D-Mac, aka "Douglas St. James MacDonald" has once again graced us with
a fine example of his Photoshop mastery.

Check out these two pics from his current EBAY auctions:

http://www.brisbaneweddingphotographers.com/e-bay/home-bch-pano.jpg
http://www.brisbaneweddingphotographers.com/e-bay/the-gorge.jpg

Getting the two children to smile with the exact same expressions on
their faces must've been tough. But not as tough as that selective
DOF effect at the top. One can hardly even tell where the brush
strokes were made.

"Tickle your ass with a 50px feather, D-Mac?"

I won't comment on the ethics of pasting images onto other images to
represent the actual photograph being auctioned.

Bret I agree that you can see the "brush strokes" above the girl on
the righ and the top edge of the mat. But I don't think he pasted the
image on the mat board. But hard to tell. I am sure that he used a
blur tool to "remove" the distracting background. Just not very well.

If D-mac did those images and they are as sharp "in person" as they
are on the monitor, all I can say is wow, nice work. But I'll never
see them. I don't buy images.

Gee, you're picking on him more than me, nowadays.. But did you not
also notice a little 'issue' with that first 'poster'?

Look carefully at the left side of the sky, note the clouds and
waves. Can you say 'vertical mirror'? I wonder how obvious the seam
is, up close, given how obvious it is from what is effectively a
thumbnail..

So that's what Doug does if his scene isn't wide enough for a pano -
just makes one up! Is that 'photography'? Me, I prefer real skies,
and if it doesn't quite cut the mustard, I try again.

I loaded each into a separate page using FireFox, and switched between
the tabs to view one after the other, so I could do fast A-B comparisons
between the images.

The kids, black frame, and background are identical in both, 'cept for a
small amount of sharpening in the second. Only the views changed, so he
has simply pasted in the different images he's selling.

I have to say I don't think it amounts to anything worth commenting on,
it's simply an easier way of displaying some number of images than
getting the kids to hold each one - and maybe it avoids having to
actually print each at that size until (and if) he gets an order for one.

Note I am not supporting D-Mac here, only commenting on the facts. He
bad-mouthed me pretty badly some months ago, and when I called him on it
he disappeared completely until just recently. I have no wish to
correspond with him in any way.

If he was simply displaying his pics on a website I might agree with
you. Representing this way in an auction, however, borders on Fraud.

I think that if you are auctioning off a framed or mounted pic and you
show a photo of someone holding that pic, the buyer should have an
expectation that the pic being displayed is the pic he is bidding on.
Otherwise, a disclaimer should be in order. That shouldn't be
terrible difficult for D-Mac, Master of the Diclaimer. "Caveat
Emptor" should apply for anything that fraud is selling.

Wow, I missed that. More testament to D-Mac's Photoshop Mastery!

In the auction for that pic D-Mac writes, "The scene is Home Beach on
Nth Stradbroke Island, off the coast of Queensland. One of the Moreton
Bay Islands popular with Brisbane dwellers and a small but growing
number of International tourists. This is the scene that greeted me as
I woke one Sunday morning after a violent storm had raged through the
night."

Perhaps the storm had blown a giant mirror out on the beach?

I could never be jealous of a fraud and a faker.

And you aren't selling only a picture. As it says on your auction:
"On Sale here is an original canvas print displayed on a 3D, plaqued
mount."

So when you post a photo of two girls holding up a mounted photo the
implication is that you are showing the photo being bid on.
If it isn't, you're a fraud and a faker.

Go Bret... Don't hold back mate... Tell us what you really think. As if
anyone actually cares what your think. It makes entertaining reading for
your all your friends, I guess. (both of them). One of 'em (Mark Thomas)
blundered big time in aus.photo with probably the best demonstration I've
seen yet of spouting off about what he hasn't got a clue about. Here you go
joining him. Good luck!

Gallery programs, on-line albums and PBASE use templates to display your
images. Some of them (shock Horror) even display them for sale in template
pages. The fraudsters!

