lost but it was not
a very merry Christmas for some families last year.

Their next meeting is Wednesday January 6th, they will then be discussing
what direction what equipment needs might be.

"Here is one story from the fire that promotes D-Star which I though I would
share.

By the time I first noticed the fire while I was at work, the NextG phone
service was fully congested, I was unable to make calls or send SMS
messages. I did however have my IC-91AD handheld radio with me.

I was planning on connecting up to REF012 B to check in on the San Diego
D-Star net at 1430 (my time). Instead I connected VK5REX B to REF003 C
and put out an emergency call for assistance from anyone who had immediate
access to a telephone.

Steve VK5ZSW replied and I passed my home phone number info to him so he
could contact my wife to let her know that I was OK and that I was going
to move to safer ground. The message was dutifully passed along and Steve
confirmed that my wife got the message. Although Steve was some 170+ Km away
in Moonta on the Yorke Peninsula, he was able to use the VK5REX repeater
perfectly. Ross VK3HBS also heard my call through REF003 C and he too rang
my wife with the message."

Australian Special Event

Look for the special callsign, VI2AJ2010, to be used by Scouts under the
guidance of Fishers Ghost Amateur Radio Club members (VK2FFG) at
Cataract Scout Park, near Sydney, during the triennial Australian Scout

We were saddened to hear of the news about the bushfire destruction of the
Lower Eyre Peninsula Amateur Radio Clubrooms. As we are still searching for
a new clubroom that we can call "Home" we certainly feel for them and wish
them well for a speedy rebuild.

The Gympie group is having a Christmas-New Year BBQ on Sunday the 10th of
January. The location will be the duck ponds on the north side of town and
the time, 11:30am. Mark January 10 in your diary and we'll see you there.

NEW RADIO TECHNIQUE AIDS TRAINING COMPETITION SKIIERS

Tiny radio transmitters on skis are helping competitive skiers analyse
their technique. These units can be attached to an athlete's skis and

transmit through small antennas located to the front and the back of the skis.

Receiving stations placed alongside a slope in regular intervals pick up
the signals and analyse the time a signal needs to travel from the antenna
to a station, thus accurately determining an antenna's position within
three centimetres. A computer attached to the receiver calculates the
position of the skis every millisecond and displays their exact path on a
monitor.

The Austrian firm Abatec developed the system. It says that its adaptable
to just about any sport that requires a close study of athlete performance
and event timing.

And as they say... steer clear of the yellow snow!

TAKE PART IN AN HF AUDIO ART EXPERIMENT

Kapwani Kiwanga, a Canadian artist who works primarily with sound and vision
invites radio amateurs with good HF capabilities to take part in an audio
art project on 20 metres.

Kapwani will transmit a message on 20 metres from the Netherlands to
territories that have a historic link with Holland,

Participants are asked to re-transmit the received message back to him
and then you send it back and so on and so on. This ping-pong effect will
increasingly distort the message finally resulting in an abstract artistic
sound recording.

She has created an original sound piece based on archives of 1940's Dutch
programming found at Radio Netherlands. Her sound creation will include some
Morse code and sound recordings. It will not be "music" in the conventional
sense.

POWER COMPANY TOLD TO TURN OFF INTERFERENCE IN AIR BAND

Its not BPL this time, but Duke Energy, which is an electric utility
serving North Carolina, has been ordered to cease operating a small portion
of its power grid. This, because of its inability to remedy RFI on 111.7
MHz. that the FCC deems to be a hazard to flight safety. Frank Haas, KB4T
has more in this report:

The story goes this way. In response to a complaint of interference, on
November 25th an agent of the FCC's Norfolk Office inspected power line

facilities belonging to Duke Energy located near the Falls Lake Reservoir
in Durham and Wake Counties, North Carolina. During the examination the
agent observed the facilities radiating energy on frequencies including

111.7MHz. This FCC says this caused harmful interference to air navigation
aids used by pilots flying into nearby Raleigh-Durham International airport.

Later the same day, the agent notified the call centre for Duke Energy of
the harmful interference and of the need to cease operations at the
affected locations. The call centre supervisor stated someone would
contact the agent about the interference in a few days. So the FCC waited
the few days but as of December 2nd Duke Energy has not contacted the FCC
about the interference or notified it that operations had been turned off
at the affected locality.

So on December 3rd the FCC got tough. It notified Duke Energy that
operation of the power-line facilities was causing interference in
violation of Section 15.5(b) of the Commission Rules. It directed Duke
Energy to cease operations at the affected locations immediately and keep
that part of the grid shut down until repairs had been made. It also told
Duke that failure to comply could subject the company to additional
enforcement action against it.

According to the regulatory agency violations of the Communications Act or
the FCC Rules could subject the violator to substantial monetary
forfeitures, or seizure of equipment. It could also lead to criminal
sanctions, including imprisonment.

At airtime its not yet known if Duke Energy has complied with the FCC
directive to take down its power grid in the geographic area where the
interference to aviation communications has been taking place. The

OFCOM GRANTS EXTENSION TO 500 kHz UK STA

United Kingdom hams involved in 500kHz experimentation have had their
license Notices of Validity extended to 2012. This to permit the continued
evaluation of that band.

