I'm heading to the Outer Banks on the North Carolina coast in early October.
Assuming I don't get swept away by an a hurricanes I will be taking alot of
pictures...land/seascape, portrait, candid, action, you name it...
Any tips for beach shots? I have polarizing and 81B filters. How does all
the extra light and glare affect the metering?

The glare will cause you to take underexposed shots if you meter directly
off the scene and a large portion of the picture is overly bright. Look for
something medium toned and meter off that to get a starting point. The
polarizer will be a great asset. I would also suggest using a UV filter if
you don't already to protect your lens from blowing sand.
Enjoy your trip!

The Outer Banks is a wonderful place to shoot. Some suggested sites are
as follows:

1. Jockey's Ridge near Nags Head - An enormous sand dune. Get there
early before the tourists trample the sand. From the top, you have
great views of the sound and the ocean, plus the sand patterns mixed
with slight vegetation make great compositions.

2. Wanchese Fishing Village on Roanoke Island - Again, get there early
and catch the fishing vessel's heading out to sea. Near the public boat
ramp you'll find a small dirt road leading thru a scrapyard to a dock
(you'll be trespassing but I've had no problems doing it). From this
vantage point, the morning boats head out right in front of the sun.
Great sillouette opportunities.

3. Nature Conservancy site - Around mile post 9 or so; look for brown
sign. A surprisingly interesting forested area. In October, leaves
could be changing so colors could be great. Apparently, this hilly land
is similar to Jockey's Ridge excepts it's forested.

4. Fishing Piers - Jenette's in Nags Head, US Coast Guard's in Duck,
Kitty Hawk Pier.

5. Whalebone Club and Corolla Lighthouse, Corolla.

It's easy finding great places to shoot. Good luck!

I am going to the Outer Banks at the end of October. I 'll be camping near the
Frisco and Buxton area. If you would not mind letting me know what you find,
I would appreciate it. Cape Hatteras lighthouse could be a great oppurtunity
at the right times. The Pamlico Sound side has a great deal of marshes that
show promise.

thanx

There is a wildlife refuge in the outer banks area just south of Nags Head. Lot's
of birds, however in October many will have migrated. There are also wild hourses
more to the north, but some on Ocracoke island as well. There is no shortage of
lighthouses Hatteras being the most famous. If you are camping at Frisco Woods?
There are some really nice wooded spots in that campground, and access to the sound
right there.

The cool thing about the outer banks is you can get sunrise AND sunset shots over
water. October is also prime windsurfing time. Bring zip lock bags and such to
keep the sand out of the cameras as much as possible. It can be really windy, and
blowing sand is a problem for cameras. You can climb the stairs of Hatteras
lighthouse (or you could last time I was there) and that makes for really cool
photo's. You can pay for plane rides (or at least that available in the summer
months).

The dunes at Kitty Hawk are really fun. This time of year they should be fairly
empty. If want to eat at a good seafood place (most are good) Aweful Aurthers is
at mile post 6 on the Ocean Side in Nags Head. Great food, cool shirts too. In
Hatteras you can show up at the Dock at noon, and around 4-5 and photograph the
days catch. Sometimes they catch some pretty huge fish (like Shark, or Marlin).

My wife and I LOVE the Outer Banks, and it is definately one thing we miss being
now based out of Colorado.

Have fun

Ron