The pic of two of my grand daughters is a quick template I used to display a
number of images. Nothing fraudulent. Because of the quality of the actual
ENLARGED DIGITAL PRINTS I sell. My buyers thought the prints were stunning
in the first magnitude. My buyers thought the eBay images didn't do justice
to the fantastic quality of the actual prints... You know, the ones Bret?
Pasted into the template? The ones you and Mark Thomas say I can't enlarge
with my algorithm?

Colin's seen an enlargement from my old printer just before I traded it on
the 60" wide machine, I sent him one. Big jump in quality now but hey, the
old one was pretty good too. Colin knows but he ain't saying anything 'cause
I did to him what you are doing to me. What goes around, comes around, I
guess. Sorry Colin!

Hey Bretie boy... What's happened to the last attack(s) on me when you made
a total idiot out of yourself claiming I couldn't enlarge images like this?
Silent on that one now are we? Well, well, well. You really are coming out
of your shell, aren't you? When are you going silent on this one?

Seriously Bret, it takes a total idiot not to see two pictures, one on top
of the other with everything identical except the pic being sold. But
then... Bret Douglas is just plain stupid all over, isn't he?

Can't see the trees for the forest. FOUR!!!! Duck, Bret. Stick to carrying
ladies golf clubs around mate, you can't cut it as a Photographer so don't
get jealous of me, I never wanted to a Golf Caddie either, you know? Jealous
as all hell that with all your stock of "cropped and resized" pictures, you
can't sell 'em. My, My... Wonder why? Eat your heart out Bret.

Never say I didn't offer you help. Ouch... The bastard bit me. We shoot dogs
that do that in Aussie. America just make 'em get another credit card to buy
more camera gear for taking worthless pictures they can't sell. Excellent
punishment. Go buy a Leica R9 and a kit of lenses. Hey, Bret... Do you
remember last year when I cut up all my credit cards and posted a pic of it?
Hell man, you could have bought Adorama with that lot! Ha, ha, ha. Dirt bag,
sucker!

Get a life Bret... Snowed in while I cruise amongst tropical islands. Don't
worry mate, Tamika (the one on the left) will send you some of her happy
snaps. I'll organize it if you like, she loves photography and sending her
pics to pen friends all over the world. True, she might put you to shame
with some of her FZ50 shots at night or maybe her full frame composures but
hey, she will never rubbish you. She has way to many manners to behave like
you do. A lot of people could learn from her attitude. But then you don't
learn anything, do you?

Everything is identical save the contents of the matte board.

Jealous bitch!
Thanks incidentally, for the opportunity to further promote my incredibly
beautiful work.

Bret Hogan's question via eBay Australia.

Why did you mirror the left side of the pic, faker?
09-Feb-07 A: Thank you for your question Bret. I'm surprised you remember
my nickname. It's over 30 years since I painted the piece which gave me the
name. Shipping to Tennessee will cost you $195 US in addition to the
purchase price. I seem to recall you have commented on my work many times
before. Thank you for your flattering remarks.

You are right. Sadly, not everyone who picks up a camera can create
photographs like these, as you know by your own attempts. If you have no
imagination, you are better off buying your art from someone like me. I can
offer you substantial discounts if you wish to line the walls of the cabin
you call home, with glorious, Australian photographic art on canvas.

I mirrored the left side of the picture to turn a relatively mundane
scene into one of breathtaking beauty. This particular canvas print is my
most popular out of the entire Straddle 2007 collection. 2nd most popular is
item # 170071613634 which you passed comment on last year, I believe.

The concept of my canvas prints is to merge art and Photography. They
are almost always my interpretation of the scene, not necessarily a faithful
reproduction of it. In the Home Beach scene, if you block the left side with
a piece of paper, you will see how effective mirroring part of the image to
"grow" it, actually is. Accompanying each print is a full description of how
the scene was composed and the print created.

