Dallas, your portrait would look great in D30 promotional literature. You might considered selling it for this purpose.

I always find it amazing that when male photographers take a "self portrait"
it is almost always a shot of them holding their camera up at eye level, or
at least holding their camera in the photo. On the other hand I have seen a
large number of female photographers produce very artful, insightful self
portraits without any camera equipment visible at all. Do we male
photographers feel the need to define ourselves by our camera or is just a
necessity to prove that we are actually photographers.

He-he...I'll improve on the shot later, but it will involve dragging out my
tripod...

Boy, you and your husband sure look young!

I'm curious about your first name, Charo. Is it a nick-name or a shortening?
The reason I ask is because in South Africa it's a colloquialism given to
the local Indian population! It's a sort of slang but the middle-class
Indians use it to describe themselves quite often. They have "Charro" for
themselves, "Wittous" (pronounced "Vittos") for us whiteys, "Colouredous"
for the coloureds, and "Peckyous" for Africans.

The suffix "ous" (just like saying the letter O in plural) is derived from
the Afrikaans "Ouens" for men, or fellows. The Charrous would refer to the
"charred" look of Indian skin (in other words they've been burned black by
the sun). "Wit" is Afrikaans for "white", hence we are "wittous". I haven't
a clue how they came to name African people "Peckyous".

Anyway, I'm sure you're more than fascinated by the above...so I'll shut up
now! :-)

Congrats on the job, BTW.

It is my full first name, I have no nicknames! Well, except for "enchanting

"Charro" and "Charo" are both slang words in certain parts of Mexico, from
what I understand. I believe "Charo" ( in northeastern regions of Mexico?)
is slang for "artist", while in other areas it is slang for those guys that
go door to door singing and playing maracas for money! Of course, "Charro"
in proper Spanish means "cowboy". I think.

"Charo" and "Charro" are also Spanish female first names.

In my case, it is a Spanish name that was given to me by my
Portuguese/Chinese/Hawaiian father, who *probably* heard of the guitarist
Charo (who is well known in the states, but probably nowhere else), and
thought it was a cool name. That's my theory anyway. My father died before
I could find out why he chose that name! Perhaps "Charo" is also a
Portuguese name?

If you lived in the US, you would know how much crap I catch for having the
same name as a very buxom, petite, fiery redheaded guitarist/singer whose
catch phrase is "Cootchie-cootchie-coo"!!

I have the MR-3 (can you believe those bloody things cost $50.00?) but it
usually lives on my FM2n/MD-12 combo. I plan on picking up the firing rate
converter for the MD-4 which also gives a vertical release.

Don't listen to him, Charo. You look swell with those glasses, and that's
probably the way people know you.
However, a polariser may have reduced the reflection (the reflection is not
part of your personality, is it?)
Or a slightly different angle may have too.

John's picture is perfect proof that reflection in glasses can add to a
picture. In fact, if there was a bit more reflection in the right glass
(left in pic) we wouldn't see that John is looking at the camera. Which
costs him 0.01 point, leaving him with only 9.99 out of 10.

David, nice photos on your site! Looks like you have some really
wonderful vintage cameras, especially the old Contax rangefinders.
Have you shot any of the recent Zeiss stuff on their G series
cameras? I'm a huge fan of the 21mm f/2.8 Biogon, and I wondered if
you have compared it to your 21mm f/4.5.

By the way, was the "mosque" photo, at the bottom center of your
thumbnails taken with a 21mm? This was my favorite shot of that set.

| I'm curious about your first name, Charo. Is it a nick-name or a

| The reason I ask is because in South Africa it's a colloquialism given to

| Indians use it to describe themselves quite often. They have "Charro" for
| themselves, "Wittous" (pronounced "Vittos") for us whiteys, "Colouredous"

| The suffix "ous" (just like saying the letter O in plural) is derived from

Thanks. I really need to update that site. I did own a Contax G2 for a
couple years. I didn't have the 21mm f/2.8 but I was able to borrow one for
a few days. A very fine lens, equal in performance to the old f/4.5 but (of
course) faster. I eventually sold the G2 kit not because I was unhappy with
it but simply 'cuz I had too much stuff and something had to go. :-) I
currently have a pair of Contax SLRs and like 'em a lot (and once again have
too much stuff).

I used an old Leitz 35mm Summaron screwmount lens for that pic. It's
acquired a bit of haze over the years, which give pics shot with it an
interesting sharp/soft look. Not sure if I want to get it cleaned or not.

Speaking of websites and self-portraits - sometimes the realization
that you have one fame left spawns an idea best left undone. Anyway,
I had finished fishing for the day, had one frame left, propped the XA
on the tailgate of the truck and got this one:

Originally a colour print - it was scanned and I did the digital thing
with it. I dunno, reminds me of a poor imitation of Pancho Villa.

Could it be that a self-portrait involves taking a picture of yourself, and
that necessarily involves having a camera with you? And that it is much easier
when you see what the camera sees? Loosen up, John. I'm an accountant and I
don't pose with my adding machine.

Hmmm... growing a beard and going to Afghanistan sounds like a formula for
trouble. :)

The most difficult time is the first month. There is a point when the
stubble gets long enough to behave like a needle but not long enough to
behave like a hair. Most people bail right about then. If you survive that
stage it's all down hill from there.

Depends on which part of the 'country' you go through and how long your beard is.

Exactly. That's exactly it. After one to two weeks I'm ready to pull my hair out, by a month (my longest) I must shave. I feel
free as an eagle after that 1st shave. Someone told me olive oil helps both the itching and the beard's condition when it becomes
longer. Anyway, thanks to the both of you for entertaining my question. I must go toss my razors right now. :)

Yep. Also, I hear that they have a new Mach 3 system that allows one to shave against the grain without having to be as careful and
without the blades dulling as quickly. I'm certain it will require us to buy another shaver handle thingamajig because every time
they introduce a new 'technology' I must purchase the matching shaver.
