1. Jockey's Ridge near Nags Head - An enormous sand dune. Get there
early before the tourists trample the sand. From the top, you have
great views of the sound and the ocean, plus the sand patterns mixed
with slight vegetation make great compositions.
2. Wanchese Fishing Village on Roanoke Island - Again, get there early
and catch the fishing vessel's heading out to sea. Near the public boat
ramp you'll find a small dirt road leading thru a scrapyard to a dock
(you'll be trespassing but I've had no problems doing it). From this
vantage point, the morning boats head out right in front of the sun.
Great sillouette opportunities.
3. Nature Conservancy site - Around mile post 9 or so; look for brown
sign. A surprisingly interesting forested area. In October, leaves
could be changing so colors could be great. Apparently, this hilly land
is similar to Jockey's Ridge excepts it's forested.
4. Fishing Piers - Jenette's in Nags Head, US Coast Guard's in Duck,
Kitty Hawk Pier.
5. Whalebone Club and Corolla Lighthouse, Corolla.
It's easy finding great places to shoot. Good luck!

The cool thing about the outer banks is you can get sunrise AND sunset shots over
water. October is also prime windsurfing time. Bring zip lock bags and such to
keep the sand out of the cameras as much as possible. It can be really windy, and
blowing sand is a problem for cameras. You can climb the stairs of Hatteras
lighthouse (or you could last time I was there) and that makes for really cool
photo's. You can pay for plane rides (or at least that available in the summer
months).
The dunes at Kitty Hawk are really fun. This time of year they should be fairly
empty. If want to eat at a good seafood place (most are good) Aweful Aurthers is
at mile post 6 on the Ocean Side in Nags Head. Great food, cool shirts too. In
Hatteras you can show up at the Dock at noon, and around 4-5 and photograph the
days catch. Sometimes they catch some pretty huge fish (like Shark, or Marlin).
My wife and I LOVE the Outer Banks, and it is definately one thing we miss being
now based out of Colorado.
Have fun