The canvas itself is Poly/cotton, made in USA. Vacuum bonded to MDF
and stepped 12mm above another MDF backing board coloured with a neutral
"soft Black". The centre is removed for light weight.

When you purchase one of my Giclée canvas prints, you can consider it
an heirloom, able to be handed down from generation to generation. Simply
the finest means available to preserve memories or moments in time, like the
home beach scene. Good luck and Happy bidding!

Of course he did. Just look at the second image.
It is absolutely identical, save for the image pasted onto the "grey thing"
the girls are holding.

I noticed that, too. Surely anyone buying a huge print of this would have
to, at some point, notice this...
When you're playing around for fun, you can do whatever you like. But when
you sell an image pretending that it represents the real scene (as the
description clearly implies)...that's just really...extraordinarily...lame.

LOL. Anyone who ever used Ebay more than twice knows how to recognize fake
comments. Comments like that are usually written by seller himself. Or by some
"aunt Gladys" who strongly believes that an out-of-focus 8x6 picture of her
cat's tail is "gorgeous" just because it is bigger that 4x6. And anything larger
than 8x6 falls into the "Absolutely Gorgeous" category.

He goes into his lathered-up attack mode attacking me, Mark T., Colin
and anybody else he can think of that is out to get him (in his

Here's a couple of points for ya, D-Mac, just to clear things up.
1. I'm not a caddie. Tiger Woods caddie, a Kiwi, makes more cash in
a week than you ever have in your life. Hell, he probably takes
better pics than you do, as well.
2. Any fool can take a postcard size print and enlarge it to poster
size, but only a fool would claim that he can do it without losing
quality.
3. Nobody is jealous of you, D-Mac. You are just a bitter old man
who has no talent for taking a decent photograph. You try to cover
your inadequacies with Photoshop trickery that a 7th grader would be
embarrassed to show.
4. Nobody believes your bullshit about how your pics are in galleries
all over Australia or how much money you make on land deals. You live
on a fuckin boat and try to sell your pathetic, shitty pics at a booth
on the pier on the weekends. You wedding pics, like all your photos,
are an embarrassment.
5. I know many people of wealth (millionaires). I've never heard any
of them brag about how much money they make as you often do. But then
you live on a fuckin boat.
6. The Panasonic (oops, I meant "Leica) FZ50 isn't in the same league
with the Canon 20D.
7. If you offer an item for auction and post a photo of that item, it
is assumed that the photo is an accurate representation of that item,
not the result of some obvious Photoshop trickery. Doing otherwise is
fraudulent. It would be like me advertising my old Altima for sale
and posting pics of a brand new Maybach.
8. We've tried to educate you about everything from taking photos to
using Photoshop, but you are too stupid to learn. You talk big about
things you don't know jack shit about, like JPG quality vs. RAW.
Remember that one, Ryadia? When called on your BS you always run
away, change your screen name, and then slink back for more
punishment.

9. I get along with almost everyone, but I can't stand a liar, a
thief, or a fraud.
Sucks to be you, D-Mac.

In your case, I kinda doubt it. One must either question the
authenticity of those comments or the eyesight of the person who gave
them.

After all, your pics do suck.

As demonstrated by you many times in the past... You don't have any
credentials to make such comments.

It's a very sad day when a gutter dwelling cretin like you can fan so many
other oddballs into a mob. It must have been how the lynch mobs worked in
the old west. Incidentally... Why are you still wasting our oxygen by
continually breathing when I told you to stop it?

If you actually read the stupidity in your comment, you'd probably put your
head down the dunny and flush it out of embarrassment. You really thought
you'd get some sort of advantage over me with your eBay question, didn't
you?

That's the difference between you and a successful Photographer like me. I
take advantage of dick heads trying to act smart and you don't know how to
counter it. You really are pathetic, Hogan. Why don't you just give up on
it?

