The name of each word's length shares at least one letter with the word.

c o i i

(With all that spoilage a rotten answer is to be expected!)

All the words have anagrams formed in the same manner, viz. second
letter, third letter, first letter, then all the remaining letters in
the original order, giving arc, once, optic, ripest, auction
respectively.

The length of each successive word forms a continuous sequence of
integers.

Or another more literal answer:
c, co, co, nothing, and co.

(What do they have in 'common')
