Sorry, but with computer viruses being what they are, I do not open e-mail
attachments from strangers. If you'll re-send this as a straight e-mail
document, I may take a look.

I understand your reluctance to open emails from strangers, but that
wasn't an email. That was an attachment to a news post.

It was a .doc file (MS Word) attachment which could contain several known
viruses. I wouldn't open it either. And yes I have virus protection
installed. Why take the risk??

I totally agree, I don't open attachments from unknowns. And with a name like
"No Ordinary Whore" we're supposed to trust him/her ? !

Wait a sec...you won't download the e-mail attachment from a stranger,
but you *will* accept an e-mail from the same stranger?

That's _strange_!

It does indeed happen to be a MS Word document and it's a survey
with a lot of questions about art and purchases, and I'm not going to
fill it out. Not without some sort of compensation.

Besides, I have a Mac and most viruses don't do a thing with Macs.

I think you are a little confused as to what accepting an email from someone and
opening an attachment from within an email is.

Now that's too funny, I wouldn't kid yourself. You may not find out whether your
system has been infected for weeks. Mac's are infected just the same as any other
system. Unless of course you have a magical Mac :)

I will never ever open any attachment to an email or
newsgroup post. I do believe it is against usenet policy
and the rec.photo charter to attach any binary file anyway.

BTW, what is that rec.photo.advanced newsgroup that this
post is crossposted too? I've never seen that one before,
does it exsist?

This is potentially a good virus carrier, and almost certainly has nothing to
do with photography anyway.

At worst, malicious code. At best, irrelevant spam or inappropriate
advertising.

This e-mail was sent to me in unencoded format. I post it to satisfy the
curious.

Though this poster was apparently well-intentioned, it is still good policy to
NEVER download executable code from an unknown source, either in e-mail or in a
newsgroup posting.

Now, back to the camera stuff......

Ah, but if you have Word, there are some mighty nasty Word macro

YES. There are several MS Word macro viruses that will infect both Macs and
Windows machines. We had one in our office that hit both platforms before we
got it stopped.

Yes, MS-Word .doc file attachments are the least welcomed for correspondents
because they can contain embedded macro programs that can carry viruses.
You could even be sending some without your knowledge. If you must include
layout and font info use .rtf or .wri as the extension. It can be opened
with MS-WordPad or Converted for Mac WPs and will not be able to carry a
macro. Not to mention that a .doc is a waste of bandwidth. It takes
several Kbytes to make a .doc file containing a single character.

That makes no difference. I won't open documents from strangers no matter
how I receive them. A document or executable attached to a newsgroup post
can carry a virus just like an e-mail attachment.

Viruses cannot be transferred just by reading an e-mail message. I know you
have probably received many e-mail warnings saying not to open such and such
and e-mail or it will erase your hard drive - they were hoaxes. Opening an
e-email will not do any harm. Running or opening an attachment is
definitely a bad idea.

Why would I take the chance of receiving a potential problem (virus) just for
the "thrill" of filling out some lengthy questionnaire? Who's getting what out
of this? What's in it for me???