Eighty people - without any prompting or request from me, left very generous
comments about me, the photographs they bought and my wedding photography.
The last four related to two pictures you see on eBay right now, that have
already sold.

And what about the Pelicans at dusk I posted here last October?
"Inappropriate use of flash" I think was the comment. Hell Bret, I knew it
was a sure fire seller the minute you canned it... And it is! If you
actually had a clue about why people buy, you might get somewhere in life...
Probably too late for you.

If you are to be believed (hopefully no one will bother after this thread)
the people who shelled out their cash currency over eBay and personally
collected their works of art, are either blind or stupid? All the people who
buy my works are stupid or blind too? I think it's you who are the stupid
one, Bret. Not a clue about what you are doing or why.

You and a couple of oddballs from your mob (for want of a better
description) are obsessed with reproducing your idea of a faithful rendition
of a scene when photography itself is not capable of doing that.

Oh... Arrr That's a beautiful photo Bret. You must be so proud of yourself
and only cropped by 90% too. Magnificent stuff Bret. How long in Photoshop?
Oh, only 2 hours, how wonderful.

When you first saw my "Lightning on the beach" shot for Shootin, even that
deliberately obvious work, fooled you. It was then I discover you are all
piss and wind with no substance. You really thought I'd stood up on magnetic
sand in the middle of a lightning storm to take that picture?... Stupid,
stupid Bret. For those interested:
http://www.pbase.com/shootin/image/27848862

I make fine art photographs and I make panorama photographs. I make "works
of art" from photographs as well as paint pictures and... I'm a Wedding
Photographer on Saturdays. I also exhibit my work on most Sundays at the
Cleveland craft markets in Southern Queensland (Australia). For 6 months of
the year I hold exhibitions of my work in regional cities.

I am probably a more productive Photographer at 63 than you ever have been
at anything in your entire life. I have two wide format photo printers
running 8 hours a day, printing mine and my client's enlargements using an
algorithm you and that oddball Thomas, beat the shit out of me over last
year and the year before, because YOU couldn't understand how it could be
done...

Here's a flash. Bret Hogan is too narrow minded to grasp new concepts and
independent or creative ideas.

If your attempts are not driven by jealousy, the Psychologist in our family
doesn't deserve the honours she got when she graduated in the top 10 of her
class. She did an analysis of you Brettie boy... and I gotta tell you it
ain't pretty. You really ought to get some help before you start using the
razor blades on your wrists mate.
Pathetic little insecure brat that you are. Get a life, trying to best me
ain't working.

Perhaps not, but a photograph can at least be well-composed, well-
exposed, in focus, and have level horizons. All of those qualities
seem to have eluded your grasp, judgng by your web gallery seen here:

This, from the guy who sells a pic which he mirrored the left half of

Then you claim that "this was the scene presented to me" that morning.

The good photographers don't need to gush on about their pics. The
photos speak for themselves. All of you pics just scream, "I suck!"
If you actually make money selling your shitty pics it is a testament
to your ability as a carnival barker, not as a photographer.

I'd rather take nice photos and let others enjoy them rather than take
godawful pics like you and profit from them.

Dream on. I don't know too many Psychologists worth their salt who
would attempt to diagnose someone online from their posts in a
newsgroup. It seems that every trait that you possess you try to label
me with.
One wonders what the brilliant Psychologist in your family would have
to say about you?

You are just a paranoid, insecure, neurotic. A bitter, sad old man.

Am I missing something and not recognizing these posts
as satire taken to a new level and thereby having a 'Duh'
moment.? These posts can't be serious ... but they sure
look serious.

Michael Crichton's 'Eaters of the Dead' got shelved under
biography in many libraries. Is this that sort of thing?
If so I have been well and truly had.

Hooh boy ... the thing I am missing is supposed to be

That would be charitable.

The last few posts slid under the kill file and I took
a look to see what all the broo-ha-ha was about. I _then_
looked at the beginning of the thread w/Google:_after_
posting the above: "Duh!"

I should know better.

