I have a few questions for those who sell copies of their prints. I have
some (color) photographs of flowers that I think might have mass appeal. I
love taking them and everyone who has seen them has loved looking at them,
too. I thought perhaps I could sell some prints to offset the cost of my
hobby, at least a little.

If you've sold prints, I'd like to know:

1) How did you get started selling? Flea markets, craft fairs, online,
display somewhere, how?

2) What sizes do you sell the most of?

3) Just mount and overmat, or more (or less)?

4) What kind of pricing is fair for not an art print, but bright, colorful
flower/still life close-ups? $25 for an 8x12?

5) To title, date, and sign? On the front bottom edge or where?

Thanks. I appreciate everyone's input!

1) Those are good ideas. Looking at prints selling on ebay, it is difficult
to make a profit. A lot of the auctions close without any bid.
2 & 3) many artists put mats on their prints. They must buy matboard in
quantity and cut it themselves. I won an auction at $15.00. It was a double
matted print with backboard (ready to frame) from the artist that is 11x14.
Hard to believe they're making much of a profit on it. If you mat it, be
sure to allow it to fit a standard sized frame.
4) Too much. It's got to be cheap, cheap, cheap! You got to work in quantity
to get the price down! Unless you got something that's a hit with the crowd,
you'll have to keep the price in the $10 range for that size.
5) Put a copyright note on it, for example, (C) 2002. Amy Hoy outside the
image area. You can sign your work if you want. I don't think it is
necessary with photographs as much as prints from paintings, drawings...

IMHO! John

Unfortunately, quantity is something that a sole proprietor can't really
handle. Even at $25 each, it's pretty much impossible to make money on
a print.

I think the only way to make any money at all by selling small numbers
of prints is to offer prints that really attract buyers, such that they
are willing to pay a fair amount of money for them. I'm not sure that
photographs of flowers are in this category, unless they are very
unusual. It's just too easy to find photos of flowers already.

Ppl still like nice sunsets or the familiar place that you managed to caught
in some special light.
