I found myself intruigued with the works of Cindy Sherman
and Joyce Tenneson and the whole concept and challenge
of self portrait artistry. This lead me to begin
experimenting with self portraits myself.
I thought it would be interesting to see if there were other
self portrait artists out there and if so would be
interested in seeing their work.
I look forward to your responses and posts on this subject
matter.

I enjoy Cindy Sherman and get a bit of a kick out of her sense of humor.
Question: How do you work the lighting for you self-portraits, especially
when you are not facing the camera? Is there a second person helping?
TIA
John Stewart
a lot of interesting images, some well done, I think that
many of the double exposures, composites, digital layers
whatever clutter up and basically ruin a decent composition,
some look like accidents, not planned. I mean you have a
nicely planned image, but then there is another stuck in
it. I think it is hard to compose for an image that is in
your head and not in front of the lens.
I like cigarette break, nice S curve, good hands, the face
is turned either too far or not far enough, the lighting is
much too contrasty, that sharp shadow of the breast is like
a hole in the picture, the chest is washed out.
I liked haunting hands too, but having two ghost images
confuses me, maybe I'm just confused, but the main image is
cool with the cloud effect, the drape of the toga, the hand
spread, a broken rule that works.
strangest dream didn't work for me, the main or brightest
image was too stark, I liked the lower image semi sitting
(but where is that hand going???) and the mystery woman in
the background, interest, (I like hats) but the light on the
face is so stark and in the low res scan the nose seems
distorted by it.
smooth melody is very nicely done, again good s curve and
much better lighting.
contortion didn't work, the light is on the butt and it
seems like a flesh icecream cone. Crop out the butt and you
have and interesting composition of the legs and arms.
Liquid silk, I think you have some interesting things going
on here, I'd like you to continue this sort of thing,
concentrate on the curves and shapes of the sheer cloth,
move in closer, make it a surprize that there is a bod there
at all, composition would be cool if it was just a few folds
of silk and leave the viewer to realise that there is a
bellybutton or nape of the back whatever...
not bad...
