Computer Boy added some new pictures today.

See Page 4 (fast or slow load) btw, slow load will make it so when you
click on the thumbnail the big picture shows instantly. See, Orchid in
bloom(2), Pondsai (2), Patio Pond (1), and aquarium fish, including the red
cap oranda that is losing it's red. (I think it's gone thru the wash cycle
too often.) ;o)

Jan,
Love the new pics. The orchid is beautiful. What did you do to get it
to bloom like that? What kind of light did/do you provide? Altogether
lovely!!

Hi Terry,
It took 4-5 years for that orchid to bloom again after it was given to me.
What worked was putting it outside in the summer and almost zero
fertilizer.
My fish have really long fancy names like some would not expect. They go
by, Ryunkin in the upstairs 20. Moor in the downstairs tank, ryunkin in mom
& dad's bedroom. ;o) ~ jan

Hi Leslie, you asked:

>Jan.....question about those pondsai.....how big are these things?

Maybe 2 quarts.

>Does yours have fish in it? Can you put fish in them?

Yes & yes. 2 guppies. Judy had her guppies spawn. Hmm, do livebearers spawn
or is there another word? Perhaps give birth?

>Also...is that a small lily in yours? I thought I seen small lily pads....

Yes, but it didn't do very well as my front room was just too cold. I have
moved it to a terrarium pond where it is reviving.

I have since taken apart the pondsai since that picture. As some of you
might have remembered Rox gave me one free (out of the goodness of her
heart) and I fish tested it for her. Unfortunately due to rough shipping,
imo, it started to leak. I used aquarium sealer and that stopped it, but
either I just slow it down or water got underneath and in between her
coating of sealants and undermined it and it started to leak again. The
fish testing had already (after 3 months and the fish still alive) been
completed and I had no need for Rox to replace it (nor did I want her to go
to the added expense though she did offer when it first leaked). The
container she made is quite unique looking and I plan to use it as a fairy
garden container this summer.~ jan

Thanks Nedra,

As far as I know, orchids only bloom once a year, if you're lucky. The key
is to put them outside during the summer. Still it took mine 4-5 years
before it bloomed again. If I was only keeping a couple house plants,
instead of my forest, I would have tossed it long ago. But when you tend a
forest, what's another plant? ;o) ~ jan

Actually, those took quite a few shots and I did them wrong. Computer boy
was able to sharpen them somehow, so they didn't look as blurry as they do
in the real photo. DH took the one on page 3 and note he did not use the

Hi Jan,
Just what is a fairy garden? And how do you contain them?;-) It sounds like
something my grand daughters would like, especially if I tell them the name.

Bonnie,

I know you directed your question to Jan but the question, 'How do you contain
them' tickled my fancy and Jan saw a fairy garden at my house, added some
twists and made it really cute.

Take one large and flat container with a drain hole. Or line a container with
gravel.
Add soil.
Plant with little plants. Herbs are good, if you keep them clipped. {Jan, what
have you used for plants?}
In the spring I like to use Johnny Jump-ups.
Now decorate - the fun part!

Some ideas ~
Use small gravel to make paths.
Sink a small dark bowl for a pond (of course) Jan had one of her boys make one
in art class.
Float duckweed in the pond for lily pads, one lilac blossom makes a lovely lily
bloom.
Hit the craft store and find tiny little clay pots, dragonflies, frogs,
ladybugs, glass pebbles, fairy figures, bird houses, garden tools, little
picket fences (I'm a dangerous woman at the craft store)....
Add pretty sea shells.
If your fairy garden is big enough some craft stores sell little greenhouses
and garden benches.
You can make fairy furniture with twigs, twine and glue on dried flowers.

If you provide a serene fairy garden the fairies will never leave :-)

I haven't seen your original post, but K30 is the creativity creator
anyway. I have a picture of mine from last year which I'll try to get
computer boy to put on page 4 'soon'. He'll probably growl at me since he
just put those others up the other day, but oh well... <eg>

>Plant with little plants. Herbs are good, if you keep them clipped. {Jan, what
>have you used for plants?}

I used irish moss, Wee Willy & Kennelworth Ivy. Also planted some mystery
seeds (and it's still a mystery as to what they were) and I put a couple of
morning glory seeds in that grew up the deck rail and trailing lobelia that
hung over and down the deck.

>Sink a small dark bowl for a pond (of course) Jan had one of her boys make one
>in art class.

That's why we have a picture. I had to send something in to the teacher to
make her understand why he was working so hard on these odd shaped little
bowls and painting them all black. He got an A, and I'm sure it was the
picture, as the other stuff he made was well..... ah, hmmm, not exactly
show quality. ;o) Course he always tries his best and I think High School
teachers appreciate that.

> little picket fences

I think the little WHITE picket fence is a must. Look for little bird
houses for your fairies to live in. I used one that was meant as a
Christmas tree ornament and you can also get little signs. I have ones that
say: Welcome, herbs 4 sale, room for rent. ~ jan

Only thing I have to add is not to water them when in bloom, at least the

watered the bloom would soon perish. On the Xmas bloom I did not water and
the bloom lasted over a month. As far as humidity, I park mine next to the
Patio Pond's bell fountain. During the summer, when it's outside, I park it
on a bed of rocks that have water to the top. ~ jan

Give Heidi another year and I'll put one outside again.