BTW, If you only read the last five posts this thread

Yes it's satire, those are Annika's collection of dMac's worst pictures.
I'm assuming these crops I made:
<http://www.edgehill.net/1/?SC=go.php&DIR=Misc/photography/20d-fz50>
... are the comparison shots from dMac which he has already pulled. I
don't think Annika had to do any editing, I believe dMac actually posted
these in support of his claim that his Panasonic point-and-shoot camera
knocked the socks off a Canon 20D DSLR. The crops sure tell the story,
unbelieveable difference, the FZ-50 shows an INCREDIBLY noise reduced
glossy mush on the flower and the 20D shows every little hair on the
plant. I wouldn't have guessed the difference would be so ENORMOUS.
Reduce the whole image and the Panasonic looks more 'punchy' with more DOF:
http://www.pbase.com/photosbydouglas/image/74145675/large
http://www.pbase.com/photosbydouglas/image/74146002/large
... but look at the crop and WOW!

> If so I have been well and truly had.

Ha. I didn't realize it was satire at first either.

Strange way to respond. But if he thinks it funny, and offers no
denial, that's aas good as admission.

So just to verify, Matt Clara has now apparently admitted he was the
one to call Helen Silverberg by a *very* unpleasant name.

Also, he is stupid enough to think Helen is a sockpuppet of Annika's.

Oh, I'd imagine Kewpi's been there and been done... :)
Heck, if Kewpi shoots his mouth off anywhere with human beings physically in
the room, he's more than likely found himself on the mat with rather large
portions of his mouth "shot off" ...and bleeding. :) So if that's what you

I get accused of being a nazi, yet you seem to love resorting to racial
stereotypes at every hands turn, you did this a few years back as well if I
recall correctly, now if I may momentarily allow myself to stoop down to
your low level, I would say something along these lines:

Nope, just a little matter of personal privacy.
She doesn't like to be photographed. I've got plenty of pics of her
flipping me off when she saw the camera pointing at her.
The Mighty Jewel, on the other hand, loves being photographed. So I
guess you'll have to confine your insults to her.

Not too many people here have posted pics of their immediate families,
probably for the same reasons.

Also, I've worked pretty hard to build this online persona. I can't

As if you can judge someone from their online persona, anyway. We've
had this discussion many times before. I've met many people from
online through playing in golf tournaments and 95% of them are far
different that what I would expect from their online personas. Some
folks try to be consistent all the time, whether posting online or
conversing face-to-face. Other people assume certain traits online
that they may not show in person. So when I call Kewfi a "Nazi" or
Mark Morgan a "Penis Wrinkle" I am simply referring to their online
persona. For all I know they could be total opposites in person.

Having said all that, I do believe there are lines that shouldn't be

You've never heard me disparage D-Mac's wife, for example, cause I

Only in your estimation. Many posters here enjoy Bret's style, and
images. Don't ask me to 'prove' it, one only has to read the posts.

OTOH, your posts put you in the group that specializes in sniping from

Bret,

My "very disappointing" comment wasn't directed at you. It was directed at

Joseph, I owe you and this list an apology, but, then, so do you and
everybody else who has participated in this part of the thread. This macho
posturing has no place here, and I've participated in it. A long time ago,
I decided I would avoid threads that you and Douglas were in, just because
they degenerate to this level. Sometimes, it is not your fault, that's not
what I'm saying. But this is a photo newsgroup, not a "I'm tougher than you
are," or "I hate your country" group. Against my promise to myself, I let
myself get sucked into this and another thread and, frankly, I'm not happy
with myself. If you, Mark, Annika/Bret, Douglas, myself, and all the others
slinging crap around here would restrain ourselves, this would be a much
more useful place.
One reason us Americans react so strongly to things that you, your
countrymen, Douglas and his countrymen say is a sense of betrayal. We like
the Irish, we identify with them, and many of us trace our ancestry back to
that country. To be hated, unreasoningly, by someone we want to like is
hard to accept. It is a similar thing with the Aussies. We view them as
something like younger brothers, much like ourselves when we were young,
brash, loud, adventurous, and we admire that, both in ourselves and in them.
Americans have a tough place in the world, you and your politicians wanted
us to lead, to make the world safe, and it was a responsibility that we
weren't ready to accept. We don't have the social makeup to be an Empire,
or a world dominant power. But, time after time, we've been asked to step
in, like in Bosnia, and it gave our politicians the feeling that we had to
solve everything, and that we had the ability to do so. Maybe we do, maybe
we don't. It's not for me to say.
This is not a hand extended in friendship, or anything like that. It is
just a statement of the way things look, from my point of view.

