I think that the second one is wrong. I'll try to check, but I belive
that the song goes like this:

76 Trombones led the big parade,
with 110 cornets right behind
and more than 1000 reeds
sprouting up like weeds,
with horns of every shape and kind.

When American patriot Paul Revere was waiting to spread the word that the
British were about to attack their colonists, he and his partner chose a
signaling systems whereby the partner would sit in the tower of the Old North
Church in order to see the impending invasion. If he saw the British
approaching by land, he would hang 1 lighted lantern in the tower so Paul could
see it from the point where he sat witing on horseback. If the British
attacked by sea, he hung two lanterns. The actual quotes "One if by land and
two if by sea" come from a patriotic poem about the incident.

> 1 S U P is a B 1 Stroke Under Par Is A Birdie

The game of golf. Each hole is given a "par", which is the number of strokes
(hits) the golfer is expected to use when moving the ball from the starting tee
to the hole. They have a bunch of weird names for each possibility. Hitting
the exactly correct number of tmes is "making par". 1 shot too few is a
Birdie, 2 shots too few is an Eagle, 1 shot too many is a Bogie, etc.

I think this may have been a song or something during World War II, but when I
was in college it was widely used to describe any large, undesirable female.

> 3 B M (S H T R) 3 Blind Mice (See How They Run)

From a rhyme for children from the Mother Goose set of rhymes:
Three Blind Mice, Three Blind Mice
See how they run, See how they run.
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife
Have you ever seen such a sight in your life
As Three Blind Mice.
It can easily be sung as a round. It is often sung at soccer matches when the
three officials are not as good as the crowd would like them to be.

Another childhood poem familiar to most Americans
The 3 Little Kittens they lost their mittens
And they began to cry.
"Oh mother dear, we sadly fear, our mittens we have lost"
"What, lost your mittens, you naughty kittens. Then you shall have no pie."
The next verse goes on about how they found their mittens, got pie, etc.

Yet another childhood poem:
Rub-a-dub-dub

> 3 S (L M C & sometimes S) 3 Stooges (Larry, Moe, Curly &

> i.e. I count 4 "Stooges?" here, not 3.

The 3 Stooges were a trio of idiots who made a huge series of Hollywood movies
in which they mainly ran around bumping into objects and slapping each other.
When one of the original 3 left the series, he was replaced by Shemp.

> 3 S make an O 3 Strikes make an Out

In baseball, when the batter swings at the pitch and misses, it's called a
strike. Also, if the pitch was thrown neatly down the middle, right in front
of the batter, and the batter doesn't swing at all, it's called a strike. If
the batter gets 3 strikes, his turn at bat is over and someone else comes up to
bat.

> 3 Y and a C O D 3 Yards and a Cloud Of Dust

American football (gridiron). You need to move the ball forward 10 yards in 4
plays, so any team that can consistently gain 3 yards on every play will
continue making their 10-yards every 4 plays. However, this is a very brutal
way to play the game, since it mostly involves colliding with other people. I
believe some pro team was known for using the "Three Yards and a cloud of dust"
offense, which means they were pretty tough in the collisions.

> 4 L C that I'm L O 4 Leaf Clover that I'm Looking Over

Popular American song:
I'm looking over a four-leaf clover
That I overlooked before...

> 5 F 2 E of B 5 Foot 2 Eyes of Blue

Popular American song:
Five foot two
Eyes of Blue
Boy what that five feet could do
Has anybody seen my gal?...

> 7 B for 7 B 7 Brides for 7 Bothers

Broadway play and MGM hollywood movie musical

> 10 L I B 10 Little Indian Boys

Seven little eight little nine little Indians
Ten little Indian boys (or girls)

Title of a song written by American pop singer Paul Simon

> 76 T L the B P 76 Trombones Led the Big Parade

From the broadway musical and Hollywood movie "The Music Man". The grand
fianle song is about a wonderful brass band:
Seventy six trombones led the big parade
With a hundred and ten cornets close behind...

> 77 S S 77 Sunset Strip

American tv show from the early 60's in which a studly teen idol sort of guy
works as a parking lot attendant but dreams of bigger things.

> 97 P W 97 Pound Weakling

When Charles Atlas began selling his body building formula in America, he
always told his own story, in which he went from a 98 pound weakling who got
sand kicked on him at the beach, to a muscle-bound lug who bikini clad women
followed everywhere. I'm pretty sure the correct number is 98, but I suppose
we could find someone who remembers it as 97.

> 99 B of B on the W 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

The title of an annoying song sung by children during long car/bus rides:
99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer
Take one down and pass it around. 98 bottle of beer on the wall.
98 bottle of beer on the wall...
and so on. When someone starts the song with 1000 bottles of beer on the wall,
you know you are in for a pretty miserable car/bus trip.

> 101 C C B 101 Clarinets Came Behind

This should actually be 110 Cornets, not 101 Clarinets. (See 76 T L the B P).
I can't think of anything more annoying than 101 clarinets marching together,
and I *play* the clarinet.

> 600 C in the L B 600 Charged in the Light Brigade

From the famous poem (A.L. Tennyson?) called the Charge of the Light Brigade.
"Into the valley of death rode the 600..."

> 714 B N of S J F 714 Badge Number of Sgt. Joe Friday

Sgt. Joe Friday was the main character on the American police drama "Dragnet".
Each episode began with a still photo of his badge, which happened to be number
714.

> 1,000 E has the N 1,000 Eyes has the Night

I don't know where it comes from, but I am familiar with the phrase.

> 2,130 L G C G R 2,130 Lou Gehrig's Consecutive Game Record

Lou Gehrig was an American baseball player who played in 2130 consecutive games
before succumbing to a disease that is now known as Lou Gehrig's disease (I
believe it is formally called ALS.) He played for the New York Yankees at the
same time as baseball legend Babe Ruth. Most players now are lucky to go one
full season (160 games) without sitting out at least on game due to an injury,
so it is not likely anyone will ever top LG's record. He was known as the Iron
Horse.

Even worse is when you're on a bus with mathematicians:

Aleph-null bottles of beer on the wall,
Aleph-null bottles of beer.
You take one down and pass it around,
Aleph-null bottles of beer on the wall.

Actually, there's more than a slight possibility that Lou Gehrig's record will
be broken. Assuming that there is a semblance of a baseball season next year,
Cal Ripken, Jr. is due to break the record. (For those of you outside the US,
there is a dispute between the Major League Baseball players and owners of
Major League ballclubs. The players a right now on strike, and have been since
August. The owners have cancelled the remainder of the season, including the
playoffs and World Series. As the dispute is not resolved, it is not known
what will happen to the next season.)

And a full season is 162 games.
