I'm planning to open a professional portrait studio in Cairo. The market in
Egypt is not well developed and there is a good potential for extra ordinary
portraits, as opposed to the typical "Say cheese" ones. Should I focus on
the high end of the market and charge high, or is it better to charge normal
rates and go after the already crowded mass market.

Any suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks,

Hani

if this is your start of putting together a studio in cairo, then your in
trouble............but my suggestion would to be go after the high end if you
are able to do that type of work..................

I think you have answered your own question.

If you can work with the high end, then you will enjoy more artistic
satisfaction.

There seems to be two profitable markets, high end or low, the middle ground
is where most of the competition is.

the low end requires a high investment in equipment. the high end requires
an investment in social skills and situation.

Hani,

Good advice for any business is to be cautious and start small. What you
want to do is produce much better work than your competitors for more or
less the same price or maybe a little more. Once you have a steady stream
of revenue, you can experiment with raising your prices and testing the
demand at each price level.

Think about it this way: if you enter the market at the high end, you're
going to be competing with people who are probably at least as good as you
are and who have established reputations. There may not be room in that
market for newcomer. But if you price yourself lower, you'll be competing
with people who probably aren't as good as you are. It'll be much easier
for you to get business that way, and as your reputation grows, you can
raise your prices until you reach a comfortable level.