Mine was mostly toungue-in-cheek, Skip. -While I do think I'd wax the floor
with Kewpi if it really came to that...I'm not a viiolent person at all. I
am capable of using my considerable strength and aggrtessiveness if I need
it, but that's not my tendency. Kewpi seems to think like a thug, and so my
reaction considered the audience. ;)

Actually, I only see Kewpi in echo, so it wasn't until Helen responded to
his post that talked smack against my 91 year old grandmother that I knew
much of what he was actually "contributing" to this thread.

My basic response is that I agree...that twits like Kewpi wouldn't have the
cajones to say anything even remotely resembling what he says here, were he
looking accross at nearly ANY of us. For that reason, I find him not only
dimj-witted, but cowardly and slinking as well. My tendency is to call
people's bluff, and in this case...whether he admits it or not, I think
Kewpi is a cowardly guy who snipes away behind his blanket of distance.

That's true, and I agree. I have Douglas Mac, Kewpi, ASAAR, Rita Dallas and
some others in my klink-file for that very reason. -It's too easy to be
pulled into crap. So ya, I'm guilty too.

After some searching, I found the post in question. Unlike your
posts, which are not archived, mine are all still intact. The reason
I couldn't remember calling your daughters "whores" is because I never
called them whores.

This is what I did write:

Yeah, but you gotta love the cheap hookers!

========================

You see, there is a difference.
Hookers do it as a business. Whores give it away.

Anyway, I'm sure I could find many worse things that you've said about
me, had your posts not all disappeared.

I used to really go after Bret in the old days...thinking he was a real
jerk. Sometimes he's still a jerk (me too, sometimes). But over the years
(Wow. It's actually been more than a few now...) I've realized that
underneath all that foul-mouthed wit and nastiness is a heart that isn't
nearly as cold as it seems. He'll hate me for saying it, and might even
chime in here to make sure his snappy insults remain true to the projected
persona...but he's not a bad guy. He's one of the most witty, goofy people
I've ever known, and is totally diferent from me in most ways
(Hmmm...meaning I'm boring, perhaps??)

Don't take anything too seriously or personally. He took to calling me
"Penis Wrinkle" for a long time, so I started calling him "Penis Wrinkle
Envy." After a while, you figure out when it's Bret...and when it's
"Annika" schtick. I don't always approve...but I don't throw him in the
klink file, either, because I know what he's doing, and it often isn't what
it appears. It's also a fact that his photography...whatever you think of
it...is MILES ahead of where it was 5 years ago. Figure out which
Bret/Annika side you're talking to, and it's easier to take.

I've suggested going easier on the apparent helplessness/hopelessness of
D-Mac...but I also understand why it's tough to resist.

I agree with you, the posturing bit is a load of bollocks not to be taken
seriously at all, I didn't start it, in fact I got involved in it only to
irritate Bret just to amuse myself for a few moments of idle time, I
couldn't get him to rise though. I made a comment alluding to his wife, then
I get some abuse from someone else, on top of that Mouth Organ comes in with
the same racial stereotyping racism disguised as humour he's used in the
past, so I figure, what the fuck, I can throw shit too, and I still have a
few moments of idle time to kill.
I shouldn't have reacted with the posts I made, but I wasn't being all
serious when I typed them either. I didn't expect anyone to be personally
wounded by it, which by the sound of it you are, for that I apologise.