I got so excited with my post this morning that when I went to Target I found a

Hi Leslie,
My DH just smiles and accepts. When we were first married - almost overtime he
came home the house was different. I could never get it just the way I thought it
should be. He was always bumping into something that wasn't there yesterday. I
no longer move the furniture, but I'm always adding or removing something or
other. The only time he notices is when he had to take part in the creating.

Bonnie,

My first fairy garden was in a bird bath basin and it worked just fine.

Leslie asked about putting a rosie red in the little pond.
Maybe a rosie red baby if you have some anacharis in there and the if the fairy
garden is outside make sure the pondlet is not in full sun.
{And no cat is around to use it as a water dish!}

One wonders what to bait a fairy trap with.... I would try anything glittery to
start with.

My fairy garden habit goes back to my Nana (Grandmother).
She and my Grandfather had a cabin on a river in western Washington. She dug up
(when you could do this) hundreds of ferns from the woods and planted them in
the berm that ran down the front 'yard' on one side. The whole place was
surrounded by big trees and the river ran right past the front door. The front
yard was really a big outdoor living room with a fireplace and picnic table and
my Grandfather was always walking across that river in his waders with a huge
salmon.
My Nana and I used to explore and find fairy gardens in the underbrush. Usually
a violet and a toadstool were a good indication that fairies had been there.

Bonnie, sounds like you are made of the same kind of Grandmother stuff my Nana
was made out of.

Guppies! That's a good idea! A couple of fancy guppies...they can go without
a pump..right?

Yea, really. Cat starts finding treats in the mini-pond it will never hold
water. ;o) ~ jan

Leslie you need a pondsai. I don't think even guppies would make it for
long (without a LOT of maintenance) in 1/2 a CUP of water. ;o) ~ jan

More thanks is due to computer boy who some how sharpened them via
computer. I'm going to have to play around some more. What a hobby this
fish/pond has become. Not only learning how to deal with fish & ponds, but
computers and cameras.

Speaking of fish, did surgery on one (not pictured) yesterday, had a
lymphocyte (I think) on it's tail. Removed it from tank, scrapped the white
zit looking thing off and iodine it. Looks much better today. ~ jan

Well...I was thinking a little bigger than 1/2 cup.....maybe 3+......possibly
more than that..

I saw the fairy garden picture on Jan's site and have decided I would
like to make one in spring. I've already got the large round pot trays
and grow several plants I could put in. My question is, would it be
possible to add a couple of very small fish to the pond portion
without having to do anything special regarding filtering, etc. It
would be located outside, sheltered somewhat from weather.
I can omit the fish if not feasible. Also, I would make the "pond" big
enough so that any tiny fish would have a good environment.
Thanks.
Sandra
p.s. Has anyone had luck drilling a hole in a clay pot tray without it
breaking?

|Bonnie,
|
|I know you directed your question to Jan but the question, 'How do
you contain
|them' tickled my fancy and Jan saw a fairy garden at my house, added
some
|twists and made it really cute.
|
|Take one large and flat container with a drain hole. Or line a
container with
|gravel.
|Add soil.

|Plant with little plants. Herbs are good, if you keep them clipped.
{Jan, what
|have you used for plants?}

|In the spring I like to use Johnny Jump-ups.
|Now decorate - the fun part!
|
|Some ideas ~
|Use small gravel to make paths.
|Sink a small dark bowl for a pond (of course) Jan had one of her boys
make one
|in art class.
|Float duckweed in the pond for lily pads, one lilac blossom makes a
lovely lily
|bloom.
|Hit the craft store and find tiny little clay pots, dragonflies,
frogs,
|ladybugs, glass pebbles, fairy figures, bird houses, garden tools,
little
|picket fences (I'm a dangerous woman at the craft store)....
|Add pretty sea shells.
|If your fairy garden is big enough some craft stores sell little
greenhouses
|and garden benches.
|You can make fairy furniture with twigs, twine and glue on dried
flowers.
|
|If you provide a serene fairy garden the fairies will never leave :-)

Lori,
It's on page 4 of Jan's Pond pics. Really cute. I'm wondering if I
could make one up and have it live. I didn't do to well when I
attempted Bonsai.

That is way way too cute. I am in love. I want to do one!!! I never thought
of something like that. It is so fantastic. I am a crafts person so I see
something I need to copy it and now I just know I will become obsessed!!!

Oh, well..... of course, typical ponder syndrome. Gotta have a bigger pond
then the next guy, even in the fairy garden. ;o) ~ jan

Now let's see, K30, what else can we assimilate this group into doing? I do
believe we have them under our spell. <beg> ~ jan

Lori,

Thank you. Now just one question, do you have children?

A normal ponder names their children after Koi (and boy are those hard to
pronounce).
An obsessed ponder forgets to have children.

Why I asked. ;o)
