area where, by "curious" coincidence, I have a personal connection
thanks to my great grandfather who played chess regularly with the

That one sent me to the dictionary to see whether DER LAND was
a possible expression in German. It isn't; LAND is neuter, so
it would be DAS LAND. But "nation" could be LAND in English,
so the clue still works and I think it's the rest of us that
are beat.

"the German" is DER.

I suppose "the German" could be a composite indicator. But I'd have assumed that the indicator was simply "German", and thus would not have assumed it applied to both "the" and "land" on either side of it --- as, ultimately, you seem to have concluded.

Well, when I was wondering if "the German land" could be DER LAND,
I wasn't exactly viewing "German" as a translation indicator, but as
part of a 3-word definition whose answer would be in German without
needing an indicator as such. But, yes, that's clearly not the right
reading.

As a passing stranger here, may I observe that the clue does work as far
as DER and LAND are concerned, so long as they are addressed separately,
as Mark explains.

And if it's open season on the clue I would point out that 'beat', in
the sense of 'won against', is transitive, while 'won' itself is
intransitive. It follows that 'beat' and 'won' are not synonyms, or
mutually substitutable. According to my own rules of crossword clueing,
'won' cannot therefore be validly clued by 'beat'. Unless I've
overlooked some English construction in which this is not true, of
course.

I read this as:

Present = NOW
realignment = reversal (or anagram) indicator
of = DE
French = translation indicator
political extremes = R and L
and = AND
it's a different world altogether! = WONDERLAND

Magical country = WONDERLAND
found in = link
an = AN
addition to = insertion indicator
Earth = WORLD
with = another insertion indicator
an exotic = anagram indicator
end -> NDE

W(ON(DER)L)AND: i.e., WAND (stick) around [ONL(y) (endlessly just)
taking DER]

I'd have parsed this as "stick=wand", "just=only", "the German=der", thus

"W (on (der) l) and"

Doesn't affect the cluing or the judging, but can you comfortably say
"Neither A nor B are" (when both A and B are singular)? (Should be
"lives," unless it's a Pondian thing.)