I suggest you dig deeper and try to actually find out how the world has come
to be in the position it's in, some of the statements you've made there, are
laughably naive Hollywood like fantasy. I'm sorry but the image you have of
yourselves is just not borne out by the facts.

Before dismissing alternative point's of view, you may find it a real
eye-opener to read such books like Hegemony or Survival by Noam Chomsky or
Failed States, State of Denial by Bob Woodward or Killing Hope by William
Blum or Iraqi Confidential by Scott Ritter, Palestine - Peace Not Apartheid
by Jimmy Carter, I could go on and on. Before anyone dismisses these works
as leftwing nonsense, all you have to do is check the facts outlined in
these works, do a bit of research, the information is all readily available
(you are very fortunate to still have the information available) if you
just care to read it, especially on Hegemony or Survival, many topics dealt
with from 1950's onwards are now declassified documents that substantiate
the authors work. I shouldn't have to tell you either that all the authors
I've mentioned are Yanks, writing about their own country, god forbid I be
accused of "anti-Americanism" or being a "terrorist" yet again.

Negative. I champion fair play, no ad hominem attacks, personal abuse,
or downright insulting posts. And smartass remarks such as your previous.

Neither am I Helen Silverburg's champion, but I didn't stand for some
asshole calling her a whore either.

The trouble with usenet is that some types can't resist saying things
they wouldn't dare to face to face, yet somehow the anonymity brings out
the worst in them. Do you fit that scenario?

I remember, and I thank you Colin for your gallantness. Your kindness
remains unforgotten. There were quite a few who felt the same way you
do, and I am very thankful indeed and truly touched.

Joseph, what makes you think I haven't read at least some of the books on
that list? I'm not a right wing adherent, I think for myself. Woodward and
Carter both had salient points to make, and there's a lot to the idea that
Bush and his buddies have cocked things up in a stunning way. And before
you say the press only tells us what the govt. wants us to hear, remember
that Bob Woodward is a journalist, first.
But that's not my point. My points were that, in the first place, this is
not a place for the conversations that have been taking place here, and,
secondly, there is a reason, a valid one, for the strength of response that
English speaking, non American commentators get here. That's all. This
will be the last comment I make on the subject, and on this thread. I've
said all I need to say.

I believe I used the word "twit". Webster defines the word as "a silly
annoying person". I am the judge of what I find silly and annoying. And now
you join Bret in that category. Go lecture someone else. I find your
moralizing irrelevant.

To quote from a recent reply to one of my posts" Colin said " I champion

fair play, no ad hominem attacks, personal abuse, or downright insulting
posts. "

Sorry Colin. You are obviously a hypocrite, and comdemn others for snide
remarks, while being totally over the top with your own comments. You have
no credibilty now.

Thing like this quote from a recent post you made?

"You are just a cheap asshole, and you know what an asshole is? it's a
conduit for shit, which fits you perfectly."

You can, by all evidence, be a fat yankee or a fat redneck, and all
variants with "faggot" as well.

But you can't be a "redneck" and "yankee" at the same time.

Well, Doug, you are somewhat renowned for critical, and sometimes
Kewpie-like remarks, at least on this NG, so your post comes as no surprise.

Regarding the above quotes from my post, I should have added 'but if you
start it I'll finish it'. Kewpie started it with an incredibly
insulting remark toward someone I happen to like. Ironically, Kewpie's
problem is mine as well - Irish blood.

Perhaps that's a chink in my armor; I don't start these attacks, but I
am somewhat liable to reply in the same vein as the perpetrator. If
someone swings a punch at me, or people I like, I will swing back.
Turning the other cheek is not an option.

It all goes to show there are no winners, only losers, in slanging
matches.

True; you didn't stand for it and ... uh ... made some remarks!
Smartass ones, even! That'll show 'em!