On Wednesday December 16th, UK telecommunications regulator Ofcom announced
that following requests made by the Radio Society of Great Britain, the

period of validity for all 501 to 504 kHz Notices of Validity is to be
extended. This, follows negotiations with the Maritime and Coastguard
Agency which lead Ofcom to extending the validity period to February 29,
2012.

The Notices of Validity, which are the UK equivalent of the FCC's granting
of a Special Temporary Authority, were originally planned to expire at the
end of February 2010.

EPC WW DX Contest 2010

The European PSK Club has invited radio amateurs from all over the world to
participate in the EPC WW DX Contest 2010.

The objective of the contest is to establish as many contacts as possible
between radio amateurs around the world by using the BPSK125 mode.

Everybody can work everybody for QSO and multiplier credit.

Bands: We recommend the following frequencies -
80 meters (3.580 - 3.590 MHz),
40 meters (7.040 - 7.050 MHz),
20 meters (14.070 - 14.080 MHz),
15 meters (21.070 - 21.080 MHz), and

Hi I am Ray VK4CF with news from Redcliffe Amateur Radio Club Queensland.

One of the our club members , Kevin, VK4UH, will be joining a
VHF/UHF/Microwave DXpedition from the 3rd January -14th January 2010.
The expedition is to Norfolk Island and will be operating as VK9NA.
The expedition will be operating on the following bands:

6 METRES 100W with a 3 ELEM YAGI, 2 METRES 360W a 10 ELEM YAGI,
70 CM 110W with a 23 ELEM YAGI, 23 CM 90W and a 1.2 MTR DISH,
13 CM 20W with a 1.2 MTR DISH, 9 CM 20W and a 1.2 MTR DISH, 6 CM 15W and a
1.2 MTR DISH and 3 CM 5W with a 1.2 MTR DISH. The team will be using
Yaesu FT897D & FT817ND radios and will be using SSB, FSK441, JT65A, B&C & CW.

Kevin advised the Club at last Monday night's get together that all the

Relay station off the air

There has been a fire in the high voltage room of the external mains power
supply at Radio Netherlands Worldwide's relay station in Madagascar.

Fire-fighters from the Madagascan capital Antananarivo managed to bring the
blaze under control within hours.

The fire destroyed the high voltage circuit breaker equipment, broadcasts
from Madagascar were suspended. Satellite and Internet broadcasts are not
affected.

Some transmissions moved to other sites, but because of the Christmas
holidays this took longer than usual to organise.

SENATOR FEINGOLD WANTS RADIO MARTI TO GO QRT

US Senator Russ Feingold's "Spotlight on Spending" series has taken aim at
Radio and TV Marti. Feingold, a member of the Senate Budget Committee
calls Radio and TV Martï¿½ are a relic of Cold War attempts to broadcast
radio and TV signals into Cuba that virtually no one tunes in to anymore.

According to Feingold, government studies show that Radio and TV Martï¿½ are
riddled with problems, and fall short of journalistic standards. He also
says that as the United States progresses toward a more modern and
constructive relationship with Cuba, that Radio and TV Martï¿½ no longer have
any real diplomatic or fiscal purpose.

Backing him up is a January 2009 report by the Government Accountability
Office. It found that Radio and TV Martï¿½ broadcasts continue to face

jamming by the Cuban government. According to the GAO, the best available
research suggests that the audience for Radio and TV Martï¿½ is small, and
its effectiveness uncertain.

This story started with a phone message left by Janet who is Ian VK7IR's
XYL. The message was a little concerning as it said Ian would not be able
to do the VK7 broadcast as he was in hospital.

This left the broadcast coordinator and a number of other people a little
concerned about Ian's welfare!

After a few days a wonderful email arrived from Ian with the following
humours message-.

"Sorry about last week...things happened rather quickly!

My Master Oscillator was suffering some frequency instability, with
consequent drop-outs at rare intervals, which would have been nasty under
several circumstances.......

This has now been fixed by locking the MO to an implanted frequency
standard, which is working well, and I shall be available as required from
now on.

Remembering the unit men - Ohm

Hello I'm Jim Linton VK3PC with the first in a series of brief looks at
those who made discoveries and have their names as units of measurement.

Georg Simon Ohm was a remarkable individual born in 1789 and began school
at the age of 11, gained his Ph. D with the career aim of
becoming a professor.

Ohm was extremely interested in electricity and the then recently
discovered phenomenon of electromagnetism.

That led him to begin experimenting, taking measurements and established a
mathematical relationship - the very basis of what we know as Ohms Law.

Initially he suffered from those sceptical of his work but it did result
in the post of professor of physics in Nuremburg and later at the Berlin
university.

Some 37 years after his death, he gained the ultimate recognition when in
Britain first, and then at the First International Electrical Congress in
Paris 1881 the unit of resistance was named the Ohm.

New Year schedule for HO-68

Alan Kung, BA1DU, of AMSAT-China has provided this schedule for the
Amateur Radio satellite XIWANG-1 (HO-68) for the New Year holiday.

