Hi,

I have a Canon Eos 100 and a Canon EOS 10D, I'm looking for a good
(decent/affordable) lens for portrait work. I normally do landscapes.
Something around £200 - £300 new or second-hand.

Anyone got any recommendations ?

Thanks.

Definitely 85mm f/1.8. It will give you 85*1.6 (~135) equivalent
on your 10D, thus keeping it still in the "portrait" range, and
it's an outstanding lens.

I'd get either the 85 f/1.8 or the 100 f/2 (I have the 85 plus a 100 macro).

Unless you want a zoom, in which case the 28-105 or 28-135 IS would be good
choices as well. I think these all fit within your budget.

100 f2 or 28-105 f3.5-4.5. Both available well under your budget, new or
used. Or the 28-135 f4-5.6 IS which barely exceeds your top price new, and
can probably be had cheaper used. I use both the 100 and the 28-135 as
portrait lenses, and have been very happy with the results. My wife's
cousin uses the 28-135 on his 10D with great results, too.

What's perfect for portraits on the 10D isn't perfect on the 100. I'm
one of those who strongly favor the 85mm length for portaits, and the
Canon 85/1.8 fits the bill just perfectly. But on the 10D, that's
about 135mm, which while still in the portrait lens range is at the
very limit. If you lack generous working space, the longer length may
be a problem. A 50/1.8 or the 50/1.4 makes a very nice portrait lens
on the 10D, but would be short for single person portraits on the 100.

In zooms, the Canon 24-85, 28-105/3.5-4.5, and the 28-135IS would all
be decent portrait lenses, although I'd pick the 28-105 for small
size, faster focussing, and wider max aperture at the 85-100 portrait
lengths.

One reason I'm (im)patiently waiting for the guys at Canon to bring out a
full size sensor in a camera that is remotely affordable, which $8000 ain't!

The extra for the 50/1.8 isn't exactly a huge amount, why not a 85/1.8
*and* a 50/1.8? That way you've got good fast normal and short-portrait
lenses for the 100, good fast short-portrait and long-portrait lenses
for the 10D, and the added advantage that you can stick the 85/1.8 on
the 100 and the 50/1.8 on the 10D and use both bodies when doing
portraits if you want to try out different films in the same session.