Yup.

And so do all of us. It's the nature of the beast. No matter how hard
you wish, or even if you hold your mouth just right when you do it,
what you get is what everyone gets: a BIG RUSH OF SELF-RIGHTEOUS
ADRENALINE, and nothing more. If it pays off for you, fine; whatever
payoff is in it for you or anyone else may or may not be related to
"the real world" as you see it, but THERE IT IS!

It is NOT a trouble with Usenet: it is a benefit. Where else can you
experience the rough sides of life with no consequences you don't
permit? Really. No insult anyone types here can harm you unless you
let it. They "say" something and you let yourself be angry about it.
Who's responsible for that?

They say something complimentary to you and you feel nice. Who is
responsible for that?

They tell you they think you are a throwback to the stone age and you
just can't understand what they are getting at. Who is responsible for
that?

There is no anonymity here. You are what you type.

There is no "You made me do it" here; you feel what you let yourself
feel, do what you let yourself do.

True, some folks' morals, ethics, manners leave a lot to be desired.
So? You will not change them by giving back in the same (or a more
"physical") vein. They'll only change if they let themselves.

I had a client whose central reason for being was that gOD had taken
him to heaven and placed responsibility for the behavior of mankind in
the palm of his (client's) hand, then returned him to earth without
adding to his repertoire of powers or tools. You can imagine how bad
he felt, every day. He went to bed knowing he'd failed, and got up
knowing it could only be worse.

You may be the right hand of gOD, but don't put yourself in the same
"scenario". There is no useful payoff there.

That case of 'twit' is only one of your posts. how about this, from
October last, to Bret (coincidentally):

">> Better than being an Canon whore equipment junkie who can't take a
>> decent photograph. And I'll post anywhere I want, asshole. You don't
>> make the rules."

So you are in the same category as Kewpie and other snipers.

And how you find my posts is of no interest to me. You don't have to
read them - but clearly they touch a nerve somewhere.

Why not? to me the term 'redneck' means a loud ignorant person of low
enlightenment or education, there are rednecks in every country.
Yankee means American, so - redneck Yankee means loud ignorant American, or
what does redneck mean from the Canadian perspective?

The temptation to say 'Loud ignorant American' is almost overwhelming...
almost..

The origins of the word are believed to have referred to working class
people who had their necks deeply browned by the sun. These mainly rural
types were of limited education and had a very narrow view of the world
and it's peoples, along with a stubborn and steadfast refusal to accept
any new ideas. An inbred Xenophobia, if you will.

Archie Bunker was a redneck.

As an interesting aside, my spell checker tries to correct the name
'Kewfi' to 'viewfinder'..what are the odds?

Indeed. But note what Archie Bunker is: a poor White person in
the South (i.e., south of the Mason-Dixon Line in the US).
Which *is* the definition of "redneck".

It does happen that such people tended to be less educated and
with odd narrow minded views. Hence the connotation indicating
the particular biases of a poor Southerner: the reference is
always to a Southerner as the point of comparison.

Yankee typically means a White person from New England, though
any place not in the South is acceptable too.

Note that typically a person from the Western US would not be
called a "Yankee", except perhaps to exaggerate a comparison
with a New Englander (e.g., to emphasize a non-Southern nature).

It is only slightly negative to refer to a Westerner as a
Yankee, but can be highly offensive to a Southerner. Likewise,
calling anyone outside of the south a "redneck" is doubly
insulting as it includes a depreciation of the regional
difference too.

Of course, all of that is true in the vernacular of American
English. Canadians and Irish don't speak it, and hence have
entirely distinct meanings for such slang because their meanings
are based on total misunderstandings of American slang.

I didn't realise the terms were parochial in nature, distinct to specific
parts of the US. Thanks for the history lesson.
Yankee, for non-Americans simply means any American at all. Redneck simply
means dumbass or racist, and could be used for anyone that fits the
criteria.