The schedule also shows the popular SSB linear transponder being switched on
New Year's Day at 21:05 and 22:50 UT.

The 50 kHz bandwidth linear transponder for SSB and CW operation is
inverting so an LSB signal on the uplink gives USB on the downlink.

It uses these frequencies:

Uplink :145.925 - 145.975 MHz
Downlink:435.765 - 435.715 MHz
Beacon :435.790 MHz

The FM transponder uplink is 145.825 MHz and downlink is 435.675 MHz, a
67.0 Hz CTCSS tone is required.

Welcome to QNews from VK4WIA. I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP welcoming you to
the start of the centenary year of the Wireless Institute of Australia.

And so what was on your New Year's list of resolutions?

Has your club affiliated with the WIA and getting the benefits of
cheaper insurance and club distribution of inwards QSL cards, etc? Are
you a WIA member and getting all the benefits? Just think, if you
purchase Amateur Radio magazine at the news agent you will be paying
more than the annual subscription and AR gets delivered to your mail box when
you are an Institute member.

Has your club got its booking to use the VK100WIA callsign?

Let's consider the Amateurs Code and make 2010 the "will do" not a "gunnado"
year.

I'm Trevor Taege, VK4BAT with the news from the Gympie Communications &
Electronics Group:

In relation to our own clubroom situation, our local State Member of
Parliament David Gibson has written to QR asking for a resolution of our
negotiations, so we're still progressing in the matter and are keen to see
it resolved in the near future.

A new weather page has been added to our Club website and the stats show
that people are viewing the site from as far away as Russia. The new
weather page will be especially interesting for distant IRLP users.
Google Gympie Ham Radio to find our website.

The first Club meeting for 2010 will be held this Thursday night, January 7
at the usual location in the basement of Leading Edge Electronics - entry is
via Reef Street.

Everyone is welcome.

Hi I am Ray VK4CF with news from Redcliffe Amateur Radio Club for QNEWS.

One of the our club members , Kevin, VK4UH, will be joining the
VHF/UHF/Microwave DXpedition from the 3rd January -14th January 2010.
The expedition is to Norfolk Island and will be operating as VK9NA.
The expedition will be operating on the following bands:

The club was advised that it has been successful in obtaining a grant in
excess of $20,000 to upgrade not only the 2 and 70 repeaters and cavities
but to also finalise the fit-out of the caravan so it can be deployed to
assist in providing emergency communications in the event of a natural
disaster.

The grant was developed by Peter, VK4EA, who did all the "leg work" in the
development of the proposal, coordinating the quotes from over a dozen
suppliers and putting the whole package together. Well Done Peter! With a
few working bees early in the new year there is a better than 50% chance
that the caravan could be deployed during the John Moyle contest that is
fast approaching.

Club President David, VK4DC, will be away taking his good lady on a trip to
China and Hong Kong early in January and club secretary, Peter, VK4TAA,
will be mobile in central Queensland for about 3 weeks during January.
Peter will have his mobile rig in the vehicle and would be pleased to help
anyone wishing to get their worked all Queensland award. Please listen out
for Peter on or about 7070 most days from 7 January 2010.

The club will be open each Wednesday but with Charles, VK4BTC and Ken,
VK4FKEN taking holidays in early February there may be some small changes
to the opening times during the week. Stay tuned for details.

Well it is time to go for this week, so I hope the start to 2010 has been
an easy one as the rest of the year for club members will be a very busy

OUT FOR A FEW DAYS. BY THE LOOKS OF THINGS, THE NODE WANTED TO HAVE
CHRISTMAS OFF LIKE THE REST OF US ! LUCKILY THE FAULT WAS REPORTED BY
TARCADIAN BOB VK4AAH, WHO IS CURRENTLY ON A ROUND AUSTRALIA TRIP
AND IN THE VINCENT GULF AREA. TARC IRLP MASTER ROB VK4RB GAVE THINGS
A KICK IN THE YOU KNOW WHERE AND NOW EVERYTHING WITH THE NODE IS
OPERATING PROPERLY. THANKS BOB AND THANKS ROB !

REMEMBER LAST WEEK I MENTIONED THAT GAVIN VK4ZZ WAS AFTER OPERATORS FOR THE
TERAHA ENDURANCE RIDE CLINIC THAT IS HAPPENING IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS ON
SUNDAY 17TH JANUARY? THERE ARE ONLY FOUR OPERATORS ON THE LIST AT THE
MOMENT AND MORE ARE NEEDED. PLEASE CONTACT GAVIN ON MOBILE 0427 182469 OR
VIA THE CLUBS REPEATERS OR EVEN SEND HIM A MESSAGE IF YOU CAN HELP OUT.

LAST WEEK I ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE WIA IS SEEKING EXPRESSIONS OF

RECOGNISED WIA EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS ACCREDITATION FRAMEWORK.

COMMUNICATIONS LINK THEN CLICK ON THE REGISTER YOUR INTEREST LINK

TAKING NOTE OF THE REGIONS THAT SHOW GOOD INTEREST AND DEPLOY
