Hi!

I have 3 Koi - Showas - 3 years old. My wife and I left on a trip for 10
days. When we came back one of the Koi's color had "washed out". The orange
was almost all gone. It looked like it had been bleached out. Now it is
white with these faint markings that were once bright orange. The other 2
Koi show no signs of this. All 3 seem healthy - they are active and are
eating well.

Does anyone have an idea of what happened? How can I get this color back.

Thanks for any help.

There are koi (usually white ones) that are painted... literally... I
can't for my life think of what they're called... we have some at the
pond/pet store downtown.... after a while the paint washes off and you
have a solid white fish.... just like they paint the painted glass fish
you see in aquariums....

Koi are painted artificially in that way? Wow.. I think that might be
happening to one of the babies I bought. I just thought his colors were
fading with age naturally. I'll have to wait and see.

Not ALL Koi.... the ones that are have a special name, I just can't think
of it for my life... I'll have to stop at the store and look at her sign
hanging over them.... hers are "premium white" with little bits of colors
painted on...

That's not the case here. I've had the Koi for 3 years and it's been
brightly colored that whole time.

sounds like ammonia burn, is it a milky color?

Hi Ken!

Thanks for responding.

It doesn't seem to be an ammonia problem. I tested my water and it doesn't
register any ammonia. The white on the Koi looks the same as always, not
milky. It's just that the orange has faded. The other 2 Koi look fine. It's
weird. I bought these from you 3 years ago. Good quality fish too and I'll
buy more from you when I need to add or replace. So, I know it's not a
matter of quality.

Any other ideas?

John

The name of the koi I was telling you about that are painted are Fire
Cracker Koi... at least, that's what they're called around here... I have
one.. her name is snowball... she's about 20" and had about 5 nickel-sized
orange spots on her last year...... this year... maybe 2 or 3 pea-sized
ones.... they're fading quickly now....

Do you use any color enhancing foods such as tetra sticks. Costs a bunch but
the fish love it and supposedly makes colors vibrant. My Koi do change color
over time anyway. Iv'e had one blue and white that turned blue and creamy
yellow. Another orange and white has gained some orange spots, a mostly
white koi has some faded orange patches developing, one of my black moors is
turning orange. Makes it interesting trying to keep them identified.

I would tend to agree with sandy's post.. if you left of a period of time...
you were probably not feeding your fish. Yet it seems strange that they
would fade out so quickly.. try hikari color or some other type of color
food..

loss of color can indicate an illness, a thickening of the slime coat....
loss of color can also occur when the temperature increases. black color
especially is unstable and fades with heat. INgrid
