The only thing that surprises me is that someone is still attempting
to spread this type of silly rumour in this group. We have seen it
sooo many times before.

My gosh, no flame intended (I'm an EOS user myself) but PLEASE don't write
in ALL CAPS. It makes your post rather hard to read. BTW, I don't think
NIKON's lens mount is lacking for strength. If it were, I don't think they'd
have the professional consumer base they have now. Now the other stuff--
well, that has always been one of Canon EF lens users' criticisms on Nikon.
Let's see if we hear more about this rumor.

Based on Nikon's track record for the last 25 years, it's fairly safe
to bet that if they do introduce a new mount, they will also provide
an upgrade path for users of older lenses.

the lens would mount per se, you probably won't be able to transfer
any information with it, especially meter coupling with the body.

Well, I would call it just that...RUMOR...I just received the latest Nikon
Full Line catalog and they promote the mount compatability, strength and
versatility for the last 30+ years. Sure doesn't sound like they have any
intention of changing it.
Personally, I can't see any reason for change...It is a very strong secure
mount and passes plenty of info from the lens to camera.

and camera body can barely talk to eachother, and my body can only tell the
flash it is time to fire. And my hand-held meter, why, I actually have to
push the button twice to get incident ambiant and flash readings, and then I
have to manually turn the little buttons on the camera and focus through that
little glass window.
Nikon did its followers a great service by staying with the F mount. For a
lot of us, it works, so why should we change it. I thought of buying an 8008
when they came out, but instead I put those dollars into stuff that would
really improve my picture taking. I bought a medium format camera. And heck,
it doesn't even have a meter.
And to really prove I'm biggoted against technology, at home I listen to my
reel to reel playing through my vacuum tube stereo. I don't have a CD player
yet, but I will get one as soon as they make one that offers a significant
USEFUL improvement over what it replaced. I'm only saying this because too
many people throw away things because someone else told them they were nothing
w/o the very latest and best available. Just be honest with yourself.

A few years ago I seem to remember that Canon changed the size of
their lens mount. It caused quite a negative reaction because of the
loss of compatability.
However I read somewhere at near the time that the major reason was
to get their lens mount openning up to the best minimum, or optimal
diameter for 35mm lenses. I think they were about 5mm too small a
diameter. I think Nikon was 2mm smaller than the optimum and because
of their large pro base didnot want to make a change.
So Canon took the plunge and if my memory is correct (yea right)
they should, at least in theory, be able to make 'better lenses'
than Nikon. If that will make a difference in photos for the masses
who knows. If it will be true. Who knows. Will Nikon change mounts?
I can't say.
Does anyone remember such an article and can they clarify???

Noct-Nikkor f1.0 ! I think they can't now do that on the old mount since it's
insufficient, i.e. not enough light can pass through it to make such a lens.
Also, the AF feature probably is hard to realize in such a beast ?
But if some day AF Noct 1.0 comes, I wouldn't hesitate buying it at once.

Well, the funny thing is that this rumour started when Canon pleased all
the FD lens owners by introducing the EF mount. Why on earth Canon's stupid
move should be a problem for Nikon owners I don't know.

Yes, Canon stated that the change was because the FD mount was 'too small'.
I wonder about that myself, but I've not yet had a chance to measure up
FD and EF mounts.
The electronics bit. 4 wires is all you need to do anything if you get
you electronics right. Infact you can do it with 1 wire, plus the body.
On the mech side of things, 3 things count. 1) Back distance 2) Diameters
of flange and opening 3) Flange type.
Back distance. The greater the back distance, the worst things are for
short fl lenses, and the longer the fl you will have to go to a retro-
focus design. Once you have enough room for shutter and mirror, any extra
is a loss. The FD is a 50mm BD, and that is realy too big.
Diameter. More is better. The bigger the opening, the bigger and longer
the lens that has an un-obstructed path to the film. The down is it means
bigger mirror unless youwill put up with viewfinder fall-off andmetering
odities. Also the bigger the OD of the mount, the lower the forces on
it, as it has a bigger base to generate the required moments.
Type. The FD breech lock is a clear winner, anything else is a crock. It
is the only way to get a solid lock-up, other than screw thread. Doing
lens changes in a hurry with out worring about cross threading is not
something I miss. All the baynet designs ( EF, Nikon and most every one
else ) need clearance to enable you to use it, otherwise it would bind
solid. This clearance is taken up by springs, so once the forces exceed
the spring force your mount goes out of alignment. :-( Also the main
faces of mount and lens rub of each other as you mount and dismount the
lens, causing wear and loss of precission.

The Norita Graflex (A 120 SLR) was supposed to be designed by the fellow that
designed the Nikon F. Insteresting thing was that the lens mount is just like
the Canon FD mount. Did he learn something on the Nikon F (before I get flamed,
I am a Nikon User, and I have never had any trouble with the lens mount)?
